This package is addressed to dual methods and is modularized to permit experiments with a particular module (such as a penalty function module) without changing any of the other modules. Thus reliable comparisons can be made without questioning differences in implementations of the remaining portions of a constrained algorithm. The feasibility of modularization as well as advantages and disadvantages for dual algorithms are discussed. Some numerical results are also presented.","PeriodicalId":447373,"journal":{"name":"ACM '75","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131052038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Articles from that issue have become required reading material for introductory computer science courses at many universities. When I was asked to organize a panel session to serve as a sequel to this issue I was therefore understandably excited. As my first task I conducted an informal survey of what people from both academe and industry feel are the pragmatic issues of concern today.\u0000 It is known that a strong correlation exists between the language and the culture a populace develops, and that the thought process of an individual is very much influenced by the language she grows up with. We might correspondingly ask how programming languages affect the thought process involved in solving problems. Proponents of FORTRAN and alike languages claim that no similar conclusions can be drawn for programming languages or at least that the degree of influence is considerably less. Which argument is used as a defense against the accusation that FORTRAN has induced a style detrimental to solving problems.","PeriodicalId":447373,"journal":{"name":"ACM '75","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131124635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some related mathematical problems and some recent applications are also discussed.\u0000 Fortunately, the objectives of the ALTRAN project were few enough and simple enough to permit progress by a small group, yet numerous enough and complex enough to make a great many issues of contemporary computer science and mathematics relevant. While the system more than fulfills our main objective of providing an efficient tool for massive elementary algebra, it also provides context, motivation, and guidance for research on a wide range of fundamental topics. In some cases this work has already had a major impact, while in other cases exciting concepts are just beginning to take shape.","PeriodicalId":447373,"journal":{"name":"ACM '75","volume":"48 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114125989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This session is oriented around new concepts and methodologies related to the management of computer resources in these situations.\u0000 In the 1950's the basis for charging mechanisms for the usage of computer systems was fairly simple and straight-forward due to the serial processing nature of the systems then in use. Since that time, the nature of the problem has complicated significantly due to the evolution of both the multi-programming and multi-processor systems as well as the more prevalent use of sharing computers on computer networks. Today we find ourselves in the environment where resource sharing of computational and communications capabilities is the norm, and with it comes a significant requirement for efficient, logical, and effective charging mechanisms not only to provide a basis for equitably distributing costs but also to provide a basis for a reasonable mechanism for sharing of these resources among the various users.","PeriodicalId":447373,"journal":{"name":"ACM '75","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123680314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper classifies the HLL computer architecture into four types (von Neumann architecture, syntax-oriented architecture, indirect execution architecture, and direct execution architecture) based on the criterion of proximity in lexicality, syntax and semantics between the high-level language and the machine language. The CRYSNET terminal organization CRYSNET终端组织

Bernstein","doi":"10.1145/800181.810288","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1145/800181.810288","url":null,"abstract":"The CRYSNET terminals are intelligent remote graphics terminals forming a network for crystallographic computing. These terminals are assembled from commercially available hardware and use software written largely in FORTRAN. They provide high performance graphics, local computation, remote batch job submission, and remote interactive use of a variety of central sites. Each terminal consists of a DEC PDP 11/40, 28k of 16 bit memory, Vector General 3-D display, single platter removable disc drive, card reader, printer/plotter, magnetic tape drive, 2000 baud synchronous interface to the phone lines. The current price for such a system is now about $100k. The current software supports display of molecular models in several forms, plotting, and crystallographic computations sufficient to have a noticeable impact on the time needed for structure solution and analysis. The terminal provides a collection of useful tools to which its users constantly add new code. The user does not have all the power he would get from a system interfaced to a very large computer, directly, or via high band width lines. The user also does not have the special features to be gained from hardware specifically engineered for the task. For example, black boxes to computer inter-molecular contacts will probably be the best way to do such a job for some time.\u0000 However, it appears that the user has enough power and features for the current application. The equipment is in a reasonable price range and, being off the shelf, is available to a moderately large community with maintenance a controllable if not fully solved, problem. Since the terminal is based on a general purpose mini-computer, the user also has a great deal of flexibility in his use of the terminal. The computer supports a disc operating system with FORTRAN compiler. Thus, many users can write new code for their own applications. This has allowed a great deal of software to be developed at very low visible cost.","PeriodicalId":447373,"journal":{"name":"ACM '75","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124653862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Much has already been written about the topic [1], and various new systematic methods have been proposed. In the analysis of programming, many components are separated and their properties investigated. Certain workers have translated these conceptual resolutions into suggestions; often, it is recommended that one type “programming activity” be isolated, as far as possible, from another type of programming activity.\u0000 One common proposal holds that the design of a program and the act of programming should not be miscegenated. This paper, another polemic foray into the area of programming methodology, questions the separation of program design from other programming activities.","PeriodicalId":447373,"journal":{"name":"ACM '75","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130875044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
