Research is vital to our field as we strive to verify and validate the varied modalities and techniques that are used by dance/movement therapists in their specific treatment practices. Any form of research typically starts with a question that leads to a systematic inquiry; the need for evidence-based research in DMT is vital for advancing client care and standards of practice in the diverse global environment of our field. This year’s panel with representatives from the Japan, Israel, Canada, and the United States was asked to respond to the following topics of inquiry: How has the international expansion of DMT affected research and practice in your country? How do you envision international collaboration for DMT research? How might this expansion and collaboration meet the need to reshape the field for the diverse demands of 2020 and beyond?</p></div>","PeriodicalId":44552,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN JOURNAL OF DANCE THERAPY","volume":"42 1","pages":"127 - 138"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/s10465-020-09326-7","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50449887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the effectiveness of dance/movement therapy (DMT) for improving the stability, dynamic balance, muscle strength, and internal changes using objective outcome measurements in children with WS. In this pilot study, four participants with WS, aged 5 to 10 years old, completed 10 DMT sessions. Acknowledging individual difference is pervasive. However, rationale for shifting the focus to “shared experience” and its benefits is highlighted in this paper. Dance in Rwanda, and its cultural relevance to resilience and connection before and after the 1994 genocide, illustrates the invaluable healing impact of this relationally based approach. Dance/movement therapy sessions were conducted with adult patients in active treatment for cancer or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in the infusion room of an outpatient cancer center. The sessions were offered in individual format rather than in group format, which led to the development of a model for individual DMT in the infusion room. The model consists of six components that guide patients to develop the attitudes and skills to cope with their disease while in active treatment. Patients start with mindfulness exercises and a therapist guided movement warm-up, and progress to mindful moving. Patients eventually direct their own movements and use symbolic and expressive movements to access and express thoughts and feelings that are held in the body or in the unconscious, before ending with reflections and verbal discussions. A limitation of the model is that it is based on conducting DMT with a small number of patients at one medical facility and may not be viable in a more culturally diverse population.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":44552,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN JOURNAL OF DANCE THERAPY","volume":"42 1","pages":"61 - 89"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2020-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1007/s10465-020-09323-w","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50498042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
