The collapse-induced height loss in vertebrae can result in spinal instability and progressive kyphotic deformity. Surgical intervention for osteoporotic vertebrae poses challenges due to poor bone quality and frequent medical comorbidities. In recent years, it has become the predominant method for vertebral augmentation in acute fractures, aiming to relieve pain, strengthen the vertebral structure, and prevent deformities by restoring height. These procedures involve percutaneous placement of cannulas into each collapsed vertebral body through a unipedicular or bipedicular approach. Novel products are emerging to strengthen vertebrae in treating osteoporotic compression fractures. Balloon kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are widely accepted and recognized as effective vertebral augmentation methods. Treatment guidelines are evolving with the introduction of innovative systems like Vertebral Body Stenting, Titanium Mesh, and Sky Bone Expander, claiming to achieve exceptional vertebral height restoration. Controversies persist regarding the optimal timing for vertebral augmentation post-fracture. Polymethylmethacrylate cement is extensively used to stabilize fractured vertebral bodies. Additionally, new calcium phosphate-based nanocomposite cements are gaining prominence. These advancements underscore the ongoing development in the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Each innovative implant introduces unique features and indications. Precise confirmation of the source of the painful fracture is crucial for effective and safe treatment, ensuring proper timing and indication.","PeriodicalId":443822,"journal":{"name":"Sabuncuoglu Serefeddin Health Sciences","volume":"19 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139145973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explores burn incidents in children aged 0-6 years admitted to the Burn Unit of a tertiary hospital between January 1, 2016, and June 20, 2023, within the context of the existing literature. Additionally, it conducts an analysis of burn etiology, distribution, severity, and treatment interventions, categorizing a sample of 241 pediatric burn patients, predominantly within the 0-18 month age range. Children are categorized into three groups based on Sigmund Freud's \"psychosexual development stages\": 0-18 months, 18-36 months, and 36-72 months. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 25, with a predetermined significance level of 0.05. Burns commonly present as scalds, flames, and chemical burns, primarily falling within the 11-20% range and predominantly involving second-degree burns. Treatment approaches include a combination of dressing and medical treatment in 68% of cases, debridement under general anesthesia in 16.2%, and grafting in 15.8%. The infection rate is 10.8%, with Pseudomonas Aeruginosa emerging as the predominant pathogen, and the mortality rate reported at 0.8%. The average hospitalization duration is 9 days. Highlighting the paramount importance of meticulous planning in managing burns in children under 6 years old and emphasizing the influence of parental factors, the study advocates for educating parents on safety measures as a crucial step in mitigating burn incidence. Stressing the pivotal role of epidemiological investigations in comprehending and preventing the root causes of burns, the research suggests that more extensive age-range studies and multicenter approaches could provide more robust epidemiological insights for the effective management of burn cases.","PeriodicalId":443822,"journal":{"name":"Sabuncuoglu Serefeddin Health Sciences","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139159552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Food allergies are becoming increasingly common and better recognized. \"Elimination diets\" are a dietary approach based on the elimination of certain allergenic foods or, in cases where it is not known which foods are allergenic, the elimination of potentially allergenic foods from the diet. Maintaining elimination diets can be highly effective in reducing the symptoms of food allergies. The gut microbiota has important effects on the structure and function of the enteric and central nervous system, including human behavior and brain regulation. The gut-microbiome-brain axis is now recognized as an important part in the regulation of systemic metabolism and homeostasis. Nutrients can cause inflammation by affecting the neural pathways through the vasoconstrictor or vasodilator effects of some of the substances they contain. Therefore, maintaining the gut microbiota and prioritizing anti-inflammatory nutrients and eliminating certain nutrients that are predicted to cause damage to the body are important in the nutritional treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Elimination diets, which are mainly used for food allergies, have been suggested to be effective in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. For this reason, it has become the focus of more intensive research in neurological and psychiatric pathologies, especially as it may alleviate emotional eating disorders such as anxiety and depression. The evidence in this review summarizes balanced and high-quality elimination diets as a promising medical nutrition therapy to support immune and neuronal homeostasis.","PeriodicalId":443822,"journal":{"name":"Sabuncuoglu Serefeddin Health Sciences","volume":"70 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139172303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the etiopathogenesis of AA has not been clarified yet; In addition to attitude, psychological factors and persistence factors, autoimmune and inflammatory cells have a polygenic character in which genes are effective. Immunological hair follicle dysfunction process in AA are controlled by activated T cells. It is thought that cytokines released in T cells may cause hair loss in AA. Studies have reported that various genes of the immune system, such as interleukin and cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA4), are effective in the development of the cell membrane, and dysfunction of the CTLA-4 antigen may be associated with various diseases. The CTLA-4 gene polymorphism is thought to be associated with impaired control of T cell proliferation, and this gene is thought to be a candidate gene for susceptibility to autoimmunity. This study was conducted to investigate whether CTLA4 CT60 A/G and +49AG polymorphisms have a role in susceptibility to Alopecia Areata. 195 patients and 173 healthy volunteer controls were included in the study, and genotype and allele frequencies were determined by PCR-RFLP method. The obtained data were analyzed with OpenEpi. Our results showed that the +49AG polymorphism was not associated with AA susceptibility in the Turkish population, but the CT60 polymorphism might be associated with AA susceptibility. For this reason, it was aimed to determine the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity of H. plicatum extract in this study. Firstly, H. plicatum was extracted with methanol for 6 hours using a Soxhlet. Secondly, the antimicrobial activity of the extract was tested against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC®25923, Bacillus cereus ATCC®7064, Bacillus subtilis ATCC®6633) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC®25922, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC®706003, Salmonella Enteritidis ATCC®13076) bacteria and a yeast (Candida albicans ATCC®10231) using well diffusion and microdilution methods. Finally, the cytotoxic activity of H. plicatum extract on DLD-1 (human colon adenocarcinoma) and CCD-18Co (normal colon) cell lines was determined by MTT method. According to the results of the antimicrobial effect, H. plicatum extract was found to have a stronger antibacterial activity against Salmonella Enteritidis (24.13±1.15 and 156µg/mL) among Gram-negative bacteria. It was determined to have inhibitory activity against also Bacillus cereus (16.66±1.52 and 312µg/mL) among Gram-positive bacteria. In addition, the extract showed a strong antifungal effect on Candida albicans (22.66±0.57 and 312µg/mL). In addition, the H. plicatum extract did not show any cytotoxic effect on CCD-18Co cells, while the IC50 value on the DLD-1 cell line was determined as 8.17mg/mL. This indicates that the plant extract has a selective toxic effect on cancer cells.
