In 1993-94, about 61 per cent of the rural and 54 per cent of the urban population was calorie deficient. In 2011-12, the prevalence of calorie deficient rural population increased by 5.2 percentage points, and urban population by about 1.5 percentage points. Across income classes, we observe incidence of calorie deficiency declining with an increase in income, but it also exists even among the rich households. Comparatively, the prevalence of protein deficiency is less severe. The spatial patterns of nutritional insecurity show a higher prevalence of calorie deficiency in states with lower incidence of poverty. Further, we find little, if any, evidence of a change in regional patterns of inequality in nutritional insecurity in the past two decades.","PeriodicalId":441823,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Economics Research Review","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116009708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study has found that the economic reforms have led not only to a sharp rise in the growth rates across all states, but also to the disappearance of the relationship between initial income and growth. The growth of agriculture in India appears almost to be decoupled from the rapid economic growth. The study has concluded that the structural convergence of the economy has started in 6 out of 15 states, suggesting that a faster growth may bring structural transformation closer than what the national picture has suggested. There are strong common trends in the sectoral composition of the economy across the states, but with wide variations around them. For the sectoral composition of agriculture, on the other hand, there are both common and divergent trends. In agriculture, changes in comparative advantage and trade opportunities are the additional important drivers of change in the sector composition of output.","PeriodicalId":441823,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Economics Research Review","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116113179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The area under vegetables, fruits and pulse crops has registered a higher (7–11%) growth compared to cereals, oilseeds, fibre and other crop groups (<1%). Over the years, the share of cereal crop groups has decreased significantly from 32.53 per cent to 28.81 per cent and that of fruits and vegetables has increased considerably from 0.10 per cent to 0.25 per cent for fruits and from 4.66 per cent to 7.80 per cent for vegetable crops. The transition probability matrix has indicated that over the years, horticultural crop groups have retained a higher share (92%) in terms of area under crops. The Northern Dry Zone (Gadag taluk) has been found to be more diversified with Entropy index of 0.99 and household crop richness of 3.20 compared to 0.55 and 1.90 in the Northern Transitional Zone (Shirahatti taluk), respectively. The major factors influencing crop diversification have been identified as size of landholding, gross irrigated area, and net return realised per farm.","PeriodicalId":441823,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Economics Research Review","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122340699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Contrary' to the previous research this paper shows that the impact depends on whether the subsidies are infra-marginal or extra-marginal in nature. Econometric analysis of the pooled cross sectional and time series data for the selected states reveals a negative impact of the grain procurement on the weighted average prices of rice and wheat. Thus, the so called Dantwala-Mellor hypothesis of positive impact is not supported by the data.","PeriodicalId":441823,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Economics Research Review","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122576132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An assessment has been made about the change in the cost of production and profitability in rice production due to adoption of modem rice technologies. The study has covered three periods viz. 1981–82 to 1990–91, 1991–92 to 2000–01 and 1981–82 to 2000–01. The overall annual compound growth rate in area, production and productivity of rice have been found as 0.02, 2.89 and 2.87 per cent, respectively during the period 1980–81 to 2000–01. This shows that area under rice has remained almost stagnant but production and productivity have received an impetus in their growth. The study has revealed that adoption of modern technologies had a positive impact on rice productivity and income to the farming households in Bihar.","PeriodicalId":441823,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Economics Research Review","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129603751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

India is no exception to this menace and diverse statistics have shown that the problem is threatening agricultural production on 5.5 million to 13 million hectares. About one million hectare area is seriously affected, where agricultural production has been completely abandoned. To manage the problem in most fertile and irrigated areas, investment on drainage was initiated in the north-west region of India. This paper attempts to assess the benefits of installing sub-surface drainage for salinity control. The results have identified several farm-level benefits because of installing sub-surface drainage. These include (i) substantial increase in farm income, (ii) crop intensification and diversification towards high-value crops, and (iii) generation of employment opportunities. A proper management of this problem also helps in reducing income inequalities. Despite economic, social and environmental benefits, the adoption and acceptance of the subsurface drainage technology is always questioned, the specific reasons for which are: (i) indivisible nature of the technology, (ii) lack of collective action by the beneficiaries, (iii) conflicting objectives of the beneficiaries, and (iv) growing number of free riders. These could be controlled by appropriate institutional arrangements. The study has concluded that the technology dissemination without appropriate institutional arrangements might not yield the desired results.","PeriodicalId":441823,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Economics Research Review","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129841873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cost of methane emissions has been internalized in the production process by taxing these emissions with carbon prices. Further, an iso-elastic supply function has been used to estimate the shift in supply of rice due to price internalization. A negative shift in the production has been observed both with market and shadow prices of carbon, which were considered as the tax levels. Although with the introduction of emission tax, the demand price increases, the higher costs and low efficiency of current mitigation measures make carbon taxation an unattractive proposition from economic and social welfare perspective. Small landholders, because of emission tax led increase in cost of production might shift from rice to other crops. This induced change in land-use would have consequence that could overpower the direct effects of emission tax. Successful implementation of emission taxation as a GHG mitigation strategy would depend on the development of cost-effective mitigation at farm level, and the instruments that can offset welfare losses for smallholders.","PeriodicalId":441823,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Economics Research Review","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128455970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pesticide economy of India is more export-oriented in nature. The growth rate of domestic consumption of pesticides, however, over different decades has shown wide fluctuations, though the overall trend is negative (−2.48%). While analysing the trend of pesticide consumption in 29 states and Union Territories (UTs) of India for the period 2000 to 2013, a positive growth trend has been observed in 17 states/UTs. The positive growth has been observed highest in Jammu & Kashmir, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Tripura. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana are the states that accounted for 70 per cent of total pesticide consumption. The use-intensity has been found highest in Jammu and Kashmir, followed by Punjab and Haryana. However, Punjab and Haryana have exhibited a declining trend in pesticide consumption. On the contrary, Meghalaya where the intensity of application is comparatively low, has registered an increasing trend in pesticide consumption. The majority areas in NE region in general apply low levels of pesticides and are in a declining mode of consumption, except the states like Sikkim, Meghalaya, Tripura, Manipur and Nagaland (positive growth rate). The paper has also discussed the retail sale pattern of pesticides. The paper has highlighted the need for critical review of mismatch in policy and governance in the pesticide sector.","PeriodicalId":441823,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Economics Research Review","volume":"237 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128795732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
