Winnicott’s Debt to and Divergence from Melanie Klein: A Psychoanalytic Genealogy","authors":"Peter Lawner","doi":"10.1353/aim.2023.a901544","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/aim.2023.a901544","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:This is a two-part paper. Its first part examines Winnicott’s early phase work vis-à-vis that of his mentor, Melanie Klein, by whom he was significantly influenced. It focuses on two of his pivotal papers, one from 1941, when he was at the end of a period of intensive tutelage with her, the other in 1945, when he announced new conceptions that constituted decisive breaks from several of her core understandings and inaugurated his mature theory development. His 1945 contribution nevertheless implied continued endorsement of her important concept of the depressive position, which he continued to affirm throughout his career.Its second part assays the development of his conceptions relative to hers, particularly after 1945, regarding areas such as infantile development, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapeutics. It then explores his alignments with and departures from her depressive position views. Finally, it examines his revision of her depressive position formulations. It does this particularly in relation to his proposition that infants dissociate from one another their experience of themselves and of their mother conditioned either by having interacted with her in ruthlessly intense states directed to her or when having been tenderly nurtured by her.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48051886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To support this hypothesis, evidence is adduced to support the contention that Bion was covertly inspired by Jungian ideas, which he utilized as a catalyst for developing his own theoretical and clinical innovations. In this context Jung is identified as a contemporary avatar of esoteric ideas and practices transposed into a psychoanalytic register. It is further proposed that certain elements in Bion’s later writings effectively constitute a defacto ‘esoteric matrix’ developed out of a bricolage of mystical and esoteric texts, which he utilized as tools to augment and enhance his own lines of thinking. By way of conclusion, some tentative comparisons are made between elements of Late Antique theurgy and their corresponding analogues encountered within late Bionian psychoanalysis.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46771471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The prism of autism explains the intricacies of this extraordinary character, providing a coherent framework for understanding her and the characteristics of the narrative itself, as it is narrated by the protagonist. At the same time, the novel provides us with an extraordinary inner portrait of an autistic psyche that may enrich our understanding of the autistic consciousness.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44357879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His father was a Jewish diamond worker who, when the Netherlands were occupied by the Germans, was exempted from deportation. The Germans wanted to set up a diamond industry of their own and the diamond workers managed to negotiate their exemption to include their direct families as well. However, in the course of 1943 the exemption turned out to be temporary. The diamond workers and their wives and children were deported first to the Dutch transit camp Westerbork, then on to Bergen-Belsen. In her 1995 video testimony Lize Elion relates the effect of the exemption on the diamond people, e.g. their decision not to go into hiding because the exemption seemed to offer better chances of survival. From the perspective of a child from a manual worker's family Gerrit Cohensius gives an account of what happened in Westerbork and Bergen-Belsen. Personal interviews with Robby Engelander and personal documents from his family give detailed insight into the fate of the men, the women and the children of the diamond transport, of which Sieg Maandag and his family were part too.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44199359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The prolific Dutch Jewish painter and ceramicist, Sieg Maandag, was among the few surviving orphaned children of Amsterdam's so-called Diamond group of prisoners. For a time, they and their families formed part of a \"privileged\" group of prisoners held in Bergen-Belsen. This essay will consider Maandag's oeuvre as a vehicle for the development of a language of self-expression related to his own trauma and sense of his \"privilege\", demonstrating how former \"privileged\" persecutees endured periods of alternating or simultaneous expectation, uncertainty, waiting, hope, and fear connected specifically to the capricious status of exemption that they shared, and how knowledge of their \"privileged\" status was later assimilated into narratives of survival. Maandag's allusive work demonstrates recurring expressions of the psychological terrain of \"privilege\" and trauma, which are inextricably bound together due to the trajectory and fate of his family during the Holocaust.","PeriodicalId":44377,"journal":{"name":"AMERICAN IMAGO","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45236860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
