As museums change to Museum 4.0 models (1), the STEAM exhibits and programs in museums also change. Museums 4.0 is the transformation of museums from a monolithic fixed location institution to a nimble community driven event driven organization. The Museum 4.0 becomes personalized to the visitor without fixed outcomes and without the physical restrictions of a single fixed location. As museums evolve to a Museum 4.0 model with visitor lead activities, STEAM activities within museums also change to peer to peer activities that begin outside the museum and continue as part of activities. Museum 4.0 STEAM will be a “host” connecting communities that existed before, during and after a museum’s “bricks and mortar” experience. Instead of “cookbook” experiences where you follow a specific pattern, STEAM activities become experiences that grow and change depending on the user and community involvement. Museum STEAM experiences are transitioning from workbench activities to workbench and smartphone experiences where tactile, and digital involvement are integrated. The future of STEAM Museum 4.0 experiences are opened-ended community based experiences that are customized to a user’s interests, knowledge and skills.","PeriodicalId":438783,"journal":{"name":"The STEAM Journal","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114665221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While storytelling is often considered as a form of entertainment, it has also long been used as a teaching tool as wella way of engaging listeners to come to new understanding of their world through subtle means. It is my belief that stories, particularly stories with a clear tie to students' sense of place, can be more widely applied to effectively generate interest in specific scientific topics and help students to form emotional connections with the topics under discussion. The following personal narrative describes an example of my own experience in using a traditional Arapaho tale to help a group of 4th-6th girl scouts learn about the ecological role of turkey vultures. Author/Artist Bio I am a research associate for an Earth science non-profit and CIG certified environmental educator. Through my current enrollment in the AIP Masters program at University Miami Ohio I have been researching practices for applying inquiry based learning to education ranging from an elementary school level to adult community engagement.","PeriodicalId":438783,"journal":{"name":"The STEAM Journal","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115087737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thurley","doi":"10.5642/STEAM.20160202.18","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5642/STEAM.20160202.18","url":null,"abstract":"This article presents an argument for the integration of science into English courses in order to emphasize the usefulness of a Science, Technology, Education, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education. The idea for this approach arose after the implementation of a divisional initiative to create learning communities with a STEM cohort of students called Student Persistence and Retention via Curricula, Cohorts, and Centralization (SPARC3). The author’s involvement in teaching a science-infused English course for this program inspired the argument that follows, which outlines why/how the sciences should learn from the humanities and why/ how the humanities should learn from the sciences. The purpose of this approach is to outline how important it is for first and second year collegiate educators to teach academic communication, research, and logic in college English courses using provocative science topics and literature that addresses scientific themes. In seeing issues commonly thought of as “science topics” from a different perspective, the humanities help stress analytical thinking, in-depth research, and the importance of precise rhetoric and effective communication. In doing so, this approach provides students with the cognitive tools needed to get involved in scientific discourse, research, and debate through complex reasoning skills encountered through literature, philosophy, and ethics. This study confirms that a new approach to science and the humanities is both necessary and beneficial to collegiate education due to the new demands of the twenty-first century, and the attacks on science and science literacy. Author/Artist Bio Christopher W. Thurley is an English instructor at Gaston College in Dallas, NC. He currently acts as the English department’s liaison to the science department and teaches an English course specifically designed for science majors which emphasizes the role of communication in science and the convergence of art and science. Mr. Thurley is currently writing his dissertation on the British author Anthony Burgess’s time in America and the impact the US had on Burgess’s life and work.","PeriodicalId":438783,"journal":{"name":"The STEAM Journal","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114197690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These commonalities formed the basis for a STEAM framework, which examines the intersections of five processes: noticing, wondering, visualizing, exploring, and communicating. This framed a professional development workshop on STEAM for elementary teachers. Here we define and explore these processes through both science and art perspectives, and share examples of how each of these processes were integrated to support learning. We believe that STEAM provides a well-rounded experience, allowing learners to make connections with both their minds and bodies, which ultimately enhances their learning experience. Author/Artist Bio Lori Fulton is an Assistant Professor of science education in the Institute for Teacher Education at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Her research focuses on the oral and written discourse of science at the elementary level. She teaches Elementary Science Methods and Planning and Instruction: STEM. Jamie Simpson-Steele is an Assistant Professor of arts education in the Institute for Teacher Education at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Her research interests address issues of social justice, performances of culture, arts integration, and performance as research methodology. She integrates the arts throughout her coursework in teacher preparation.","PeriodicalId":438783,"journal":{"name":"The STEAM Journal","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114888673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
