But their quest for unique spatiality in the Centre was often challenged by catastrophic ordeals that expatriates happened to undergo there. In this context, this paper argues that Hanif Kureishi as a Pakistani cinematographer with tangible experiences has been able to successfully depict the migrants’ quest of a new spatiality in ‘My Beautiful Launderette’ (1989). This literary analysis is qualitative in nature and it deploys theoretical interpretations of Mitchel Foucault and Henry Lefebvre to discover the nature of that spatiality. According to findings of the study, immigrants’ quest of spatiality with their geographical dislocation from the periphery to the Centre had been challenged by their fluctuation in between the native territory and the host locale. The dual existence amidst the migrant turbulence upsized multiple spatiality that immigrants have entrapped within varied trajectories of the ideological shift of Pakistani expatriates within the socio – cultural transition. The controversial socio-political upheavals under Margret Thatcher had not only undermined immigrants’ inclinations to find a unique identity and space with wealth accumulation and embracing western notions but greatly disturbed their fantasy of progress. Expatriates’ incapability to locate themselves in the center owing to prevalent racial polarizations had intensely traumatized their psychology to embrace traditional values. Similarly, such psychological dislocation can be ubiquitously relatable to the Sri Lankan sphere.","PeriodicalId":437005,"journal":{"name":"Sri Lanka Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122149116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, it has become very important to find the best models and learning platforms for online teaching and the problems students are facing in this process. And also checking the possibilities and students' perspectives on moving to an online system are important. Therefore, there is a need to research and find out whether these objectives are being met. The data were collected through an online survey and which covered the public and private universities in Sri Lanka, and the conclusion is based on the more than 900 responses received from undergraduates. The study discovered that university students most commonly use smartphones and laptops for online education and are connected to the Internet through smartphones via hotspots. The University Learning Management System (LMS) and Zoom also became popular learning platforms among them for conducting online lectures. The study also discovered that a high percentage of students liked to use these types of online learning in the future after the commencement of the university via the university LMS and Learn-Zoom free versions. But, the problem with access to the Internet due to the lack of internet coverage in certain areas is the main challenge they are faced with. However, the research advises that it is time to resolve the issues realized by the above findings for the benefit of future online learning and to carry out such educational activities without interruption.","PeriodicalId":437005,"journal":{"name":"Sri Lanka Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"436 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116012793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Children are the crucial group more prone to suffer from malnutrition than the other groups in the malnutrition circle. Identifying the different maternal factors affecting for child malnutrition is an important step in the process of reducing child malnutrition. The objective of this study is to accomplish a review of the empirical literature on maternal factors and child malnutrition by analyzing past empirical literature. The judgment sampling technique was utilized to select a sample of 40 research articles on the relationship between various factors and child malnutrition and the articles with the maternal factors were filtered and reviewed. Analyzing the data was achieved through the use of descriptive statistics and content analysis. The results found that more than 75% of journal articles reviewed have dis-cussed the maternal factors affecting child malnutrition. Mothers’ Education, Mothers’ Breastfeeding practice, Maternal Health, Age of Mother (the current age of mother and mother’s age at pregnancy), BMI of mother, Mothers’ Employability and Mass Media expose are the most important maternal factors related to child malnutrition. The finding of this study suggests the future researchers study the maternal factors and child malnutrition focusing on school children since they were paid less attention by the reviewed research studies. The results may be a guide for future researchers and scholars who are interesting in the issue and may inform the health sector where effective future intervention should be improved to overcome the incidence of child malnutrition.","PeriodicalId":437005,"journal":{"name":"Sri Lanka Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129505306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The quantitative data collected from 149 elders in both formal and informal sectors in the Matara District. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data and the Partial Least Square Structural Equation (PLS-SEM) model was employed to analyze data. Qualitative data were gathered having the face-to-face interviews with six elders and analyzed employing qualitative content analysis. The study revealed that formal social assistance had the highest positive impact on the social security of elders in the formal sector while it was not significant with the informal sector elders. However, formal social assistance was significant in both sectors under qualitative content analysis. Informal social assistance was evaluated using four major dimensions; social net-work, social connectedness, economic support during the emergency condition, health care support. Among these dimensions, social security during emergency conditions had significance in both sectors, and health care support positively significant in the formal sector. However, qualitative results confirmed that all these dimensions directly affect the increase of the social security of elders. Thus, it can be concluded that both formal and informal social assistance has an impact on the enhancement of the social security of elders in the formal sector while formal social assistance has not impacted the increase of social security