Aim: This study aims to provide valuable insights into the role of Arab universities in promoting sustainability within the context of global higher education. Approach and methods: This study analyzes the performance of 200 universities from 15 Arab countries in the THE IMPACT Rankings. Their performance was compared to 135 universities from three of the leading world-class higher education systems: Canada, UK, and USA. Results: A global demand for sustainable development, Arab universities face challenges in improving their contributions to the SDGs and sustainability rankings. Despite the impressive growth in the participation of Arab universities in THE IMPACT Rankings yet lags in quality and impact of Arab universities contributions towards SDGs. Conclusion: The policy implications underscore the importance of institutional commitment to sustainability in Arab universities, urging the alignment of policies, funding, and curriculum with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Arab universities need to bridge performance gaps, promote green initiatives, and contribute effectively to the achievement of SDGs while recognizing the diverse socio-economic context and priorities of the Arab region.","PeriodicalId":44696,"journal":{"name":"Problemy Ekorozwoju","volume":"39 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139448307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Governments, organizations, and individuals are considering the issues of inclusive economy on a practical level in the form of programs, strategies, or regulatory documents. The study and consideration of socio-economic processes were conducted through the analysis of scientific activity and its results, providing insights into current interests, problems, and needs of society in conditions of sustainable development. The methodological basis of the research includes general philosophical and general scientific methods. The purpose of this study is cognitive modeling of the concept of inclusive economy as a component of sustainable development. The authors argue and justify that inclusive economy is a crucial component of sustainable development. To achieve the goal of the study, the authors identified four key blocks on which the concept of inclusive economy is built in the context of sustainable development: terminological (defining key terms), fundamental (establishing underlying principles), substantive (identifying specific elements), and applied (practical applications). The concept of an inclusive economy is based on the principle of providing all members of society with free and equal access to resources and results of economic activity, which is essential for achieving sustainable development goals. The paper presents data from the index of inclusive development, which assesses the performance of developing countries in achieving inclusive growth and development. The index takes into account environmental and social issues, which underscores the need for developing an inclusive economy as a crucial component of sustainable development. The proposed concept of an inclusive economy as a component of sustainable development will ensure the appropriate level of inclusive economic growth and development by promoting equity, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.","PeriodicalId":44696,"journal":{"name":"Problemy Ekorozwoju","volume":"25 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139444884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the urgency of previous research, the environmental requirements of tourist consumption have not yet been quantified. The main aim of the paper is thus quantify in the long term the total amount of food consumed in international tourism and assess its environmental impacts: land use, water requirements, and emitted emissions. Furthermore, we deal with the projection of these impacts associated with meat consumption up to 2050. The investigation uses long-term secondary data on the number of tourists, national diets, and environmental requirements of foodstuffs. According to our research, 15.6 million tonnes of food was consumed globally in 2010 and this amount increased to 24.5 in 2019. Due to COVID-19, the amount decreased by 72%. Although vegetal foodstuffs account for a larger share of the total, the environmental requirements are primarily associated with animal foodstuffs. Compared to daily at-home eating, tourists’ consumption patterns, e.g., higher preference for meat or whole grains, increase the environmental requirements by more than 10%. This research serves destination management bodies and concludes that the food environmental impacts should be the subject of adequate measures that would mitigate them and would make tourism more sustainable.","PeriodicalId":44696,"journal":{"name":"Problemy Ekorozwoju","volume":"52 15","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139446124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is proved that progress in the field of sustainable development depends on social cohesion as one of the factors ensuring the achievement of environmental, economic and social changes. A mechanism of social cohesion has been developed, the result of which, along with social stability and justice, strengthening citizens' trust in state and public institutions, social welfare, is a request for sustainable development of regions. The article proves that modern challenges, such as social inequality, migration and ethnic differences, can weaken the potential of social cohesion as a catalyst for sustainable development of regions.