DESSERT is capable of allocating a mix of different speed operators for the same operation while satisfying a global time constraint. Initial allocation corresponds to the fastest possible schedule which is iteratively refined by trading off the slack time available against operator cost reduction. Finally the unique capability of DESSERT in enumerating design points (left unezplored by all previous approaches) is illustrated on a synthesis benchmark.","PeriodicalId":439235,"journal":{"name":"The Sixth International Conference on VLSI Design","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126911699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some systems perform a limited amount of transformation to optimize speed and area. In this paper we propose a new optimization technique based on successive gradient method (greedy approach) to minimize the area of linear digital systems using a combination of common subexpression elimination and modification of multiplier coefficients. Since the amount of logic required by a coefficient multiplier is dependent on the value of coefficient, the given system is transformed, using splitting of coefficients, in such a way that the new set of multiplier coefficients require less logic and area. The new synthesis scheme generates functionally equivalent but structurally different circuits with a 15% to 40% reduction in area, over conventional methods, for a set of benchmark circuits.","PeriodicalId":439235,"journal":{"name":"The Sixth International Conference on VLSI Design","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129578972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The derived information is used to produce bindings that lead to efficient communication structures in the final layouts. It is important because routing may account for a significant portion of the layout area and long communication lines tend to lead to longer machine state cycle times. It becomes even more critical us feature sizes are reduced. The heuristics in this paper use a new grid-based binding approach that produces quulity results on the commonly run benchmarks in only a few tenths of a second of CPU time on a Sun 41490. The work presented in [his paper also has an impact on research in partitioning and in bringing useful information from higher levels of abstraction down to final layout.","PeriodicalId":439235,"journal":{"name":"The Sixth International Conference on VLSI Design","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129796140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It enables evaluating logic module alternatives differing in granularity and functionality, so as to develop an architecture thatis optimum in terms ofarea. The area efficiencygives the estimate of silicon area required by an FPGA architecture to realize designs of the specified gate capaciiy, The two major components of the area are the logic module array and the routing resources. The paper describes techniques for estimating both these components and presents results for five logic module architectures. The results are analyzed to show the effect of logic module granularity and combinational - sequential logic mix of the designs, on the area efficiency.","PeriodicalId":439235,"journal":{"name":"The Sixth International Conference on VLSI Design","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125654736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A similar result is derived also for the six-layer VHVHVH routing model, where we wish to determine whether there is a routing solution using [d,,,/3] tracks. Each block in tlie design will have a high level but accurate behaviorul model. These high level models are created during rhe design of the complete chip, and are also used for the simulation of the complete device. Given the design database of a chip, designed using these blocks, the proposed algorithm generates testplan for all the blocks of the chip. First the Test Values are set on the block to be tested. which may or may not be directly accessible from the design IOs of the IC. The algorithm tries tofinda consistent set of values to be set ut the design IOs, preserving the test values set on the internal block under test. Testplan generated consists, the values to be set and measuredat the design IOs of theIC, for carrying out the tests on that block. Implementation of this algorithm is presented with examples and results.","PeriodicalId":439235,"journal":{"name":"The Sixth International Conference on VLSI Design","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133091729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The integrated appmach presented here aims at arriving at a synthesized design with minimum area overhead. THE SCHE ME Theschemetakesaslnput, adataflow graph (DFG) (derived from a VHDL description) that serves as the input to the datapath synthesis system. Given a DFG, we have used a stochastic evolution [l J based optimization scheme for simultaneous scheduling, allocation and binding of the datapath architecture. The first step in this procedure is the creationof a resource-control step matrix from the DFG. A Finite State Machine (FSM) description for controlling this datapath is next generated from the original VHDL description and the datapath architecture being evaluated. In view ofthe high computational complexity associatedwith synthesizingthe FSM at every iteration, we have developed a scheme to estimate the complexity of the control logic directly [2] from the FSM spedfications. The stochastic evolutionscheme incorporates test synthesis procedures in every iteration of the optimization step to ensure that a datapath architecture is finally selected which is not only testable, but forwhich the total area (includingthe test area overhead) is minimum. Since most test synthesis systems described in the past are extremely computation intensive, applying these in the optimization loop of stochastic evolution has been found to be very ineffident. Instead, we have developed several efficient heuristics for test synthesis that configures the candidatedatapatharchaecturesfortest.
