Today, the concept of health literacy is used to determine the health needs of the population in parallel with ever-increasing health knowledge. Objectives. The aim of the study is to evaluate the health literacy level of patients who apply to the Family Medicine preventive health services of Düzce University Hospital and to investigate the relevant factors that may be related to health literacy. Material and methods. This study was a cross-sectional study carried out between October 2018 and April 2019. The patients were evaluated utilizing the “Health Literacy Survey-European Union (HLS-EU)” scale. The study took place in Düzce Medical Faculty Hospital, Turkey. Results. A total of 816 patients, 48.5% (n = 396) of them male and 51.4% (n = 420) female, were included in the study. The general health literacy levels of the patients were as follows: 30.6% (n = 250) insufficient, 33.4% (n = 272) limited, 28.9% (n = 236) sufficient, 7.1% (n = 58) excellent. According to all subdimensions and matrix averages of the scale used in the study, the mean score that patients received in understanding and applying health information in the disease prevention dimension (8.45 ± 2.30, 8.10 ± 2.38, respectively) was found to be lower than health care (11.20 ± 2.72, 11.63 ± 3.01, respectively). Conclusions. The study results revealed a lower level of health literacy in terms of disease prevention rather than healthcare utilization. Initiatives to increase people’s knowledge of disease prevention should be planned.","PeriodicalId":44481,"journal":{"name":"Family Medicine and Primary Care Review","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71080748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives. This study was aimed at determining the role of diabetes self-care education (DSME) and practice in the management of T2DM patients. Material and methods. A hospital-based study was conducted on 120 adults with T2DM who had been presenting at the clinic for at least two months. The study participants were divided into two groups. Group 1 was the test group and had DSME, while group 2 served as the control. Data was collected using a questionnaire, and clinical parameters of glycemic control were measured both pre-and post-intervention period. Results. A significant relationship was found between diabetes education, diabetes self-care and glycemic control. This was demon strated by the significant difference in the proportion of those who achieved good FPG from 28.3% pre-intervention to 51.7% post--intervention ( p = 0.001); 2HPP from 30% to 46.7% ( p = 0.060) and HbA 1c from 53.3% to 85% ( p < 0.001) in the test group; while that of the control was FPG 18.3% to 30% ( p = 1.355), 2HPP 11.7% to 26.7% ( p = 0.369) and HbA 1c 43.3% to 53.3% ( p = 0.804). This showed a significant improvement in the glycemic control of the test group compared to the control group. Conclusions. We conclude that good knowledge and practice of diabetes self-care is relevant to the achievement of good glycemic control.","PeriodicalId":44481,"journal":{"name":"Family Medicine and Primary Care Review","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71082940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the chronic microvascular complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Microalbuminuria is a marker that can be used in detecting these complications so that preventive measures can be taken. Objectives. This study aimed to detect DN as T2DM complications by measurement of the urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) as a marker and to analyze the factors that may influence the ratio in T2DM patients. Material and methods. The study design was a correlative study with a cross-sectional approach. The study population was all T2DM patients who regularly visit the diabetic clinic and primary health care in Medan. The sample size consisted of 89 subjects, while the subjects were recruited by consecutive sampling. Data was processed using SPSS and was analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA. Results. The study results showed that most T2DM patients had normal to mildly increased ACR levels in 49 subjects (55.1%). There was a relationship between increased ACR levels with blood glucose level (BGL) ( p = 0.01), HbA 1c ( p = 0.03), HDL-C ( p = 0.01) and triglyceride ( p = 0.04). In contrast, increased ACR levels had no relationship with age ( p = 0.27), duration of illness ( p = 0.13), systolic blood pressure ( p = 0.31), total cholesterol ( p = 0.90) and LDL-C ( p = 0.89), respectively. Conclusions. The study showed that BGL, HbA 1c , HDL-C and triglyceride had a strong relationship with the increased ACR level, which is believed to be a DN marker. ACR can be a screening tool for DN in T2DM patients and other T2DM complications, such as cardiovascular complications and retinopathy.","PeriodicalId":44481,"journal":{"name":"Family Medicine and Primary Care Review","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71080513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives. To present some destructive (cryodestruction, CO2 laser vaporisation, radiofrequency ablation) and excisional (LLETZ/ /SWETZ) treatment techniques for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), their selection criteria and application in outpatient practice. Material and methods. This is a retrospective study over a period of one year, which included 101 patients with histologically verified CIN. The diagnosis was made after targeted biopsy under colposcopic control or through a see-and-treat strategy. The following methods were applied: video colposcopy, co2 laser vaporisation using video colposcopy, cryodestruction, LLETZ (SWETZ) under video colposcopic control. Results. Destruction treatment was administered to 46 patients (45.5%). Excision therapy was performed on 55 patients (54.5%). CO2 laser vaporisation was performed on 20 (43.5%) of the patients with destructive treatment, cryodestruction – on 20 (43.5%), and radiofrequency ablation – on 6 (13%) patients. All patients on excision therapy underwent the LLETZ procedure. After a median follow-up of 2.5 years, no high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HGSIL) recurrence was observed. Conclusions. The characteristics of the altered area, the squamous-cylindrical epithelium border and degree of CIN’s are decisive for the choice of treatment method – destruction or excision. The role of colposcopy, in this respect, is essential. CINs are successfully treated in an outpatient setting by destructive (CO2 laser vaporisation, cryodestruction) and excisional methods (LLETZ, SWETZ).","PeriodicalId":44481,"journal":{"name":"Family Medicine and Primary Care Review","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71081591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Human milk is rich in both nutrient and non-nutrient content which leads to many benefits for the growth and development of children’s and mothers’ bodies. lactoferrin is one of the main proteins contained in human milk, and the factors that affect its concentration are important to comprehend. Objectives. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between hemoglobin and serum transferrin receptor with lactoferrin concen tration in human milk. Material and methods. This cross-sectional study was conducted from September to November 2017. The subjects were 79 pregnant mothers in three working areas of the primary health centers in semarang City, indonesia. hemoglobin and serum transferrin receptor data was obtained from blood during the third trimester of pregnancy, while lactoferrin concentration was measured in milk after de -livery. Hemoglobin concentration was measured using cyanmethemoglobin, serum transferrin receptor concentration using enzyme--linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and lactoferrin concentration using a human lactoferrin ELISA. Data analysis was performed with Spearman's rank correlation coefficient using SPSS version 23. Results. There was no correlation between maternal hemoglobin and lactoferrin concentration ( p = 0.636). There was also no correla tion between serum transferrin receptor and lactoferrin concentration ( p = 0.688). Hemoglobin and serum transferrin receptors did not affect the concentration of lactoferrin in breastfeeding mothers. Conclusions. The mechanism of lactoferrin homeostasis in human milk is still not completely understood.
