The study aims to use three‐dimensional spatial stimulation of the socket wall to assess if bioactive composite constructs could generate mechanostimulative activity.Analysis of the biomechanical behavior of the three‐dimensional bioactive composite constructs was done in a model created using ANSYS, and mechanical properties were assessed using finite element analysis.Total deformation on the mandible was higher in alginate bioglass and chitosan alginate bioglass than gelatin. Bioglass composites were capable of generating a higher strain on the surrounding alveolar bone than gelatin. The maximum principal elastic strain and equivalent (von Mises) stress of chitosan and bioglass were higher than those of gelatin.Differential stress/strain generated on the alveolar bone with a three‐dimensional approach from early stages of remodeling will have a profound effect on the reduction of alveolar bone loss.","PeriodicalId":44181,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140655001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These tests were conducted before and after 10 min of mental arithmetic task. Psychological state was evaluated by comparing heart rate and blood pressure. Induction of mental stress was confirmed by significant activation of the cardiovascular system after the mental arithmetic task.Although ATPS showed a statistically significant increase after mental stress (P = 0.01), DTTS showed no significant change (P > 0.05).This study revealed that the influence of psychological state tended to appear in the perception of force exerted on the teeth. Therefore, periodontal sensation may be blunted by mental stress, even in healthy individuals. Patients may be exposed to mental stress during dental and oral maxillofacial treatment, and the occlusal sensory threshold may be altered; therefore, caution is essential during prosthetic and other occlusion‐related treatments.","PeriodicalId":44181,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140659310","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 27 patients were included. The patients were on different types of anticoagulants: vitamin K antagonists (one patient), non‐vitamin K oral anticoagulants (NOACs) (five), antiplatelet agents (15), dual antiplatelet therapy (five), and combination of anticoagulant and antiplatelet agents (one).One patient taking an anticoagulant (NOACs: apixaban) and antiplatelet agent (clopidogrel) showed mild bleeding at the implant placement site in the lower right canine area, and gauze compression was applied to control the bleeding. No special treatment was required for the other patients. There were no implant failures after surgery.This study shows that the flapless immediate implant placements after tooth extraction for patients taking antithrombotics can be safely executed under adequate hemostasis without medication cessation. However, when anticoagulants and antiplatelets are taken together, it is speculated that surgeons may need careful hemorrhage management. Future research should include larger patient cohorts to yield more comprehensive evidence.","PeriodicalId":44181,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140682995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CXCL10 production from salivary gland ductal cells via the Janus kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathway has been suggested to be involved in glandular inflammation in pSS. We aimed to investigate JAK1, JAK2, phosphorylated JAK1, and phosphorylated JAK2 expression in labial salivary gland (LSG) tissues from patients with pSS to evaluate the potential of JAK inhibitors as therapeutic agents for pSS.Immunohistochemical analysis was performed using LSG tissues of patients with pSS (n = 10), non‐SS patients (n = 5), and healthy controls (n = 5). The LSG sections were scored to determine the expression levels of JAK1, JAK2, phosphorylated JAK1, and phosphorylated JAK2 in the ductal and acinar epithelium.In acinar epithelial cells of LSG tissues, JAK1, JAK2, and phosphorylated JAK1 expression was significantly lower in patients with pSS than in the controls. Significantly high expression of phosphorylated JAK1 and phosphorylated JAK2 was observed in the ductal epithelial cells of patients with pSS. However, there was no significant association between phosphorylated JAK1 or JAK2 expression levels and inflammation degree. Furthermore, immunofluorescence analysis revealed JAK2 phosphorylation in many CD3+ T cells infiltrating the LSG tissues.The results suggest JAK2 activation in both ductal epithelial cells and infiltrating CD3+ T cells in LSG tissues of patients with pSS. JAK inhibitors may be effective therapeutic agents for pSS by regulating both chemokine production from salivary gland cells and effector T cell activation.","PeriodicalId":44181,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140689103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chronic inflammation may be involved in the development of malignancy. We report three cases of gingival cancer that may have been associated with peri‐implantitis.All three patients were referred to our department for detailed examination of a mass or ulcerative lesion around implants placed in their family dental clinics. One case of cancer was associated with oral lichen planus and peri‐implantitis. Two cases of cancer were associated with peri‐implantitis. Surgery for gingival cancer was successfully performed. All three pathological diagnoses were well‐differentiated squamous cell carcinoma.Chronic inflammation is a risk factor for malignant tumors, suggesting the importance of its maintenance.","PeriodicalId":44181,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140709805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such patients often need to undergo minor dental surgery to restore their oral function; however, they usually experience post‐treatment complications that directly reduce their quality of life. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the frequency of complications occurring after minor dental surgery and identify predictors of delayed healing (one of the most frequent complications) among patients aged over 65 years.Patients who visited the Department of Oral Diagnosis and Medicine at Hokkaido University Hospital from 2015 to 2022 were selected and classified into the non‐delayed (n = 87) and delayed (n = 19) healing groups. The clinical backgrounds of these patients were compared between the two groups.Among 106 patients aged over 65 years, delayed healing (17.9%) was the most frequent complication after minor dental surgery. Serum albumin levels (odds ratio: 10.0; 95% confidence interval: 2.15–46.6) significantly differed between the delayed and non‐delayed healing groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that a serum albumin level of <3.5 g/dl (odds ratio: 10.1; 95% confidence interval: 1.83–56.2) was significantly associated with delayed healing.This study proposed that serum albumin level is a potential predictor of delayed healing in patients aged over 65 years who undergo minor dental surgery. In clinical practice, dentists are required to evaluate and improve nutritional status of older patients even before minor dental surgery.","PeriodicalId":44181,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140732488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because SAEW has been applied to various foods as the disinfectant, SAEW is expected to be used in the medical field. In this study, we evaluated the bactericidal effect of SAEW on various oral bacteria.The bactericidal activity of SAEW against cariogenic bacteria, periodontopathogenic bacteria, and antibiotic‐resistant bacteria was evaluated.We first examined the effect of SAEW on Streptococcus mutans UA159 with different reaction time or the number of bacterial cells. SAEW showed complete bactericidal activity against up to 107 cells within 1 min and even 10 s. Against cariogenic bacteria, periodontopathogenic bacteria, and antibiotic‐resistant bacteria, we evaluated the bactericidal effect of SAEW against 10 S. mutans clinical isolates, three periodontopathogenic bacteria, and 18 cephalosporin‐resistant Gram‐negative bacteria, and we found complete killing against all bacteria. Various dilutions (25%, 50%, and 75%) of SAEW by water still showed complete bactericidal activity, while dilutions by artificial saliva lost the bactericidal activity significantly, with 23.3% bactericidal activity even by 75% SAEW. Storage of SAEW for 7 days at room temperature still showed complete killing activity.Our results demonstrated that SAEW has a high antibacterial effect on oral bacteria, indicating the possibility of clinical use in the dental field such as disinfection of dental devices and oral care.","PeriodicalId":44181,"journal":{"name":"Oral Science International","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2024-01-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139614147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
