Among the more studied materials for high operating temperature detectors, PbSe and PbSe-type heavy metal selenides have been grown in the bulk, thin film and nano crystal morphologies. To better understand the effects of the substrate on the properties of these thin films, we have deposited lead selenide by physical vapor transport (PVT) method on highresistivity Si substrates and studied the characteristics of the film. Growth on silicon and glass substrates showed different morphologies compared to pure lead selenide material. It was seen that materials grown on a glass substrate possessed different morphology after annealing. FTIR was used to calculate bandgap information comparison with undoped PbSe. We will describe the details of the growth method, effect of substrate on nucleation and morphology of the pure and lead selenide material and band gap comparisons between substrates.","PeriodicalId":438348,"journal":{"name":"Sensing Technologies + Applications","volume":"360 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127581225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The anemometer takes advantage of the superior thermal and optical properties of silicon. Silicon is transparent to infrared wavelength, while it absorbs visible light. Thus, the silicon FPI can be heated by a beam injected from a red diode laser while the infrared signals go through it without any interference from the heating light. The heat loss from the silicon film will increase when the sensor is placed in stronger flow (wind), which induces a decrease in the optical path of the silicon FPI, which lead to blueshifts the output spectrum. A higher wind speed corresponds to a larger wavelength shift. By tuning the heating power, the response range and sensitivity of the anemometer is changed. Experimental results demonstrate that a wavelength shift -0.574 nm was observed for a wind speed of 4 m/s. Better sensitivity is to be expected when stronger heating applied. The proposed sensor also features simple structure, low cost and fast response.","PeriodicalId":438348,"journal":{"name":"Sensing Technologies + Applications","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127595730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SPADs detect the emission peaks of alkali salts, potassium or sodium, with spectral emission lines around 769nm and 589nm, respectively. The alkali salts are included in the gunpowder to suppress secondary flashes ignited during the muzzle flash event. The SPADs possess two crucial properties for muzzle flash imaging: (i) very high photon detection sensitivity, (ii) a unique ability to convert the optical signal to a digital signal at the source pixel, thus practically eliminating readout noise. The sole noise sources are the ones prior to the readout circuitry (optical signal distribution, avalanche initiation distribution and nonphotonic generation). This enables high sampling frequencies in the kilohertz range without significant SNR degradation, in contrast to regular CMOS image sensors. This research will demonstrate the SPAD’s ability to accurately sample and reconstruct the temporal behavior of the muzzle flash in the visible wavelength, in the presence of sunlight. The reconstructed signal is clearly distinguishable from background clutter, through exploitation of flash temporal characteristics and signal processing, which will be reported. The frame rate of ~16 KHz was chosen as an optimum between SNR degradation and temporal profile recognition accuracy. In contrast to a single SPAD, the 2D array allows for multiple events to be processed simultaneously. Moreover, a significant field of view is covered, enabling comprehensive surveillance and imaging.","PeriodicalId":438348,"journal":{"name":"Sensing Technologies + Applications","volume":"146 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133864323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many exciting methods have been presented in recent years for solving this problem and realizing imaging through a highly scattering medium, such as the wavefront modulation technique and reconstruction technique. The imaging method based on compressed sensing (CS) theory can decrease the computational complexity because it doesn't require the whole speckle pattern to realize reconstruction. One of the key premises of this method is that the object is sparse or can be sparse representation. However, choosing a proper projection matrix is very important to the imaging quality. In this paper, we analyzed that the transmission matrix (TM) of a scattering medium obeys circular Gaussian distribution, which makes it possible that a scattering medium can be used as the measurement matrix in the CS theory. In order to verify the performance of this method, a whole optical system is simulated. Various projection matrices are introduced to make the object sparse, including the fast Fourier transform (FFT) basis, the discrete cosine transform (DCT) basis and the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) basis, the imaging performances of each of which are compared comprehensively. Simulation results show that for most targets, applying the discrete wavelet transform basis will obtain an image in good quality. This work can be applied to biomedical imaging and used to develop real-time imaging through highly scattering media.","PeriodicalId":438348,"journal":{"name":"Sensing Technologies + Applications","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134312297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Mg mole fraction is confirmed by shift in the near band emission of free exciton under photoluminescence spectroscopy at room temperature. The x-ray diffraction pattern has a large peak associated to ZnO (002) from which the c-lattice constant is calculated to be 5.1967Ǻ. The nanorods (NRs) grown via sonochemical are compared to nanowires (NWs) grown using metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and hydrothermal synthesis. Also, the effect of the ZnO film used as seed layer is described and compare to a simple spin coated layer. Terahertz (THz) index of refraction and dielectric constant of wurtzite Zn1-xMgxO NWs with Mg mole fraction of 7% via sonochemical are determined using THz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). The results are compared with ZnO and ZnMgO NWs with 10% Mg mole fraction grown using MOCVD. The successful growth of Zn1-xMgxO with wurtzite structure at low temperature permits realization of the growth of heterostructures, quantum well, nanowires and nanorods on flexible substrates providing lower cost, optical and carrier confinement necessary in advanced light emitting diodes (LEDs), laser diodes (LDs) and high efficiency solar cells.","PeriodicalId":438348,"journal":{"name":"Sensing Technologies + Applications","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131530389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Breast cancer ranks second as a cause of cancer death in women in the United States. Photoacoustic (PA) imaging (PAI) provides high molecular contrast at greater depths in tissue without the use of ionizing radiation. In this work, we describe the development of a PA tomography (PAT) system and a rapid wavelength-cycling Alexandrite laser designed for clinical PAI applications. The laser produces 450 mJ/pulse at 25 Hz to illuminate the entire breast, which eliminates the need to scan the laser source. Wavelength cycling provides a pulse sequence in which the output wavelength repeatedly alternates between 755 nm and 797 nm rapidly within milliseconds. We present imaging results of breast phantoms with inclusions of different sizes at varying depths, obtained with this laser source, a 5-MHz 128-element transducer and a 128-channel Verasonics system. Results include PA images and 3D reconstruction of the breast phantom at 755 and 797 nm, delineating the inclusions that mimic tumors in the breast.","PeriodicalId":438348,"journal":{"name":"Sensing Technologies + Applications","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132620829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recombinant adenovirus serotype-5 (Ad5) viral vectors have been utilized in the settings of gene therapy, vaccination, and immunotherapy but have encountered clinical challenges because they are recognized as foreign entities to the host. This recognition leads to an immunologic clearance of the vector that contains the inserted gene of interest and prevents effective immunization(s). We have reported on a new Ad5-based viral vector technology that can be utilized as an immunization modality to induce immune responses even in the presence of Ad5 vector immunity.
