Christopher","doi":"10.1177/0142064X231166949","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1177/0142064X231166949","url":null,"abstract":"‘The spirit of Jesus’ (τὸ πνεῦμα Ἰησοῦ) is an uncommon phrase found only in Acts 16.7. Most scholars presume it to be a variant description of the Holy Spirit without any special significance. Garnering insight from ethnographic studies on spirit possession, this article seeks to overturn this presumption. In particular, the notion of the traveling spirit suggests that τὸ πνεῦμα Ἰησοῦ deliberately emphasizes the expansion of the ‘presentness’ of Jesus to a new geographical area, namely Macedonia. The significance of the coming into the presence of Jesus in Macedonia is also shown by the account of the divine direction of Paul and his companions to pass by other areas on their way to Macedonia, as well as an allusion to Alexander the Great, the conversion of Lydia, and the clash with another specific spirit that wishes to announce its presence—the python spirit.","PeriodicalId":44754,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the New Testament","volume":"46 1","pages":"3 - 18"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44298182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In attempting to understand these motifs, most scholars engage Old Testament and Second Temple Jewish literature, highlighting several important parallels. Although this approach has undoubtably yielded advances in the study of the Revelation episode, there is still an important but often ignored Second Temple work that allows us to further scrutinize the text: the book of Jubilees. This article demonstrates that Jubilees provides valuable background information for analyzing Rev. 9.1–12, inviting New Testament scholars to give greater attention to Jubilees in order to obtain a clearer picture of the pericope.","PeriodicalId":44754,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the New Testament","volume":"45 1","pages":"451 - 474"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46456904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sanchez","doi":"10.1177/0142064X231163230","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1177/0142064X231163230","url":null,"abstract":"Scholars of pseudepigraphal letters have recognized that pseudepigraphy troubles the identification of the alleged addressee with the historical addressee. This means that the rhetorical addressee is a matter of choice. Building on Benjamin Fiore’s work on exemplarity, I argue that Timothy as addressee of 1 Timothy helps the Pastor articulate specific aspects of his program. Timothy, like Paul, is an example and serves as a link between Paul’s exemplarity and this letter’s readers. Through Timothy’s exemplarity, the Pastor legitimates young leadership, addressing a second-century controversy in the Jesus movement. Finally, the Pastor reframes Timothy’s reputation, distancing him from Jewish law.","PeriodicalId":44754,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the New Testament","volume":"45 1","pages":"351 - 370"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48688865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"The Quotation of Jer. 31.15 in Mt. 2.18 within Christological Patterning of Matthew’s Nativity According to the Joseph Story","authors":"Kai Akagi","doi":"10.1177/0142064X221146442","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1177/0142064X221146442","url":null,"abstract":"The quotation of Jer. 31:15 in Mt. 2:18 has proven to be an interpretive puzzle through its otherwise unattested form of Jer. 31:15 and the seemingly unclear relationship of the quotation to its context in Matthew. Marten J. J. Menken has argued that Matthew quotes a text of Jer. 31:15 that is combined with Gen. 37:35 but that this composite citation does not have interpretive significance for Matthew. When viewed in the context of a series of lexical and thematic parallels between Matthew’s nativity and the Joseph story, it may be understood, however, as a composite citation occurring in the composition of Matthew for christological purposes. These may include presenting Jesus as participating in his people’s history, implicit response to expectations of a Josephite messiah, and portraying Jesus as saving his people by giving them life. Such use in Matthew of the Joseph story through Jeremiah suggests further need for the study of multilayered use of texts in the New Testament and related literature.","PeriodicalId":44754,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the New Testament","volume":"45 1","pages":"405 - 428"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45216496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although some recent scholars have highlighted statements expressing Paul’s esteem for such credentials, the correct interpretation of his devaluation of them in Phil. 3.1–21 is a lingering scholarly problem. I argue that this text evidences adaptation of Stoic patterns of discourse that indicate that Paul’s devaluation does not depict his repudiation of such practices and credentials but his refusal to compare them to ‘knowing Christ’. His use of these patterns of discourse is designed to establish the first-order value of ‘knowing Christ’ and to model for the Philippians the epistemological evaluation he believed was crucial to their eschatological salvation.","PeriodicalId":44754,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of the New Testament","volume":"45 1","pages":"429 - 450"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-02-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48565616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
