The authors base their analysis on detailed data from static load test with extensometers on CFA piles. The main goal of the research is to determine the proper method of examining how the skin of the pile and soil interacts and apply it to practical engineering practice. As the first stage of the research is limited to the available set of piles, the authors make assumptions that will be verified on later stages of research as more data become available. The authors attempt to formulate the boundary conditions for the formation of pile skin resistance formation using mathematical physics equations to describe the phenomena. Current research proves that it is possible, with the suitable for practical engineering calculations, to describe soil–pile interaction mechanism based on static load test results. Experimental research indicated that there is possibility, for practical engineering calculations purposes, to assume that skin resistance of the pile due to depth can be presented with linear graph. The description is made upon extensometer results, but is meant to be appropriate with the standard static load test results, which provide load–settlement curve of the pile.","PeriodicalId":44626,"journal":{"name":"Studia Geotechnica et Mechanica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42350924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, tyre bales have considerable potential for use in the construction of a lightweight embankment or road foundation over soft ground, slope stabilisation or landslide repairs and the backfilling for retaining structures. Proper design of tyre bale structures requires a reliable strength analysis to ensure an adequate factor of safety. The analysis should utilise the properties of the tyre bales and the baled structures, which must be properly determined. A laboratory test programme was developed to determine the key strength parameters of a backfill made of tyre bales supplemented with a lightweight aggregate. Full-scale direct shear tests were conducted to define the interface shear strength between the tyre bales and the filling material. Earth pressure reduction analysis based on the experimental results was performed as well to assess the effectiveness of waste tyre bales used as a backfill for rigid retaining structures.","PeriodicalId":44626,"journal":{"name":"Studia Geotechnica et Mechanica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46692464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the stability checking methods allowed by EN 1993-1-1 is the so-called general method of assessing structural stability, based on buckling curves and relative structure slenderness λ¯op {bar lambda _{op}} usually determined through numerical analyses. But this method is not widely used because of the limited computing capabilities of the engineering programs dedicated to static load analyses and difficulties in interpreting the results of the computations. The commonly used computer programs enable one to determine the shape of buckling and critical load amplifier αcr, from which one cannot directly determine the risk of buckling of a real structure. This paper presents a modified and innovative approach to the general method of assessing structural stability, which uses only three parameters, that is, the type of cross section, cross-section strength utilisation and αcr, to determine a member’s/structure’s bearing capacity mobilisation from the stability condition. The problem solution is presented in the form of simple formulas and legible diagrams. Finally, synthetic conclusions are formulated.","PeriodicalId":44626,"journal":{"name":"Studia Geotechnica et Mechanica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49494568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has various textures and colours as well as good technical parameters. Sandstones, having such wide applications, are subjected to various external factors during the period of use. So, it is of utmost importance to have a good knowledge of their strength parameters. We employed a numerical method called Discrete Element Method to examine in a non-invasive manner the mechanical strength of industrial sandstones, that are commonly used as broken stones in road construction, cladding material, paving stones, pavement tiles and so on. Various mechanical external factors were considered, such as breaking, compressional and abrasion forces or impact by external objects and vibrations. Fragmentation of the considered sandstones under compressional regime was a source of knowledge about energy storage inside the material and energy release, as well as appearance of fractures inside the matter and final sandstone fragmentation into crumbs.","PeriodicalId":44626,"journal":{"name":"Studia Geotechnica et Mechanica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47010777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The base of any road is its foundation, usually made of crushed or uncrushed aggregate. To be used for road foundation purposes, a material needs to meet many requirements, as imposed by relevant standards. One of the basic tests to assess the suitability of an aggregate is to determine its California bearing ratio (CBR). This paper presents the results of CBR tests for mixed aggregate with the grading of 0–31.5 and 0–63 mm. Detailed assessments were carried out for penetration curves, which in many cases need to be adjusted to meet industry standards. The adjustment of plunger penetration curves in aggregate samples causes CBR to increase compared to the original curves.","PeriodicalId":44626,"journal":{"name":"Studia Geotechnica et Mechanica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45881082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, this method is not commonly applied for ore deposits such as copper deposit. In Poland, the longwall mining method has been tested for thin copper deposits at the Polkowice-Sieroszowice copper mine (KGHM). Various failure modes were observed during longwall operation in the 5A/1 