{"title":"A monument for an English Queen. The genealogical programme on the tomb of Philippa of Hainault (d. 1369) at Westminster Abbey, London","authors":"Sanne Frequin","doi":"10.21827/virtus.28.41-60","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21827/virtus.28.41-60","url":null,"abstract":"The tomb of Queen Philippa of Hainault (d. 1369) presents a genealogical programme consisting of thirty-two statues of weepers (pleurants), placed around the tomb. They represent family members of the deceased queen (both her own family and her family-in-law) and could be identified by the coats of arms below the pedestals on which they were placed. The original heraldry on the pedestals has been lost, but older drawings and descriptions allow a reconstruction of the identity of Philippa’s weepers. This genealogical programme has hitherto been interpreted as political propaganda for Philippa’s husband Edward III in the Hundred Years’ War and for his alleged claim (in his wife’s name) to the counties Hainault, Holland and Zeeland. Philippa’s own patronage of the tomb, the represented persons in the genealogical programme and the location of the tomb in Westminster Abbey suggest, however, an alternative reading. With her tomb, the queen shaped her own multifaceted memory, that of a queen consort, a guardian of dynastic continuity and of a descendant of the illustrious Hainault comital family.","PeriodicalId":437008,"journal":{"name":"Virtus | Journal of Nobility Studies","volume":"207 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124642805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During her marriage she was highly loyal to both, but the struggle for power which ensued after her husband’s death caused a shift in her dynastic loyalty. By supporting her only daughter Jacqueline of Bavaria’s right of succession she acted against the interests of the Burgundian dynasty, which in the end seized power over the three counties. This article discusses how material objects originating from different periods of her life reflected changes in how she perceived and expressed her dynastic identity, focussing on her seals and on memorial objects in her funeral chapel.","PeriodicalId":437008,"journal":{"name":"Virtus | Journal of Nobility Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126776505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using it as a starting point, the article investigates the way in which these elites expressed their real power and political ambitions in a similar manner. By comparing the Electors of Brandenburg and the houses of Radziwiłł, Wis´niowiecki and Sanguszko it shows that, first, Polonus Borussus did not exaggerate too much when he hinted at the ‘symbolic’ equality of the German electors and the Polish-Lithuanian princes; and second, that these elites differed from each other in two aspects: the primary audiences of their symbolic practices (peers in the case of the German princes as opposed to the middling nobility, the antagonist of the Polish-Lithuanian princes) as well as the potential to exploit symbols (the ‘symbolic audacity’ of the Polish-Lithuanian princes contrasting with the ‘confirmative’ use of the German princes).","PeriodicalId":437008,"journal":{"name":"Virtus | Journal of Nobility Studies","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127650771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The precarious economic position of the nobility after World War I, forced many to dispose of their costly ancestral estate in the course of the twentieth century. In this article, I explore the relationship between Natuurmonumenten and the nobility by looking at the acquisition history of the properties acquired by Natuurmonumenten. I particularly focus on two case studies, the estates of Hackfort and Eerde, which, after decades of negotiation and discussion, both became property of Natuurmonumenten in the early 1980s. These and other cases clearly demonstrate the vital importance of the board members’ personal networks for the acquisition of landed property. Nobles and nature conservationists – many of the board members of Natuurmonumenten were of noble birth themselves – both wanted to preserve landed estates. This mutual desire is still reflected in the management and preservation of estates and country houses owned by Natuurmonumenten today.","PeriodicalId":437008,"journal":{"name":"Virtus | Journal of Nobility Studies","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116465573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
