Material and Method: In this retrospective study, the histopathological reports of patients who underwent biopsy between February 2013 and May 2018 were examined and analyzed. Gender, age, location of the lesion, clinical and final histopathological diagnoses were determined from patient records. The lesions were divided into three main categories according to their final histopathological diagnosis: Group 1 (Developmental, inflammatory, reactive lesions of the jaws), Group 2 (Cystic lesions), and Group 3 (Tumors and tumor-like lesions). Results: The records of 506 patients were examined in the study. Patients’ ages ranged from 8 to 80 years (mean: 37.1 ± 17.5). The distribution of lesions by groups was as follows: Group 1: 105 (20.8%), Group 2: 333 (65.8%), and Group 3: 68 (13.4%).Two hundred and seventy-five of the patients were male (54.3%) and 231 of them were female (45.7%). Two hundred and fifteen of the lesions were localized in the maxilla (42.5%) and 291 of them were localized in the mandible (57.5%). The concordance rate of diagnoses was 87.4% as a result of the comparison of clinical and final histopathological diagnoses. Discussion: The clinician’s knowledge about the lesion has a significant effect on the concordance between clinical and histopathological diagnoses. The correct and early diagnosis of lesions will prevent unnecessary treatments and delayed surgical operations.","PeriodicalId":44485,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Clinical and Analytical Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47053703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

GSM: +905053882174 E-Mail: aoerdem@adu.edu.tr ORCID ID: 0000-0002-9584-4200 Abstract Aim: Numerous methods have been tried to reduce the anal sphincter spasm occurring in cases with anal fissure. One of these methods is chemical sphincterotomy performed with various drugs. We aimed to show and compare the “in vitro” effects of glyceryl trinitrate and nifedipine, which are among these drugs, in the organ bath, using the rat anal sphincter muscle. Material and Method: We used 18 Wistar-Albino rats in our experimental study. We used isolated experimental tissue chamber protocol. The sphincteric muscle tissue was placed in the tissue chamber containing Krebs solution, and the degree of contraction was measured as “mg”. We evaluated the effects of drugs in both the baseline and the precontracted states. Results: Tissue relaxation response against nifedipine and glycerol trinitrate in both the baseline and the precontracted states were statistically significant. The relaxation response against nifedipine was higher than the one against glycerol trinitrate; however, it was not statistically significant. Discussion: We showed that both nifedipine and GTN were effective ” in vitro” on muscle tissue relaxation in the organ bath. Both nifedipine and GTN were found to lead to significant reduction of tension at both the baseline and the precontracted states. Their effects were more significant in the precontracted muscle tissue than the tissue with baseline tension. Although clinical studies have revealed controversial results, since we have proven their efficacies “in vitro”, we have the opinion that these two drugs may find more place for themselves in clinical use particularly with the purpose of chemical sphincterotomy, in other words, the relief of sphincter spasm, paying attention to their side effects.","PeriodicalId":44485,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Clinical and Analytical Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41247124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

GSM: +905054834377 E-Mail: eda_coban@yahoo.com ORCID ID: 0000 0001 5894 7318 Abstract Aim: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), or pseudotumor cerebri is a challenging condition with raised intracranial pressure (ICP) in the absence of identifiable cause. Typical clinical manifestations can be a headache, tinnitus, papilledema, and decreased vision. The diagnosis is established by the Modified Dandy Criteria. Several brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) findings have been associated with the diagnosis of IIH. The aim of this study is to determine the characteristics of IIH and establish whether there are characteristic appearances on MRI and MRV that are being routinely overlooked in our clinical practice. Material and Method: All patients with a diagnosis of IIH between January 2010 and January 2018 at Bakırköy Mental Health Education and Training Hospital of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry were enrolled. The diagnosis of IIH was established according to the Modified Dandy Criteria (Table 1). Only patients who had available images of MRV examination and/or MR imaging examination during the period of review were included. Electronic medical records were reviewed for clinical parameters such as symptom profile, age, gender, opening pressure at lumbar puncture and neuroimaging. Each case was reviewed independently by a