By experimenting with various consolatory strategies and oscillating between them, Boccaccio shows that there is no one universal solution to hardship and that consolation should be attuned to the sufferer’s particular circumstances. As the first in-depth study of Pera’s work on the subject, it aims to position her as an original voice within contemporary (garden) writing and to locate garden writing in relation to current ecological, ecocritical, and environmental debates. By drawing on philosophy, aesthetics, and critical plant studies, I demonstrate how Pera’s work engages both with the aesthetic tradition of garden representation and with ecocritical concerns. In particular, I discuss how Pera establishes a close dialogue with Gilles Clément’s ‘humanist ecology’, in order to shape her ‘orto/giardino’ as a ‘planetary garden’. Through an analysis of her main garden books, I show how Pera fashions herself as a ‘scrittrice-giardiniera’ while proposing a virtuous example of care for the planet that recognises the centrality of plants in our world.","PeriodicalId":44221,"journal":{"name":"Italian Studies","volume":"78 1","pages":"91 - 106"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41405408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Il presente contributo disamina le modalità e le finalità che la sintassi marcata esplica all’interno del progetto romanzesco, che è caratterizzato da sperimentazione del complesso congegno narrativo e linguistico. Adottando un taglio storico-linguistico, si esaminano la posposizione del soggetto al verbo (soggetto rematico e soggetto tematico parentetico), la dislocazione a sinistra e il tema sospeso. Mediante analisi qualitative di selezionati campioni testuali, si mostrano tre funzioni-chiave della sintassi marcata utili per l’interpretazione del romanzo: i colpi di scena del novellare; la caratterizzazione degli eroi romantici e della loro lingua; la tecnica del ritratto e il tono favoloso. Lo studio rivela che l’uso della sintassi marcata è volto alla creazione di un’epopea leggendaria e favolosa, i cui eroi hanno tratti romantici e melodrammatici.","PeriodicalId":44221,"journal":{"name":"Italian Studies","volume":"78 1","pages":"76 - 90"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47113015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

L’emergere di un amore diverso da quelli convenzionalmente presentati, che nulla ha che vedere con la trasgressione o con l’orientamento di genere ma, più semplicemente riguarda un incontro di anime, illumina il funzionamento di una relazione originariamente tra insegnante e studente: è evidente che l’incontro promuove aspettative reali e vicendevoli. Le interpretazioni culturali delle isole e il loro significato simbolico e psicologico nella tradizione letteraria recente (Ortese, Ramondino, Morante) confermano questa prospettiva ermeneutica.","PeriodicalId":44221,"journal":{"name":"Italian Studies","volume":"78 1","pages":"123 - 137"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-11-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45294782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the one hand, examination of the relationship with the host country analyses whether and how the early phase of the pandemic impacted on Italians’ social integration and sense of embeddedness in Welsh society. On the other, a focus is placed on the relationship with the origin country, aiming to detect whether the crisis strengthened feelings of nostalgia and a desire to ‘return home’. To this end, four main fields are considered: social relations, cultural practices, sources of information, and travel patterns. Addressing these fields, discussion assesses the practices and strategies that Italian migrants in Wales engaged with in order to maintain a connection with Italy despite the limitations and challenges posed by COVID-19.","PeriodicalId":44221,"journal":{"name":"Italian Studies","volume":"77 1","pages":"383 - 399"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43949792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These complex processes of memory-making are illustrated through a comparative analysis of Wes Anderson’s Bar Luce (2015), Thomas Hirschhorn’s Gramsci Monument (2013), and Muna Mussie’s Oblio (2021). The selected works, which together add transnational nuance to James E. Young’s concept of the ‘counter-monument’, enshrine the creativity which can reside in acts of forgetting and misremembering, in experiencing things second-hand or at a distance, and in re-materialising memory through tropes of ephemerality, portability, and dislocation.","PeriodicalId":44221,"journal":{"name":"Italian Studies","volume":"77 1","pages":"367 - 382"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43684308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
