It achieves excellent performance especially on a network with high latency and high packet loss ratio. The interaction between TCP BBR and other TCP algorithms has not been discussed enough. In this paper, we focus on TCP BBR and CUBIC TCP, which is the most widely used algorithm in Linux operating system, and investigate the performance behaviors of TCP BBR and CUBIC TCP in a situation wherein these two TCP congestion control algorithms work concurrently. We then introduce three novel findings, which are extreme inter-protocol performance imbalance, intra-protocol performance balance, and cyclic performance switch. The first one means that the connections of a TCP algorithm consume almost all the bandwidth. The second one indicates that the performances of all the connections of a TCP algorithm increase and decrease as a group. The third one means that the extremely imbalanced performance switches periodically. We introduce a method for monitoring the parameters of TCP BBR and discuss the reason of and methods for relieving these features based on the monitored parameters. We postulate that difficulty of proving the bottleneck bandwidth and positive feedback mechanism on TCP BBR are important reasons. We assume that decreasing the buffer size of the bottleneck link can relieve these features.","PeriodicalId":436842,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"74 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114253340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

LL-MEC achieves coordinated resource programmability in end-to-end slicing scenarios by leveraging SDN towards an appropriate allocation of resources, thus drastically improving the performance of slices. We evaluate LL-MEC in three practical case studies, namely, (i) end-to-end mobile network slicing, (ii) RAN-aware video content optimization and (iii) IoT gateway, and show that it achieves a 2-4x lower user plane latency compared to LTE, while enabling low latency edge applications to operate on a per millisecond basis. Also, we highlight the benefits of RAN-aware applications in improving user Quality of Experience (QoE), showing a significant user latency reduction along with a much lower variability compared to legacy LTE. Last, a compatibility evaluation of LL-MEC over the OpenAirInterface real-time LTE platform demonstrates the scalability merits of LL-MEC due to the use of an OpenFlow Virtual Switch for the user plane function, rather than a Linux kernel in typical LTE setups.","PeriodicalId":436842,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123663381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this is greatly challenged by IP fragments. Since only the first fragment will keep complete layer-4 (L4) header during fragmentation, a firewall that is configured to let this packet through may drop all subsequent fragments due to missing L4 headers, causing policy violations. Also, the incomplete payload in fragments could reduce processing accuracy of NFs (e.g., intrusion detection system) To address these challenges, we present FragGuide, a transparent framework to assist NFs handling fragments correctly efficiently without requiring any modification to NFs. Our experiment results show that FragGuide can achieve 100% accuracy and zero invalid fragments for processing fragments in firewalls, and improve detection rate of IDS by 15.63% on average, while guaranteeing lower processing latency.","PeriodicalId":436842,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117243682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the wide adoption and deployment of delay-sensitive applications in the Cloud (e.g., gaming, interactive video conferencing, corporate services, etc.), monitoring and analysis of Cloud service latency is becoming increasingly relevant for Cloud service providers, tenants and even users. Traditional network monitoring approaches based on time-series analysis and thresholding are capable of raising alarms when anomalous events arise, but are not applicable to detect correlations among multiple monitored dimensions, necessary to provide an adequate interpretation of an anomaly. In this paper we present Hi-Clust, an unsupervised-based approach for analyzing and interpreting anomalies in multi-dimensional network data, through the application of hierarchical clustering techniques. While Hi-Clust is applicable to the analysis of different types of nested or hierarchically structured data, we particularly focus on the analysis of Cloud service latency, using active measurements collected from geographically distributed vantage points. We implement and benchmark multiple density-based clustering approaches for Hi-Clust over four weeks of real multidimensional Cloud service latency measurements. Using the most robust underlying clustering algorithm from the benchmark, we show how to automatically extract and interpret anomalous Cloud service behavior with Hi-Clust. In addition, we show the advantages of Hi-Clust over traditional threshold-based approaches for detecting and interpreting anomalous behavior, through practical examples over the collected measurements.","PeriodicalId":436842,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115482484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Compared with fixed capacity legacy network equipment, VNFs can be scaled in/out to adjust system capacity. However, hardware-based