Traditionally, anthropometric data were summarized in statistical tables (means, percentiles, etc.,) that were then applied in the design process of products and environments. The emergence of 3D body scanners ushered in a new age for anthropometric research by providing, in addition to digital body measurements, a 3D representation of the body. Nowadays, the latest 4D scanning technology is able to capture the 3D body in motion. The complexity of these captures entails new challenges related to the processing, analysis, and synthesis of body data used to support ergonomics in design.","PeriodicalId":44407,"journal":{"name":"Ergonomics in Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41785644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This discussion will cover a range of differently sized topics to fit your interests. De Bruin and Castelluci discuss the problems of designing school furniture that fits students, noting that “Regarding School furniture dimensions, students are usually exposed to furniture with fixed dimensions, which makes it almost impossible to adjust to the ‘growing’ anthropometrics along their school life and neither does it accommodate multidimensional fit very well.” Griffin et al. discuss developing an “understanding [of] body dimensions in relation to how a body functions, moves, and changes” that “is fundamental to creating compatible wearable products” for aging women. Alemany et al. discuss 4D scanning, observing that “This technology is able to capture the human body surface in motion at high frequency with a high resolution” and offers “an enormous potential to advance in ergonomic design and biomechanics.” Bradtmiller describes the “nearly infinite combination of head/facial characteristics” and that “This combination of traits allows us to recognize unique individuals but increases the challenge of designing head and face products that fit a wide variety of individuals with a relatively small number of sizes.”","PeriodicalId":44407,"journal":{"name":"Ergonomics in Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2023-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43740496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An integrated approach was taken to select the appropriate 3D scanning technology, develop a landmarking method, and position the body to analyze the waist–hip–thigh region. Each part of the method was developed to enable an in-depth analysis of circumference measurements and shape change, including the expansion and contraction of body shape across different postures. New 3D scanning methods to quantify diverse bodies can improve product fit and create inclusive, quality design for all.","PeriodicalId":44407,"journal":{"name":"Ergonomics in Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47348410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering this, it is fundamental that school furniture fulfills two fundamental variables: furniture Form and Dimensions. However, there are some issues that need to be addressed to implement the knowledge of anthropometry, ergonomics, and design related to school furniture. The intervention must have a systemsoriented perspective, following the principles of systems ergonomics or macro-ergonomics. Also, it is important to involve the different stakeholders and give a clear message related to the impact in productivity and well-being. Finally new standards need to considered dynamic sitting.","PeriodicalId":44407,"journal":{"name":"Ergonomics in Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47508728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, their acceptability must be evaluated. We conducted user tests with agricultural advisors to assess perceived comfort and user experience. The participants reported comfort issues like and harm problems, and obstruction or disturbance of the visual field. Objective and subjective evaluations were poorer when the device was used in voice mode compared with buttons. Despite these limitations, the participants mentioned the potential benefits of the device for plot diagnosis. Although promising, smart glasses do not yet meet the advisors’ constraints. We propose hardware and software recommendations.","PeriodicalId":44407,"journal":{"name":"Ergonomics in Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2021-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/10648046211018541","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43933899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thirteen anthropometric body dimensions of 8,025 Indian male agricultural workers were considered for developing reach envelopes for hand- and foot-operated controls. The optimum reach for hand controls is in the range of 456 to 700 mm forward and 265 to 492 mm above the seat reference point. Similarly, for foot-operated control, the foot could reach within the range 429 to 897 mm forward and 367 mm below, and 30 mm above the seat reference point.","PeriodicalId":44407,"journal":{"name":"Ergonomics in Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2021-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/10648046211009943","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43658501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
