Using the case example of 1960s protests against the demolition of Leipzig's University Church, it delineates between informants who joined out of utilitarian self-interest and those who joined out of personal conviction. This latter, idealist brand of informants proved particularly useful for the Stasi, as their fundamental loyalty was typically camouflaged by their critique and desire for reform. In both cases, one must intertwine each side of an informant's double life to understand the everyday entanglement of East German lived reality.","PeriodicalId":43954,"journal":{"name":"German Studies Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140468638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The rapid diffusion of colonial beverages in early modern Europe is well established in literature on consumption and material culture. But historians have yet to adequately answer questions concerning the way these beverages influenced material culture in intermediate regions, which were neither centers of (global) trade networks nor at their periphery. This article argues that while rural, intermediate areas lagged behind the development of centers, they also produced new forms of material drinking culture distinct from cities.","PeriodicalId":43954,"journal":{"name":"German Studies Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140466145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the time of passage, these laws had a facilitative purpose. They were intended to funnel children abroad so they could avoid the degrading effects of begging and factory work. Decades later and inspired by growing moral outrage, regional school authorities repurposed these legal norms to inhibit the numbers of children heading abroad. This article analyzes the shifting sensibilities about territorial sovereignty and childhood to show how these norms were transformed via a dialogue between text and application, laws and their enforcement.","PeriodicalId":43954,"journal":{"name":"German Studies Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140468437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the 1680s, the Landleute petitioned the council of Lucerne to exclude the Hintersassen from the forest pastures and to weaken their property rights. This article contextualizes these attempts and investigates the conflict's impact on social and economic dynamics in the Entlebuch valley. The history of legal inequality in the Entlebuch valley allows us to engage with received narratives about commons and to reflect about the importance of contextualizing the commons in order to understand their historical function and wider consequences.","PeriodicalId":43954,"journal":{"name":"German Studies Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139965929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