neuroradiologist and a neurologist. Results: One hundred thirty-nine patients were included in the study. The patient group consisted of 114 females and 25 males, ages 17-72 years (38.13 ± 11.51). The most common symptom was a headache, which was noted in 84 %. Papilledema was found in 118 patients (86.33 %). In the neurological examination,7 patients had abducens nerve palsy (Table 2). Opening pressure on lumbar puncture was available in the hospital chart for 130 of the 139 IIH patients (93.5 %). Opening pressure ranged from 160 to 800 mm H2O (mean: 365 mm H2O; 1 standard deviation=130 mm H2O). One hundred twenty-two of 139 patients had abnormal opening pressure. Eight of the 139 patients hadnormal opening pressure (<250 mm H2O). The MRI was normal in 66 patients ( 47.5 %). The MRI disclosed flattening of the posterior eyeballs and vertical tortuosity of the orbital optic nerve in 6.5 %, optic nerve hyperintensity in 2.2 %, empty cella in 24.5 %, Chiari malformation in 4.3 %, and optic nerve hyperintensity together with empty cella in 9.4 % of patients (Table 3). There was no evidence of sinus thrombosis on the static images of the patients. Unilateral transverse sinus hypoplasia was perceived in 19.4 % of patients. Bilateral TS stenosis was perceived categorically in 20.9 % of patients with IIH. The aim of our study is to investigate the effects of epidural analgesia on mother, fetus, and labor. Material and Method: Files of pregnancies underwent epidural labor analgesia were reviewed retrospectively. Demographic data, hemodynamic parameters, Activity, Pulse, Grimace, Appearance, Respiration scores (APGAR scores), durations of first and second stages of labor, side effects, drug doses and amounts, VAS and VRS scores, maternal satisfaction ratings were examined. Results: In the primiparous group there is a moderate positive correlation between the total dose and Verbal Rating Scale 2 (VRS 2) and Visual Analog Scale 2 (VAS 2), (p-values are p<0.001, p<0.001 respectively). In the multiparous group, there is a strong positive correlation between VRS 2 and VAS 2 (p-values are p<0.001, p<0.001 respectively). There is also a moderate positive correlation between the total dose and VRS 2 and VAS 2 when all pregnant women are examined (p-values are p<0.001, p<0.001 respectively). It was observed that epidural analgesia had no effect on the 1st and 5th minute APGAR scores. There was a significant moderate positive correlation between total dose and duration of labor (p<0.001). Discussion: The use of epidural analgesia, during labor that generates intensive maternal pain and stress, when done by specialists, allows a highly satisfactory and comfortable labor by reducing pain of the mother.","PeriodicalId":44485,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Clinical and Analytical Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45548641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Almost all metabolic processes are dependent on or performed by electrolytes. Electrolyte abnormalities may represent significant risks for life. Routinely, all electrolytes are measured from the serum sample, using the automatic analysis devices at the central laboratories of the hospitals. However, this is time-consuming. In this study, our aim is to compare the results of venous blood gas electrolyte, glucose and hemoglobin values with serum laboratory results and to investigate whether venous blood gas can substitute serum. Material and Method: Our study was designed as a prospective cohort study. A total of 418 adult patients between 18-88 years old, who were admitted to the nephrology outpatient clinic were included in the study. The demographic data of the patients and accompanying comorbidities were recorded. In addition, blood gas electrolytes, glucose, and hemoglobin values of each patient were recorded. Results: The study included 174 female patients and 244 male patients. In terms of both serum and blood gas hemoglobin, there was a statistically significant difference between the genders (p<0.001). A strong positive correlation was detected between serum sodium, potassium, glucose and hemoglobin values and blood gas sodium, potassium, glucose and hemoglobin values (p <0.001, r = 0.764, p <0.001, r = 0.867, p <0.001, respectively, r = 0.969; p <0.001, r = 0.846). The highest correlation coefficient was between serum and blood gas glucose values, while the lowest correlation coefficient was between the sodium values. Discussion: In our study, we believe that in CKD patients with a prominent fluid-electrolyte imbalance, in emergency departments, where critically ill patients are common in intensive care patients with a life-threatening disease, the rapid blood gas tests may be considered for the treatment planning until the results of the biochemical examination are available.","PeriodicalId":44485,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Clinical and Analytical Medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47101158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