\u0000To quantify the level of social cohesion, a system of indicators is proposed that integrates economic, demographic, educational and other indicators, and allows for a detailed analysis of the current state of social cohesion in various regions. Taking into account the impact of social cohesion indicators on the progress of sustainable development of regions is realised through the inclusion of indicators that reflect the level of social cohesion potential and, at the same time, are a source of data for assessing the achievement of sustainable development goals.\u0000Using the example of the EU countries, the analysis of indicators related to the blocks of trust in institutions and economic indicators in assessing the level of social cohesion was carried out. The estimated indicators are also taken into account when calculating the achievement of the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS): SDG 1, SDG 8, SDG 10, SDG 16. The proposed approach makes it possible to take into account the indicators that are most vulnerable in terms of their impact on the progress of regions in the field of sustainable development, as well as to form a list of measures, the implementation of which will ensure capacity building of the social cohesion mechanism (hereinafter referred to as SCM).\u0000The main innovative contribution of the study is the development of an economic and mathematical model for optimizing resources and prioritizing measures aimed at strengthening social cohesion. The model takes into account the amount of available resources, the need to use them for the implementation of specific activities and an expert assessment of their priority. This approach provides an objective and systematic solution to the challenges of sustainable development, focusing on social cohesion as a key factor. The study proves that the application of the model requires high-quality data, competence in the process of interpreting modelling results and active interaction with stakeholders. In conclusion, it is emphasized that the integration of social cohesion into strategic planning and the application of the proposed model are the basis for more effective and sustainable development of regional society.","PeriodicalId":44696,"journal":{"name":"Problemy Ekorozwoju","volume":"30 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139447489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Water pollution has a significant impact on residents’ health, and there are many factors that exacerbate water pollution. In this study, we applied the geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model to analyze the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of factors affecting water pollution in China from 2005 to 2021. Hence, this article takes the chemical oxygen demand emissions (CODE) as the dependent variable, and the independent variables are ending permanent population (EPP), urbanization rate (UR), comprehensive production capacity of water supply (CPCOWS), per capita GDP (PCGDP), industrial water consumption proportion (IWCP), and per capita water consumption (PCWC). The conclusions are as follows: (1) The temporal evolution of CODE in different regions is highly consistent, with the order of water pollution severity being central, northeast, eastern, and western. (2) The effects of different factors on water pollution have obvious spatial and temporal heterogeneity. Overall, EPP, UR, CPCOWS, and PCWC have positive effects on water pollution, and PCGDP and IWCP have negative effects. (3) The direction of EPP and PCGDP impacts on CODE remains consistent across regions. UR impacts are primarily in the northeast, CPCOWS impacts are primarily in the eastern, central, and northeast, IWCP impacts are primarily in the central and western, and PCWC impacts are primarily in the eastern and central. Ultimately, some practical and feasible policy recommendations were proposed for different regions.","PeriodicalId":44696,"journal":{"name":"Problemy Ekorozwoju","volume":"26 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139447648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, even the best strategy needs support from society. Drawing upon the data from the International Social Survey Program - Environment 2019-2023, we analysed environmental attitudes among residents of 44 countries. 45.7% of respondents declare their concern about issues related to the natural environment. Over half (55.6%) believe in making personal sacrifices, such as incurring additional costs or spending more time, to benefit the environment. 39.7% declare that they avoid purchasing certain products for environmental reasons (always and often). Approx. 19% of respondents have signed an environmental petition and approx 15% have given money for the environmental purpose in the last 5 years. Most respondents (over 40%,) believe that educating people about the benefits of environmental protection is the most effective way to encourage individuals and families to adopt environmentally responsible behaviours. Fewer respondents (35%) believe that this can be done through the tax system or by imposing fines on those who damage the environment (approx. 