Methods 28 unilateral adult CI users (mean age 41) participated in the study. In behavioural test session, ACDT and speech tests were administered. In electrophysiological test session, sound onset and ACC responses of participants stimulated by/ui/speech structure were recorded and N1–P2 peak-to-peak amplitude and N1 latencies were determined. Results No significant correlation was found between individuals’ behavioural and electrophysiological responses but it was observed that individuals dived into two clusters in terms of ACDT responses (p < 0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between the mean ACC amplitudes of the clusters. No statistically significant difference was observed between the mean ACC N1 latency findings of the clusters, suggesting that ACC amplitude may be a better predictor than latency in auditory discrimination. Conclusion ACC measurement may be a potential clinical tool to evaluate auditory discrimination performance in individuals with CI, but using the electrophysiological and behavioural tests together may provide a more holistic perspective.","PeriodicalId":43765,"journal":{"name":"Hearing Balance and Communication","volume":"475 1","pages":"130 - 138"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88042516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method Thirty-four patients with migraine (21 female, 13 male) were recruited. The main outcome measure is to analyze the spontaneous nystagmus, VNG findings, and the pattern of vHIT abnormality. Patients were grouped as those with (Group-I, 24 patients) or without (Group-II, 10 patients) spontaneous nystagmus. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA test) was used to analyze the groups. Results Normal vHIT responses without refixation saccades but with lower gain were detected in 10 patients (29.4%). Fourteen patients (41%) showed abnormal vHIT results either in the form of normal or low VOR gain with refixation saccades. Six patients (42%) demonstrated dysfunction of both vestibular nerves. Of the 8 patients with unilateral refixation saccades, 2 patients (25%) had involvement of both vestibular nerve divisions, 2 patients had (25%), the superior vestibular nerve, and 4 patients (50%) had inferior vestibular nerve involvement. Conclusion Results suggest that the peripheral vestibular system is likely affected during migraine-associated vertigo. Re-fixation saccades were detected by vHIT in nearly half of the patients (42%). However, no specific pattern has been found. Inferior vestibular nerve involvement was more frequent.","PeriodicalId":43765,"journal":{"name":"Hearing Balance and Communication","volume":"7 1","pages":"155 - 161"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84474993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to determine the function of the saccule of the otolith organ in adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) using cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) and its independently associated demographic, clinical and laboratory variables. Method This case-control cross-sectional study included 60 patients (male = 15; female = 45) and 30 healthy adults. They underwent cVEMP. Results Patients had mean age of 30.63 ± 4.20 years and duration of illness of 14.68 ± 3.65 years. More than 50% had frequent diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), 30% had frequent hypoglycaemic attack, 35% had comorbid hyperlipidaemia, and 40% had peripheral neuropathy. Dizziness was reported in 30%. Compared to controls, 40% of patients had significantly delayed absolute latencies of P1 and N1 (p = 0.01) either unilateral or bilateral and 80% had reduced P1-N1 amplitudes (p = 0.001). Higher frequencies of abnormalities were present bilaterally. Asymmetry ratio (AR) was reported in 25%. Patients with longer duration of diabetes (>5 year), dizziness, HbA1c (>7%), frequent DKA or hypoglycaemic attacks and peripheral neuropathy had significantly prolonged P1 and N1 latencies and reduced P1-N1 amplitudes compared to those with shorter duration of diabetes, without dizziness, with HbA1c% ≤7%, low frequency of DKA hypoglycaemic attacks and those without peripheral neuropathy. Multiple regression analysis showed that presence of delayed P1 latencies and reduced P1-N1 amplitudes were significantly correlated with duration of diabetes > 5 years [OR = 3.60 (95%CI = 1.80–6.44), p = 0.01; OR = 4.56 (95%CI = 2.80–7.80), p = 0.01] and HbA1c levels >7% [OR = 5.26(95%CI = 3.83–8.05), p = 0.001; OR = 4.55(95%CI = 2.45–8.55), p = 0.001]. Conclusion The dysfunctions of the saccule of otolith organ and/or its pathway are prevalent in adults with T1D and correlated with duration and severity of diabetes. Therefore, optimal control of glycemic control is essential.","PeriodicalId":43765,"journal":{"name":"Hearing Balance and Communication","volume":"23 1","pages":"67 - 75"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80405100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Presbycusis is generally characterized by decreased auditory sensitivity, poor speech comprehension and decreased speech recognition in noisy environments. This disease is also associated with a decrease of more than 20% of a person’s maximum speech perception in the presence of a competitive signal compared to silence. The inability of the central auditory systems of elderly hearing aid users to decode sounds, especially in the