Viaggio nella Cina, the travel account published in 1956 following the writer’s trip to socialist China in 1955. I will discuss the interaction between the photographs taken by the author during the journey and the text. The issue of the literary genre will also be examined, investigating the nature of the travel journal as a combination of both a descriptive account and an autobiographical diary. I will then discuss how this photo-textual blend functions both theoretically – by analysing the nature of the photographic medium in relation with the text – and practically – by providing examples of the ekphrastic interaction of the two media in Fortini’s icastic depiction of colours and crowds. The allegorical value of the account of socialist China is then brought into question, with particular focus on the use of comparison as an argumentative strategy.KEYWORDS: Franco FortiniPhoto-texttravel literatureallegoryWalter Benjamin AcknowledgmentsThe research for this article took place during a period of study at the University of Cambridge and included a visit to the Centro Interdipartimentale di Ricerca Franco Fortini at the University of Siena in April 2022. Scholarship has focused on its representation following 1945. Yet the fact that a photographic portrait of Matera existed before this time is often overlooked. Photographs of the city pre-dating 1920 were mostly published as postcards by local entrepreneurs. This article analyzes a selection of these in the context of evolving representations of Matera and Basilicata in the early twentieth century. Providing insight into the aesthetic and socio-cultural construction of this important aspect of the city’s early photographic portrait, it emphasises that postcards issued by local enterprises offered a perspective on Matera and Basilicata from the publisher’s point of view. They complemented a less prejudiced and sometimes positive portrayal of the region – emerging in a variety of texts, photographs, and public events – that modified narratives often narrowly focused on describing it as impoverished, backward, and isolated.","PeriodicalId":44221,"journal":{"name":"Italian Studies","volume":"317 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135412630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article argues that the ‘Giuntina’ can be understood in relation to a Florentine context that reacted in opposition to Bembo’s codification, in his seminal dialogue Prose nelle quali si ragiona della volgar lingua (1525), of Petrarch and Boccaccio as supreme models for poetry and prose, and his devaluing Dante. This reaction led to the promotion of Dante’s lyric poetry through a collection printed by the leading Florentine publishing house. The essay presents new evidence to show that the original programme of revaluing Dante that lies behind the collection and its scope seem to have undergone a transformation, which obscured the force of that re-evaluation in the final print of the 1527 anthology.","PeriodicalId":44221,"journal":{"name":"Italian Studies","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135884231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By looking at early modern biographical accounts, archival documents, works of art, and Renaissance poetry, this contribution challenges the stereotype that presents people with deafness as outcasts and emphasises that the consideration of intersectional factors was essential to how early modern people responded to impairment. The present study retraces the evolution of the historical debate on the educability of deaf people and analyses interconnections between deafness and art practice. Through the careers of five artists, Ercole Sarti from Ferrara, Giuseppe Badaracco from Genoa, Filippo Ceppaluni from Naples, Aurelio Martelli from Siena, and Giovanni Lo Coco from Acireale, their artworks, and documents pertaining to their lives, the study explores how each of them asserted their own profession, identity, and social position via art practice.","PeriodicalId":44221,"journal":{"name":"Italian Studies","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135884229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Le prose della raccolta sono analizzate su più livelli: metrico, sintattico, linguistico e contenutistico. Ciò che i testi evidenziano, inoltre, è un complesso – ma non inedito, per l’autore – legame tra la prosa poetica e le opere pittoriche, in questo caso caravaggesche. Tale connessione fa emergere non soltanto un io lirico instabile e non univoco, che tende a istituire tre diversi modelli di soggettività, ma anche una riflessione che il poeta fa a partire dalla questione della reversibilità dello sguardo. Infatti, il rapporto tra i testi e l’opera di Caravaggio non rientra all’interno delle tecniche dell’èkphrasis: si tratta di opere che fanno emergere la presenza di uno sguardo senza osservatore; uno sguardo che fa del lettore uno spettatore, e dello scrittore un osservatore che è – allo stesso tempo – osservato.KEYWORDS: Rossi Preceruttiprose poeticheCaravaggiosguardoreversibilità Disclosure StatementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Notes1 L’esordio è con Entrebescar (Forlì: Forum Quinta Generazione, 1982).
