The first was to assess the digital resources for a department too understaffed to address digital preservation and to provide a step-by-step program for them to start thinking in the long-term. The second was to show how these steps can be generalized for many institutions just starting to have digital holdings and looking to create a long-term digital preservation plan. Design/methodology/approach – The main method for research involved taking a significant sampling of the department’s digital holdings and conducting an inventory of them, analyzing such characteristics as file size, names, formats and metadata. After the inventory was conducted, recommendations were made to the department based on best practices in the field of digital preservation. Findings – We found that while the department generally does not follow industry-best practices for preserva...","PeriodicalId":444419,"journal":{"name":"OCLC Syst. With the increase in collaborative initiatives among diverse scientific discipline, infrastructure should be in place to facilitate effective information sharing. Scientific data sharing involves provisioning, curation and dissemination of information about the various datasets for discovery and access by other peers, which is achieved using metadata services. The heterogeneous nature of various distributed dataset repositories has resulted in the use of heterogeneous metadata services. This poses some challenges in efficient dataset sharing and information retrieval. To allow for universal accessibility of these autonomous curated data repositories, it is important to establish cross-integration on these data repositories for information sharing. Design/methodology/approach – The authors address this problem through provisioning of a universal metadata interface design that c...","PeriodicalId":444419,"journal":{"name":"OCLC Syst. Findings – While communication failures in projects are caused by many factors, the project team ultimately bears the burden for ensuring successful communication within a project. There are several common causes of communication failures. Thankfully, there are also some simple things that project teams can do to lessen the likelihood of miscommunication. Many organizations still do not have an on-going, sustainable usability assessment program in place. This should be a cause for concern because usability programs serve as a quality-control check on our ability to provide quality information. This is why evidence-based information practice is so important as a fundamental building block of a usability assessment plan. This paper aims to address these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Through a review of the basic principles of evidence-based practice, the author puts into context how a web assessment methodology could be put in place at a library or information organization.