panel. This paper aims to examine these occurred failures. To do so, an analysis has been conducted using 3D numerical modelling to investigate the failure mode and mechanism. Based on the 3D numerical modelling results with extensive in situ measurements, causes of failure are determined and practical recommendations for further copper longwall operations are presented.","PeriodicalId":44626,"journal":{"name":"Studia Geotechnica et Mechanica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46894072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This enables geodetic techniques to be used when monitoring such objects. On this basis, displacements of selected points of the shell are determined, and it is then possible to obtain bending moments, as shown in this paper. Based on measurements using strain gauges in the circumferential band of the shell, internal forces in steel are estimated. The algorithm given in the paper enables the impact of soil on the shell in the examined objects to be analysed. The proposed method of analysing forces in the contact layer becomes especially useful when the static conditions of the model of a shell, which is considered as a bar submerged unilaterally in the soil medium, are met. The paper indicates the possibility of using both measuring techniques. Calculations include a smaller share of axial forces on the contact impact during the laying phase of the backfill. The paper provides examples of the analysis of built shells and record-breaking objects, with an assessment of the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Good mapping of contact forces, which were calculated on the basis of bending moments, was indicated even when there was not a dense grid of measuring points. An important advantage of the algorithm involves reduction of the circumferential band that is separated from the soil-shell system to the bar, which is an element resulting from the division of the structure into subsystems.","PeriodicalId":44626,"journal":{"name":"Studia Geotechnica et Mechanica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46484687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm is developed so as to meet all the requirements given in the Eurocode 7 and, at the same time, to be efficient in terms of necessary calculation time. Furthermore, the presented numerical procedure enables the optimization of design solutions, e.g. the depth and length of the anti-filtration barrier, by means of parametric analyses. The approach assumes the use of numerical methods, in particular, finite element (FE) analysis. Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the terrain topography and subsoil layer arrangement performed in step (1) sets the base for further analyses. In step (2), the filtration phenomena are assessed based on the 3D analysis of a transient groundwater flow. In step (3), the state of displacement is evaluated and the stability is verified for all the relevant phases of construction and operation of the facility, in particular, in the course of simulated flood detention. The analyses in step (3) are carried out on 2D models corresponding to the design cross-sections of the dam. This significantly reduces the computation time (compared to 3D analysis) and, at the same time, provides a safe estimate of factor of safety. The performance of the proposed algorithm is shown on the numerical examples of the computations concerning the dam of Szalejów Górny dry anti-flood reservoir located in Poland.","PeriodicalId":44626,"journal":{"name":"Studia Geotechnica et Mechanica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49234226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particle swarm optimisation (PSO) technique is applied to optimise the solution. Minimum bearing capacity coefficients of shallow foundation near slopes are presented in the form of a design table for practical use in geotechnical engineering. It has been shown that the seismic bearing capacity coefficients reduce considerably with an increase in seismic coefficient. Be sides, the magnitude of bearing capacity coefficients decreases further with an increase in slope inclination.","PeriodicalId":44626,"journal":{"name":"Studia Geotechnica et Mechanica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46618759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis was performed for sands located in Poland, characterised by differential grain size distribution and origin. The significant impact of the independent variables; grain size, preconsolidation stress σ’p, geostatic vertical stress σ’v0 and relative density index on the dependencies analysed, were examined in three stages. Firstly, a general relationship between the cone resistance and shear modulus G0 was established; in the second stage, an analysis was carried out in selected groups of subsoil; and in the third stage, the influence of other independent variables was taken into account. In each stage, the functional form of the dependency was determined, and their statistical significance was assessed throughout coefficient of determination R2. For more variables, multivariable regression analysis was applied for assessment. Conducted analysis showed that the overall view of the relation between the cone resistance qc and shear modulus G0 has low evaluation of the statistical significance. This fact is consistent with the theoretical assessment of this relationship. To obtain a satisfactory assessment of this dependency, it is necessary to construct empirical equations for individual groups of soil, taking into account other independent variables; preconsolidation stress σ’p, vertical stress σ’vo and relative density index. This approach allows to assess the local correlation relationship, which is very useful during the geological project.","PeriodicalId":44626,"journal":{"name":"Studia Geotechnica et Mechanica","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-08-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46310289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
