Young athletes face mental challenges both in competitive sports and in school. High self-efficacy and self-regulation competence contribute to an individual’s ability to successfully master these challenges. The present study links the domains of competitive sports and academic education by investigating the relationships of self-efficacy and self-regulation to performance in mathematics lessons. Here, we compare competitive rowers ( n = 239) and “regular” students ( n = 171; total N = 410). The competitive rowers showed a higher subjective expectation of self-efficacy, which in both groups had a positive effect on mathematics grades. While self-regulation had a mediating effect on the competitive rowers in this context, we observed no significant effect for the regular students. The study provides evidence that competitive athletes are apt to use psychosocial resources fostered by professional sports training across domains.","PeriodicalId":43878,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Sportpsychologie","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45062011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study employed a quasi-experimental design, in which the experimental group ( n = 13) practiced a loving-kindness meditation (LKM) via a single in-person workshop and via an app, whereas the active control group ( n = 20) practiced progressive muscle relaxation (PMR). Both interventions lasted 1 week and were executed in the respective soccer academy. The groups completed a pre- and posttest measuring compassion, fairness, and team cohesion. In contrast to our hypothesis, we did not find an interaction effect. LKM athletes did not demonstrate greater cohesion, fairness, and compassion after the intervention than the PMR athletes. By comparing user engagement and user rating between LKM and PMR, we conclude that LKM is as accepted as PMR by the study cohort. We suggest implementing future LKM interventions with substantial interaction parts and considering specific person-by-context interactions.","PeriodicalId":43878,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Sportpsychologie","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43160770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The COVID-19 pandemic can affect individual career transitions in athletes preparing for the Olympic Games (OG). This study reconstructs German Olympians’ career transitions while preparing for the postponed OG in Tokyo, applying the Scheme of Change for Sport Psychology Practice (SCSPP). Eleven (age: M ± SD = 26.81 ± 2.92; three females) athletes provide insights into their career transitions according to the SCSPP framework. The athletes report changes (e. g., training, professional status, missing competitions) related to emotional tensions (e. g., relief vs. disappointment) and the effects on their decision-making processes (i. e., initial coping, acceptance, adaptation). The Olympians develop identities, commonly experience relief, and describe their optimism toward Tokyo 2021. No interviewee wants to quit because of COVID-19. While preparing for Tokyo 2021, the Olympians use emotion- (e. g., vacation) and problem-oriented coping (e. g., new routines). Based on our results, we discuss recommendations for sport psychology practice.","PeriodicalId":43878,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Sportpsychologie","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47110821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although athletes are exposed to various stressors and adversities that may negatively impact mental well-being, only few studies focus on mental well-being in amateur soccer players. The study aims were to analyze mental well-being in amateur soccer players, and whether it is related to team membership. The sample consisted of N = 20 soccer teams with a total of N = 285 athletes. Mental well-being was assessed using the WHO-5 Well-Being Index, and the risk of depression was assessed using the Patient-Health Questionnaire-2. The results showed that approximately 4 % of all players were at risk of suffering from impaired mental well-being. Although the results demonstrated that team membership explained 5 % of mental well-being cases and 10 % of the risk of depression cases, no team level variables were identified that explain this variance. Group processes and environmental factors that inhibit mental well-being in soccer players should be identified in future studies.","PeriodicalId":43878,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Sportpsychologie","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2021-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42887605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