of elders in the informal sector.","PeriodicalId":437005,"journal":{"name":"Sri Lanka Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"16 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124622822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of teacher talk can be considered a necessary as well as an unnecessary source in generating interactions. The study entitled ‘The effect of ESL Teacher Talk in creating classroom interaction’ has the objectives to portray the effect of ESL teacher talk in creating classroom interactions. This research employed an observation sheet, questionnaire and audio recording to reach the objectives. The categories of teacher talk existed in the classroom were discovered by using the observation sheet. Thereby, asking questions and lecturing were found as the dominant ones. The questionnaire was used to gain the students’ perceptions that supported the findings of the effects of teacher talk in which students perceived that the teacher indirectly asks many questions to involve them in the interactions. Thus, the study implies the idea that the teacher plays a major role in the classroom using the language to guide various types of functions as questioning, eliciting, explaining, giving feedback and instructions to generate inter-actions throughout the lesson. It is suggested that teachers should pay attention to their language in the process of interactions with the students to provoke more interactions in the classroom.","PeriodicalId":437005,"journal":{"name":"Sri Lanka Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116840414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Food manufacturers not only have limited ability to offer uniform quality but also a greater chance of generating wastes due to the perishable nature of materials. This study investigates the degree to which the Sri Lankan food sector is practicing lean manufacturing and examines the direct and indirect relationships between lean manufacturing, business performance, and operational performance. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to managers who have lean experience in the food industry. Using a sample of 86, the hypotheses were tested applying Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling with SmartPLS software. Developing a new construct to represent four lean manufacturing practices, namely, Just-in-time (JIT), Total Quality Management (TQM), Total Preventive Maintenance (TPM), and Human Resource Management (HRM), this study empirically confirms that lean manufacturing has a significant positive impact on both operational and business performance. Furthermore, operational performance partially mediates the relationship between lean manufacturing and business performance. The findings offer valuable implications for mangers, particularly in the food industry to achieve sustainability through practicing lean in their manufacturing and supply chain operations.","PeriodicalId":437005,"journal":{"name":"Sri Lanka Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126760050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among them one of the most precious is the Taj Mahal. Due to fewer threats to conservation, Taj is placed on the1996 watch list of the 100 most endangered sites by the World Monument Fund. In this study, an attempt was made to calculate the economic value of Taj Mahal in India in relation to the conservation issues. This study assesses households' WTP for Taj Mahal conservation through a CVM study. Single Bounded Dichotomous Choice with an open-ended format was used to elicit households’ willingness to pay from 200 households. Out of 200 sample respondents, 70.50 percent were found to be willing to pay the proposed bid prices for Taj Mahal conservation, whereas the remaining 29.50 percent rejected the proposed bid prices. Logit model was employed to assess the determinate of willingness to pay and probit model was also applied to estimate mean willingness to pay (WTP), and the study shows that the mean willingness to pay estimated from the Single Bounded Dichotomous Choice model was Rs. 109.92(US$1.50)per month per household. The results of the study have found the socioeconomic and demographic char-acteristics; awareness and attitude of the households are responsible for households WTP for Taj conservation. Therefore, policy and program intervention designed to address the issue of conserving the Taj Mahal in India needs to take into account these factors to make it more effective.","PeriodicalId":437005,"journal":{"name":"Sri Lanka Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133423065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it is essential to have unique re-searches for each country. Hence, this study aims to identify the relationship between public debt and economic growth in Sri Lanka using four decades' latest data. This was examined using econometrics techniques and annual time series data from 1980 to 2019 aiming to fulfill the objective of the effects of public debt on economic growth in Sri Lanka. The Jacque Bera (JB) and Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) tests are used to investigate the properties of the macroeconomic time series of normality and unit-roots re-spectively. The Engel-Ganger residual-based model used to investigate the long-run relationship between variables and the short-run relationship of variables investigated using the Error Correlation Model (ECM). The study shows that both public domestic debt and public external debt have expanded in Sri Lanka in the studying period. Further, public external debt became closer to the public domestic debt during that period. Public domestic debt, public external debt, and public debt servicing have a negative and significant relationship with economic growth. Domestic debt has a powerful adverse effect on economic growth in the long run with comparing external debt. Further, the negative effect of external debt is stronger than domestic debt on economic growth in the short run. This study recommends that the Sri Lankan government needs to have some limitations regarding the level of borrowing due to adverse effects on economic growth and effective usage of public debt is essential for Sri Lanka.","PeriodicalId":437005,"journal":{"name":"Sri Lanka Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities","volume":"139 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121618426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
