First of all, chain codes are tracked in an edge image. After the curvature estimated, the corners in chain codes can be detected, and chain codes are separated at the corners. Chain codes of line segments are recognized, and only the chain codes, which represent line segments, are kept. Parameters of line segments are estimated according to the chain codes, and the piecewise line segments are linked based on the linking criterions. Experiments with images show that the method is effective for line detection.","PeriodicalId":443433,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Vehicular Electronics and Safety, 2005.","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114985798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first approach is for the potentiometer to apply in the traditional steering system, in which there is not controller based on a micro-processor, and the system performs its steering tasks only by the differential output of the double potentiometers. The second approach called as steer-by-wire is finally presented, in which one potentiometer is used for collecting the steering signal from the driver, the other one used for collecting the pinion angle signal of the steering gear, and these signals are all input into a controller for a precise and safe steering. The final investigation result shows the potentiometer will do more important role in the future steering system, and its successful application can excite the more fast innovation of the steering system.","PeriodicalId":443433,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Vehicular Electronics and Safety, 2005.","volume":"164 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124602176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, the continuous-time stochastic linear system is discretized. Secondly, based on the measurements from multiple sensors, a pseudo measurement equation is constructed at the fusion center. As a result, the process noise and the pseudo measurement noise are correlated. Finally, the Kalman filter towards one-step correlated process and measurement noise is utilized to achieve the optimal state estimate at the fusion center. Simulation instance is provided to compare the new algorithm with the existing least-square approach and sequential processing approach, the results show the optimality of the new algorithm developed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":443433,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Vehicular Electronics and Safety, 2005.","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133821769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to find the optimal control algorithm, optimization problem is defined, which finds the optimal control variables to minimize the fuel consumption while satisfying the constraint equations. Scale factors in weighting the motor usage are selected as the control variables on how to distribute the demanded vehicle power into the electric motor and the internal combustion engine. Dynamic models of the HEV powertrain are represented with state space equations. The optimization problem is solved for the single shaft parallel HEV and double shaft parallel HEV using the HEV performance simulator developed in MATLAB Simulink and the mathematical optimization algorithm, SQP which is based on FORTRAN for multi-variables design optimization. It is found that the optimal control algorithm of the double shaft HEV provides better fuel economy than the single shaft HEV since the recuperation energy due to the regenerative braking can be increased by the engine off and clutch operation.","PeriodicalId":443433,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Vehicular Electronics and Safety, 2005.","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123570869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a real-time system to detect the driver's eye state. The system combines several basic image processing techniques which can achieve better performance than other single arithmetic. And we contrive different methods to detect the eye state in the daytime and at night. Firstly, the system combines the skin-color matching & vertical projection in the daytime and applies the intensity adjusting & vertical projection at night to detect and track the face region, and then validates it by geometric symmetry of face; secondly, we apply the horizontal projection to detect the eye position and validate it by some facial features; Lastly, a new complexity function is employed to judge the eye state, and the frequency of eye closure is registered. The method in our paper can detect whether the eyes are close more efficient than many other methods and it is more real-time with less computation. The experiment results show that this method is a robust and real-time one.","PeriodicalId":443433,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Vehicular Electronics and Safety, 2005.","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130032943","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Congestion control for VANETs has not been studied thoroughly so far - but this feature is extremely necessary for VANET applications and network performance. Due to the high mobility and the resulting highly dynamic network topology, congestion control needs to be performed in a decentralized and self-organized way, locally in each VANET node. This paper presents a novel concept for utility-based congestion control and packet forwarding in VANETs. The control algorithm uses an application-specific utility function and encodes the quantitative utility information in each transmitted data packet in a transparent way for all users within a local environment. A decentralized algorithm then calculates the \"average utility value\" of each individual node based on the utility of its data packets and assigns a share of the available data rate proportional to the relative priority. For performance evaluation, the proposed decentralized utility-based packet forwarding and congestion control (UBPFCC) is implemented on top of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol. Network simulations including vehicular mobility models demonstrate that UBPFCC avoids the typical starvation of some nodes inside the network and shows a significant increase of efficiency in information dissemination and fairness.","PeriodicalId":443433,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Vehicular Electronics and Safety, 2005.","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121633594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A small engine which is used to supply power approximately equal to the average load power is coaxially configured with an induction motor with an external rotor which is used to supply the peaking power required by the required peaking load of vehicle. The motor can also absorb the excess power of the engine while the load power is less than the peak power. The excess power will be used to charge the vehicular battery pack to keep state of charge (SOC) of the battery pack as the regenerative braking power. With the electrically assist principle, a controller for hybrid ISG assemble has been developed, and a fuzzy logic control strategy used to control the ISG system and motor was discussed. The control system for hybrid propulsion system is responsible for collecting information relative to vehicle and judges the load rate of engine and motor, and finally decides the operating state and rate of power distribution between engine and motor. By optimizing the system efficiency and minimizing fuel consumption and emission, the optimal performance will be reached. Electronics control unit (ECU) of hybrid propulsion system controls ECUs of engine, motor and automatic mechanics transmission (AMT), and monitors the state of battery management system (BMS), they communicate with each other and exchange information by control area network (CAN) bus interface. In order to accelerate developing process of hybrid propulsion system, a rapid developing system called on-line debugging and programming software has been developed. This system runs in PC, and communicates with the ECU of hybrid propulsion system by serial communication interface (SCI) RS232, but the ECU of hybrid propulsion system communicates with the ECUs of engine, AMT, BMS and accessory by CAN bus. This system mainly includes the following functions: (1) field test and bench test, (2) parameter calibration, (3) on-ling debugging for HEV, AMT and CAN bus, (4) vehicle dynamics simulation, (5) on-line programming, (6) troubleshooting etc. Those functions may achieve the rapid development on hardware and software of control system for hybrid propulsion system. In addition, the on-line debugging and programming system can monitor state information of overall system and modify parametric maps or update control program onboard by the on-line debugging or programming function. Based on the on-line debugging software package developed by our group at HUBEI automotive industries institute, the hybrid ISG assemble and its controller have been designed. Finally, experiments verify that the system is feasible and reliable, it can save 30%-50% developing time for the ISG hybrid propulsion system.","PeriodicalId":443433,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Vehicular Electronics and Safety, 2005.","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126043631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In our vision-based lane departure detection system, we use a single camera as input. In this paper, we discuss how to detect the lanes marking on the road and get the relationship between vehicle and road. Some measurements are derived to calculate TLC (time to lane crossing), for measuring the position of the vehicle relative to the lanes. Besides, the forward-looking predicting mode is introduced to establish the relationship among driver, vehicle, and road. Further more, the criterion can be got to tell whether there is an unintended lane departure. Simulations show that our vision-based lane departure approach does provide an effective alarm when the state of driver goes wrong.","PeriodicalId":443433,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Vehicular Electronics and Safety, 2005.","volume":"6 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120920037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