23%). Punktem wyjścia jest Agenda 2030, w której sformułowano postulat poprawy jakości kształcenia oraz cele do jego osiągnięcia. Autor skupia się na sojuszu zrównoważonego rozwoju i edukacji, który polega z jednej strony na nauczaniu o zrównoważonym rozwoju więcej niż dotychczas, z drugiej strony na wykorzystaniu edukacji do propagowania idei zrównoważonego rozwoju. Porównanie postulowanego stanu sfery edukacji ze stanem faktycznym prowadzi do wniosku o dużej i narastającej rozbieżności między nimi. Ponadto realizacja tych postulatów napotyka w teraźniejszości coraz większe trudności. In recent types, it has been metaphorically conceptualized as a resource. This conceptualization is problematic such that it reduces the dynamic interdependent nature to a mere store-house for materials. This leads to the conceptualization that humans can use nature up until stock lasts. On top of that, our hunting-gathering instincts have made us reckless consumers and hoarders of things we think are necessary. This non-sustainable behavior is detrimental to our nature which holds us, nurtures us, and provides for us. To change the narrative of nature in the world of sustainability, sustainable development and sustainable practices, we must change our conceptualization of nature. In the present work, we present the problematic conceptualization of nature as a resource. We also discuss certain conceptualizations and their impact in the discussions on sustainability. And finally, we provide a linguistic alternative to the metaphoric conceptualization of nature that has the potential to alter the non-sustainable practices and take society towards sustainability.","PeriodicalId":44696,"journal":{"name":"Problemy Ekorozwoju","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136027147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Towards the sustainability path, a social challenge, entailing international and national law, urban planning and transport, supply chain management local and individual lifestyles, and ethical consumerism is needed. International Standards Organization is working on matching SD Goals with ISO standards. The main goal of conducting this research was to clarify the relations between sustainable development and quality management. This was done by handling a regression analysis between the Sustainable development goals Index and ISO Standards Index to verify Hypothesis H1 (There is not any relation between SDG Index and ISO 9001 Index) against Hypothesis H0 (There is a strong relation between SDG Index and ISO 9001 Index). The results of the research are that scientific management of factors of production creates opportunities for long-term sustainable development, guaranteeing future generations’ normal life and society’s wealth, promoting economic growth, and quality life improvement, without damaging the environment, applying quality management principles and ISO standards, as efficient and effective tools, and this is needed immediately. On the other hand, scientific management of factors of production requires ISO standards application, so, a connection and relations between sustainable development and ISO standards, should exist. The general outcome of the research (also the practical and social outcome, as well as contribution to the field), is that looking forward to achieving and maintaining sustainable development scenarios, for all interested parties, individuals, public and private institutions, decision-makers, and civil society, applying quality management principles and ISO standards, as efficient and effective tools, as an immediate need, all parties should look forward to making sure building relations and connections between SDG and ISO standards, a connection which currently doesn’t exist.","PeriodicalId":44696,"journal":{"name":"Problemy Ekorozwoju","volume":"07 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83496114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Impact of women's role in farming and women education in Africa is significant for the human capital development. Furthermore, women's engagement in agricultural activities has increased with time, leading to improved contributions to food security and livelihood. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of women's participation in agriculture and women education interaction on human capital in Africa with the data obtained from the World Development Indicators (WDI) of the World Bank and Human Development Index (HDI) covering 33 African countries for the time frame 2000 to 2018. To control endogeneity that may be present in fixed effects model, the study applied the Generalised Method of Moments (GMM). The results show that, across African sub-regions, while women's participation in agriculture has a significant negative effect, education has a significant positive impact on human capital outcomes. Additionally, the interaction between women participation in agriculture and education has a significant positive impact on human capital across sub-regions in Africa. The findings underscore the need for policies that promote gender equality, as this has the potential to significantly increase human capital formation and sustainable development. The study, through the the interaction between women's in agriculture and education highlights the contribution of these factors to various goals, such as no poverty (SDG 1), zero hunger (SDG 2), quality education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5) and decent work and economic growth (SDG 8).","PeriodicalId":44696,"journal":{"name":"Problemy Ekorozwoju","volume":"47 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85703305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