legacy network equipment is designed dedicatedly for its purpose so that it is more efficient in terms of unit cost. One challenge is to best use VNF resources and to balance the traffic between legacy network equipment and VNFs. To address this challenge, we first formulate the problem as a cost-performance tradeoff, where both VNF resource cost and system performance are quantified. Then, we propose an adaptive VNF scaling algorithm to balance the tradeoff. We derive the suitable VNF instances to handle data traffic with minimizing cost. Through extensive simulations, the adaptive algorithm is proven to provide good performance.","PeriodicalId":436842,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"234 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121229804","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, its highly virtualized environment is vulnerable to cyber attacks such as emerging Advanced Persistent Threats attack. In this paper, we propose a novel approach of cyber risk management for the fog computing platform. Particularly, we adopt the cyber-insurance as a tool for neutralizing cyber risks from fog computing platform. We consider a fog computing platform containing a group of fog nodes. The platform is composed of three main entities, i.e., the fog computing provider, attacker, and cyber-insurer. The fog computing provider dynamically optimizes the allocation of its defense computing resources to improve the security of the fog computing platform. Meanwhile, the attacker dynamically adjusts the allocation of its attack resources to improve the probability of successful attack. Additionally, to prevent from the potential loss due to attacks, the provider also makes a dynamic decision on the purchases ratio of cyber-insurance from the cyber-insurer for each fog node. Thereafter, the cyber-insurer accordingly determines the premium of cyber-insurance for each fog node. In our formulated dynamic Stackelberg game, the attacker and provider act as the followers, and the cyber-insurer acts as the leader. In the lower level, we formulate an evolutionary subgame to analyze the provider's defense and cyber-insurance subscription strategies as well as the attacker's attack strategy. In the upper level, the cyber-insurer optimizes its premium determination strategy, taking into account the evolutionary equilibrium at the lower-level evolutionary subgame. We analytically prove that the evolutionary equilibrium is unique and stable. Moreover, we provide a series of insightful analytical and numerical results on the equilibrium of the dynamic Stackelberg game.","PeriodicalId":436842,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128379021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

InP offers VNOs compensation for returning unused leased resources, with the objective of creating the mentioned pool of resources to allocate to new VNOs when resource requests arrive from them. Through this negotiation, InP avoids SLA violation penalty induced by arbitration and migration and VNOs receive compensations, thus both are financially benefitted. We numerically evaluate the improvement in the utilities for InP and VNOs provided by our proposed two strategies, which outperforms a conventional strategy.","PeriodicalId":436842,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121352486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we introduce a concept of an application switch that supports a network application based on programmable switches. A developer can optimize not only server computers but also network switches in order to improve application performance by implementing part of functions of the network application with an application switch. We then propose a method to apply an application switch for a database management system (DBMS) using TCP. The method migrates a TCP connection from a server computer to the application switch when the switch replies a query. The method reversely migrates it to the server computer again when a query is processed by the server. The application switch manages the TCP sequence number and the Ack number for these migrations. We constructed key-value store (KVS), which is one of DBMSs, using Cassandra and evaluated our method. Our evaluation showed that the proposed method improved the performance by 69% at most.","PeriodicalId":436842,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123739969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast, we have advocated a “participating fine-granular cloud computing platform” that a large number of personal or small company level resource suppliers participates in, configures and provides cloud computing, as an ultimately evolved form of cloud computing environment. When large-scale resources are requested by users in environments where small amount of resources are provided by many suppliers, appropriate resources for a large-scale request should be selected. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a resource search method for large-scale computing, in which resources that are close to each other are selected and used by each user to support quick computation and communication response, and low traffic load in the network.","PeriodicalId":436842,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 7th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116923249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
