L'explication se distingue du raisonnement par son statut de discours, censé mettre le détective en position d'énoncer la vérité. Or cette visée communicative est souvent ce qui fait obstacle à la visée figurale ou structurelle de l'explication, qu'elle transforme en «histoire». Dans sa portée grammaticale - elle restitue un sujet absent, quelle articule au verbe du délit - l'explication a partie liée avec le fantasme, permettant à des représentations fortes (le meurtre) de faire surface dans la langue, par le biais d'une parole qui prend le risque de la violence ou de l'absurdité. Au-delà de la machine rationalisante prisée par les classiques du genre, l'explication policière doit inévitablement confronter ses propres fondements subjectifs.","PeriodicalId":440534,"journal":{"name":"Recherches anglaises et nord-américaines","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115768125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Relying on an Althusserian and Butlerian framework, the author shows that, although a sense of déjà vu strikes Alice (and the reader) when she meets them, the nursery rhyme characters’ attempts to resist their predetermined fate endow them with a new form of authenticity. Indeed, they are interpellated as subjects by a cultural Ideological State Apparatus (the nursery rhymes) and even though they cannot reject this interpellation altogether, they can displace and rework it. The Tweedle brothers, Humpty Dumpty, and the Lion and the Unicorn engage in recurrent metaleptic struggles with Alice, which make it possible for them to counter-interpellate their interpellator.","PeriodicalId":440534,"journal":{"name":"Recherches anglaises et nord-américaines","volume":"229 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115923650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The underlying coherence and internal drive of Chomskyan discourse is thus brought to light, together with the unavoidable ideological cost of the implicit guiding principles of Chomskyan heuristic. This approach can in no way challenge the empirical validity of precise hypotheses on the specific nature of Universal Grammar in the particular case of language, and is merely intended to give food for thought to those linguists who do not insist on failing to see the wood for the trees.","PeriodicalId":440534,"journal":{"name":"Recherches anglaises et nord-américaines","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124129688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In doing so, I draw upon critical ethnography and discourse analysis (Fairclough, 1995), using multiple field methods to highlight the different conceptions of what being Canadian, multilingual and multicultural means to these youth and the ways in which they position themselves vis-à-vis the acquisition of French as official language. I furthermore illustrate how some of their lived social and linguistic practices problematize social categories and labels. This work acknowledges the creation of social spaces for overlapping identities, which could possibly challenge the status quo, crossing both societal and social borders in Canada and beyond.","PeriodicalId":440534,"journal":{"name":"Recherches anglaises et nord-américaines","volume":"143 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114409973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, this paper investigates what it means to be a hyphenated Canadian citizen, contrasting the experiential narrative of a French-Canadian Educator with the imagined narrative of Canadian Citizenship brought by a Pakistani-Canadian immigrant. Both stories are structured by the dualities of insider, or French-Canadian, and outsider, or Pakistani-Canadian experiences. To ‘outsiders’, Canada’s multicultural mosaic forms a cohesive national narrative ; but within this mosaic lie enmeshed layers of narrative experience. The inside-outside narratives of minority groups share many similarities across apparent cultural divides. Opportunities for mutual understanding and empathy emerge from the sharing of these stories, particularly, those concerned with concepts of Canadian citizenship in a multicultural framework. Often the language that we choose to define ourselves by creates borders that imply difference ; to become a truly multicultural society we must risk looking beyond labels to the shared role of cultural minorities in Canada’s ‘constructed’ national identity.","PeriodicalId":440534,"journal":{"name":"Recherches anglaises et nord-américaines","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114896250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