presence of peripheral hearing loss, can affect hearing aid outcomes. This study investigates the correlation between assessments related to auditory processing and hearing aid outcomes. Method: This cross-sectional study was performed on 39 elderly hearing aid users in two groups: behind-the-ear (BTE; n = 23) and in-the-ear (n = 16) hearing aid users. After pure tone audiometry, patients who met the inclusion criteria underwent assessments related to the central auditory system, including double dichotic digit (DDT) and quick noise speech (Q-SIN) tests. Then, the correlation between the tests and hearing aid outcomes was evaluated based on the international outcome inventory (IOI-HA), a comprehensive assessment of the outcomes in different aspects. Results: In the BTE and in-the-canal (ITC) hearing aid users, there was a significant correlation between DDT scores in the right ear (r = 0.60, 0.52) left ear (r = 0.43, 0.54), speech-to-noise ratio (SNR) loss (r = −0.50, −0.58) and IOI-HA questionnaire scores respectively. The stepwise regression analysis results indicated that unlike other variables such as age or peripheral hearing loss, the Q-SIN was the only variable that significantly (p < 0.001) participated in IOI-HA prediction with a correlation coefficient of 0.504, which simulates the conditions most closely related to hearing aid inefficiency and patient dissatisfaction. Conclusions: The Q-SIN test could be used partially to predict the outcomes of hearing aid use.","PeriodicalId":43765,"journal":{"name":"Hearing Balance and Communication","volume":"50 1","pages":"201 - 209"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83510860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods Thirty adults who complained of LiD during their activities of daily living volunteered to participate. We conducted memory and attention assessments using auditory and visual tasks. Moreover, we evaluated the developmental characteristics of the participants psychologically using questionnaires for autism-spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Results The results of the auditory and verbal tasks were lower than that of visual tasks and that some participants showed lower scores on cognitive tests. Approximately 26.7% of the participants had ASD, whereas 16.7% had ADHD, and it showed a higher proportion of ASD or ADHD in participants with LiD. The outcomes of the cognitive and developmental assessment scores were not significantly correlated with the participants’ personal factors. Conclusion These findings imply that adults with LiD may also have cognitive problems and some of them showed developmental traits. It is needed to consider the cognitive and developmental characteristics of adults with LiD during evaluation in practice through hearing and listening tests along with cognitive assessments.","PeriodicalId":43765,"journal":{"name":"Hearing Balance and Communication","volume":"77 6 1","pages":"206 - 211"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85951872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method Forty subjects diagnosed with UVL within 7 days of onset and 30 subjects without dizziness/balance disorder complaints were included in the study as the unilateral vestibular loss and control groups (70 subjects aged 18–60 years [mean: 42.95 ± 10.82]). Bithermal caloric test, Fukuda, Babinski Weil, tandem walking, and past pointing tests were performed. The subjective VSR tests’ sensitivities were compared among the various methods. Results The Fukuda test was determined to have the highest sensitivity value (65%; kappa coefficient: 0.352). The sensitivity values of the other tests, in descending order, are: Babinski Weil (55%, Kappa coefficient: 0.274), tandem walking (10%, Kappa coefficient: 0.022), and past pointing (2.5%, Kappa coefficient: −0.014). A positive moderate correlation was obtained between canal paresis asymmetry and Fukuda deviation degree (p = 0.009, r = 0.407). There was no correlation between Babinski Weil (p = 0.619), tandem walking (p = 0.538), and past pointing test results and canal paresis asymmetry (p > 0.05). Conclusions Fukuda and Babinski Weil tests can be used under conditions where all subjective tests are not performed because of limited time. However, these tests must be used alongside objective vestibular test batteries owing to their limited specificity and sensitivity.","PeriodicalId":43765,"journal":{"name":"Hearing Balance and Communication","volume":"106 1","pages":"61 - 66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86967966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods Literature research in Medline and other database sources until August 2020. Results The total number of included studies was 39. Conclusion The lifetime prevalence of UVW in the general population is 0.2%; the respective incidence is unknown. UVW frequently overlaps with other diagnoses; nevertheless, there is usually a history of a single, preceding, monophasic event. The respective criteria include unsteadiness of more than two months, clinical exclusion of BPPV, and exclusion of Meniere’s disease, central lesion, or bilateral vestibular dysfunction, and more than 25% inter-aural asymmetry in the caloric test. The latter represents the golden testing standard in suspected patients, and should be complemented with vestibulo-ocular reflex assessment via rotation-testing and video head-impulse test. Posturography