Important elements in Reflecting Dialogues are attentively listening and reflecting on what is being said, in order to open up for new meaning and understanding. In this study, prisoners, released prisoners, and prison staff are interviewed about their experiences with Reflecting Dialogues. Applying Reflecting Dialogues in prisons seems to cover a need that many prisoners have; to be able to talk freely about their feelings and thoughts, which build up easily during imprisonment. We find that Reflecting Dialogues can contribute to reducing the level of conflict, and subsequently create a better prison environment. The prisoners express that they are more at ease, more in contact with their own needs, and find it easier to communicate with other people.","PeriodicalId":44427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Family Psychotherapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2017-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/08975353.2017.1301157","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44387772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There were 14 hotline volunteers recruited from Taipei Lifeline, they received 24 hours of solution-focused brief counseling training over 3 days. All participants were required to fill in an open-ended course feedback form after the solution-focused brief counseling training program and 1 month later. We used open coding to analyze the verbal data from the course-feedback forms. There were 6 features contributing to the effect of this solution-focused brief counseling training program that were found: helpful solution-focused brief counseling skills, the usefulness of solution-focused brief counseling’s stages, the establishment of basic knowledge of solution-focused brief counseling, enhancing the confidence and stability of telephone-counseling volunteers, the positive influence on volunteers’ personal life, and effective ways to learn and master solution-focused brief counseling. Using the research results, this study discusses solution-focused brief counseling training as it relates to telephone-counseling volunteers and suggests further research directions in relevant fields.","PeriodicalId":44427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Family Psychotherapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2017-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/08975353.2017.1297066","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43282898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the widespread use of reframing, we are not aware of explicit and comprehensive guidelines for constructing reframes. This lack of clarity about how to develop reframes may lead clinicians to do so haphazardly. Further, those who train marriage and family therapists may struggle to effectively teach students to develop reframes. In this article, we present three principles that guide the development of effective reframes. We offer these principles as one way to teach students to construct reframes and have developed case vignettes to demonstrate the application of these three principles.","PeriodicalId":44427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Family Psychotherapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2017-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/08975353.2017.1297068","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42628071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sense of coherence has been proposed as a meta-model for salutogenic family therapy. This study aims to explore the development of sense of coherence among systemic family therapist trainees in Germany over a 3-year period. The sample consisted of 66 trainees (1st year) with 55 and 43 respondents in the 2nd and 3rd years, respectively. Biographical and sense of coherence data were analyzed. Findings indicate an increase in total sense of coherence, particularly for meaningfulness. Certain subgroups developed sense of coherence and subscales more so than others. Conclusions are provided and recommendations for family theory and practice given.","PeriodicalId":44427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Family Psychotherapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2017-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/08975353.2017.1294966","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48291231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder were interviewed in focus groups concerning how their illness influences relationship with their partner. The interviews were analyzed phenomenological. The results show that obsessive-compulsive disorder can cause mental and physical distance, the patient can feel monitored and pathologized by the partner’s accommodation and support, and the patient can monitor that the partner follows the rituals. The disturbed power balance can last even in periods with low symptom level. Power-related aspects should be emphasized in couple therapy for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.","PeriodicalId":44427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Family Psychotherapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/08975353.2017.1291239","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46983601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Qualitative interviews were conducted and participant narratives were filled with references of: “shock and fear,” “not-knowing,” being negatively impacted by professionals, and encouragement they received from others. The final model included: initial reactions, barriers and buffers, and acquiring a new perspective. Mothers emphasized the benefits of raising a child with an extra chromosome and ultimately experiencing personal “growth” on this parenting journey. Implications for providers who interface with families living with children of Down syndrome were presented.","PeriodicalId":44427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Family Psychotherapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/08975353.2017.1291238","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43568223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The addiction is perceived to be ingrained as a life-long disease, but unlike cancer, the blame is often put on the person for having it. By externalizing a problem we create space for the person to freely address their problems without using up emotional resources to carry the weight of being the problem. This article provides a description of how externalizing problems using art along with the narrative practice of mapping the influence can be beneficial for building one’s personal resources and confidence in navigating the problem of substance dependence. Detail is given to the set-up of the intervention, process of externalizing problems, facilitating a conversation to map the influence of the problem, and addressing client responses. This intervention is applied to a group therapy setting and considerations are given to scenarios of resistance or hesitancy from clients.","PeriodicalId":44427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Family Psychotherapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2017-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/08975353.2017.1288995","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45153140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of the systemic approach as the foundation for the treatment plan was shown to be effective, as demonstrated by the client’s reduction in hostility and improved overall well-being. The outcomes revealed this approach to be effective in improving the individual client’s functioning, without working directly with the entire relational system.","PeriodicalId":44427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Family Psychotherapy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2017-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/08975353.2017.1288989","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48431530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
