However, different methods have been proposed for needle EMG placement in the FPL. This study aimed to determine the optimal needle insertion position for the examination of the FPL via needle EMG under ultrasound guidance.Methods: This study included 15 men (30 upper limbs) and 13 women (26 upper limbs). At the mid-forearm level, the angles between the vertical line descending from the radial side of the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) tendon and radial artery (angle A), flexor digitorum profundus 1 (angle B), and median nerve (MN) (angle C) were measured. Angle D was defined as the average of angles A and B.Results: The median value of angle D was –19.8°. The probability of radial artery injury at an angle D of 10° was 10.7%. The likelihood of MN injury was 7.1%.Conclusion: Needle insertion through the FCR tendon is relatively safe, although the risk of neurovascular injury remains. Therefore, an ultrasound examination could be considered as an assistive method.","PeriodicalId":440658,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Electrodiagnosis and Neuromuscular Diseases","volume":"80 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139132230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microvascular decompression has become the most effective treatment for HFS. However, despite numerous electrophysiological studies investigating factors such as ephaptic transmission, ectopic excitation between individual nerve fibers, and hyperexcitability of the facial motor nucleus, there is still debate about the exact pathogenesis of HFS. For over 40 years, researchers have been conducting electrophysiological studies in clinical settings to better understand the pathogenesis of HFS. These studies have employed techniques including the lateral spread response, blink reflex test, facial F-waves, and transcranial electrical stimulation. Although a peripheral nerve mechanism was historically considered most likely to be responsible for this condition, recent studies are increasingly pointing to a central mechanism as the primary culprit behind HFS. This article seeks to shed light on the pathogenesis of HFS by reviewing the key findings from electrophysiological studies carried out over the years.","PeriodicalId":440658,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Electrodiagnosis and Neuromuscular Diseases","volume":" 648","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139136681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In older adults, peripheral neuropathy is associated with increased falls, as well as functional and cognitive decline. The current medical management of peripheral neuropathy mostly involves symptomatic management. It is important to identify the underlying etiology of peripheral neuropathy and to address the risk of falls in older adult patients. Once the risk of falls is identified, fall prevention strategies need to be implemented.","PeriodicalId":440658,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Electrodiagnosis and Neuromuscular Diseases","volume":"86 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139131908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