can be useful to evaluate postural stability. Questionnaire-based assessments may assess symptom severity, the ensuing disability, and the subjective perception of patients’ overall balance status. MRI is advised in vertiginous patients in the presence of neurologic signs and symptoms, risk factors for cerebrovascular disease, or progressive unilateral hearing loss. Vestibular rehabilitation is effective in patients with UVW, whilst pharmacological treatment is of limited value.","PeriodicalId":43765,"journal":{"name":"Hearing Balance and Communication","volume":"48 1","pages":"16 - 29"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78215727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method An e-survey was performed. A total of 31 questions were prepared for the survey. The survey questionnaire was circulated among 400 Audiologists. Out of 400 participants, 248 participants responded to the survey. Results Out of 248 participants, 111 participants reported performing vestibular testing. Most of the professionals worked in a corporate setup. Total patients with vestibular disorders reported to these setups ranged from 1-2 per month to 100–120 patients/month. Regarding the clinical tests, most participants reported performing the Romberg test, Fukuda stepping test, tests for cerebellar functioning and HINTS/HINTS plus in their setup for vestibular assessment and management. Regarding the barriers to vestibular assessment and management, most participants indicated that the lack of necessary training and experience to conduct vestibular assessment and management procedures was significant. Conclusions There is a lot of variability in assessment and management procedures among the professionals. There is a need to make uniform protocol across the country, and the vestibular assessment and management should be included as a separate course in their curriculum.","PeriodicalId":43765,"journal":{"name":"Hearing Balance and Communication","volume":"17 1","pages":"54 - 60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83387149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and methods In this study, the data related to 6144 newborns during two 18-month time periods before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine, was analyzed. Results From all visited newborns, 3770 and 2374 referred to the centre before and after the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine, respectively. There were statistically significant differences in the results of screening and the referral rate of neonates before and after the pandemic (p = 0.00). The results showed that both the residents of urban and rural regions visited for newborn hearing screening less frequently after the onset of the pandemic, but no statistically significant difference was shown between the number of boys and girls before and after the pandemic (p = 0.72). Conclusion Our results help gain new insights regarding the impacts of disruptive events such as pandemics on the implementation of health screening programs. Boosting public knowledge by providing families with proper education appears to be helpful in preventing the negative effects of delayed implementation of health screening programs.","PeriodicalId":43765,"journal":{"name":"Hearing Balance and Communication","volume":"57 1","pages":"76 - 81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90854631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study focuses on investigating of maternal drug intake during pregnancy in OAVS cases. Materials and methods Our sample was composed of 114 paediatric cases of OAVS. For each patient, an evaluation form seeking identity, medical history, pregnancy and family data, physical/dysmorphological findings and results from complementary tests was applied. Through the analysis of all the forms applied, the history of drug exposure/maternal diseases were retrospectively studied. Results The age of the population studied ranged between 1 month and 18 years, the majority being male. Regarding otological features, most had pinna involvement: microtia (86.6%); preauricular appendices (41.6%) and preauricular sinus (15.7%). External auditory canal atresia/stenosis was observed in 61.0% of the cases. Most had conductive hearing loss (75.5%) and imaging study revealed middle/inner ear malformations in 21.1% of the cases. Regarding nonotological characteristics, ophthalmological, osteoarticular and cardiac involvement were the 3 most frequently observed. Most cases had no evident cause for the development of anomalies (68.4%). However, in 16.7% a positive family history was identified. A history of drug intake has been elicited in 14.9% of the participants. The drugs intake during pregnancy found in our study were: isotretinoin, fluoxetine, oral contraceptives, levothyroxine, domperidone, enalapril, acyclovir and pseudoephedrine/triprolidine and gestational diabetes in need of treatment. Conclusion Some drugs are unquestionably associated with the development of malformation, such as isotretinoin, however, the other drugs cannot be underestimated, since their synergistic effect with other environmental agents and genetic background may be in the origin of OAVS.","PeriodicalId":43765,"journal":{"name":"Hearing Balance and Communication","volume":"62 1","pages":"47 - 53"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84981733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
