A comparative performance evaluation of the combined ECN and BECN mechanism is carried out using both long-lived FTP flows and short-lived Web traffic. The simulation results show that the combined ECN+BECN mechanism benefits from BECN's early notification under heavy congestion and ECN's reliable delivery of congestion notification. It is observed that the ECN+BECN mechanism significantly reduces queue fluctuations due to early congestion indication compared to ECN. The loss of BECN Internet control message protocol (ICMP) source quenches on the reverse path does not adversely impact performance due to this combined approach. It is also shown that the ECN+BECN scheme can significantly reduce the ICMP source quench reverse traffic in a network compared to a BECN only network. Experiments with Web traffic workloads show measurable improvement in both average object transfer delay and fairness over ECN.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. Classification of objects moving through the sensor field is an important application that requires collaborative signal processing (CSP) between nodes. Given the limited resources of nodes, a key constraint is to exchange the least amount of information between them to achieve desired performance. Two main forms of CSP are possible. Data fusion-exchange of low-dimensional feature vectors - is needed between correlated nodes. Decision fusion exchange of local likelihood values - is sufficient between independent nodes. Decision fusion is generally preferable due to its lower communication burden. We study CSP classification algorithms based on a Gaussian model for sensor measurements that provides a simple abstraction of node correlation and yields a simple characterization of the optimal maximum likelihood classifier. Two extreme sub-optimal classifiers are also considered: a data-averaging classifier that treats all measurements as correlated, and a decision-fusion classifier that treats them all as independent. Analytical and numerical results based on real data are provided to compare the performance of the three CSP classifiers. Our results indicate that the sub-optimal decision fusion classifier, that is most attractive in the context of sensor networks, is also a robust choice from a decision theoretic viewpoint.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. We consider the case where the communication channel consists of one or more partial-processing satellite links. The satellite on-board processor can demodulate, repacketize and remodulate the incoming data prior to transmission. We model the system by a cascade of binary symmetric channels followed by an additive white Gaussian noise channel. We investigate the performance of a turbo-code with two 16-state component codes and convolutional codes for this application through simulation. The interleaver design for turbo-codes is essential and we consider dithered relative prime interleavers, which have excellent flare performance.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. The problem is mainly due to the low signal power which forces the acquisition system to process the signal over long periods of time before getting a reliable estimate of the timing of the signal. Hence there is a need to develop more efficient acquisition schemes by taking into account the signal and channel characteristics. In this paper, we investigate a single-user acquisition scheme which collects the energy in the multipaths by performing equal gain combining (EGC) to improve the acquisition performance. We define the hit set as the set of hypothesized phases which can guarantee adequate system performance after acquisition and also study the effect of the EGC window length on the acquisition performance.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. The technique we propose in this paper is inspired by the \"integrate-and-fire\" model applied the analysis of many biological swarms. This technique, which we call opportunistic large arrays (OLA), allows to efficiently flood a wireless network with information and, at the same time, permits to transmit reliably to far destinations that the individual nodes are not able to reach (the reachback problem). The idea is that the leader will ignite an avalanche of signals from the other nodes and the resulting distributed activity will constitute specific patterns embedding information from the leader and the nodes themselves. An adaptive receiver that acquires the resulting pattern, will be used to extract the information produced. We show, through numerical simulations, that in broadcasting applications our system gains in both energy-savings and broadcasting delay.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. In some techniques, signal amplitude is used as the measure of signal quality, but this is not as good a measure as the signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio (SNIR). In this work we investigate several SNIR estimators based upon correlator outputs, and show by simulation that they are both accurate in terms of estimating bit error probability, and rapid in that only several tens of bits are required. We also derive the SNIR probability density function for the equal-received-energy case and validate it by computer simulations.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. These CPM waveforms provide higher throughput than the standard, ubiquitous 16 kbps FSK waveform and this paper documents the performance of the combination of the two military standards as used in a tactical SATCOM radio (AN/PRC-117F). In addition, the uncoded CPM waveforms Mil-Std-188-181B also provide optional interleaving and Reed-Solomon outer codes which can be added to considerably enhance BER performance. This paper also documents the bit error rate performance of all of the Reed-Solomon coded waveforms in the tactical SATCOM radio. Unfortunately the improvement in bit error rate does not correspond to an equivalent improvement in data throughput. For example, since the Mil-Std-188-184 network layer provides an external \"keyline\" to a radio, the radio is required to wait until an interleaver is completely filled before transmitting an encoded set of data. This holdoff time also results in an equivalent wait time at the receiver while the entire codeword and interleaver block is demodulated and decoded at the receiver. The 184-capable receiver must wait for this end-to-end hold off time before it can respond with an ACK/NACK to the transmitter. This round-trip holdoff time consequently reduces the ultimate throughput of the message. This paper provides an analysis of this weakness in the strict layering (network/physical) approach to data throughput and provides recommendations for modifications to the Mil-Std-188-184 and HPW waveforms.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. For spread-spectrum systems such as a direct-sequence spread-spectrum packet communication, the preamble consists of a short period of known code sequence and the code sequence continues until the end of the packet, i.e., the information that may be useful for the acquisition continues even after the preamble period for spreading of message symbols. In this work, for direct-sequence packet communications we. propose a technique to enhance the performance of a packet acquisition system which uses not only the preamble but also the message payloads that follow the preamble. The proposed method is a tradeoff between the accuracy in the declaration of acquisition and receiver complexity. Using the proposed method we improve the probability of acquiring packets that leads to an increase in the throughput of the packet system, which is defined as the average number of successful packets given the offered traffic.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. The technique is based on the probability density function (pdf ) of the SNR estimator and can be implemented using a standard off-the-shelf turbo decoder. For comparison purposes we evaluate the performance of a hard eraser algorithm and a receiver with perfect knowledge of channel parameters. Results indicate that a hard eraser method yields almost optimal results under strong jamming conditions while collapsing in weak jamming conditions. Our robust soft decision metric generation technique facilitates operation under both strong and weak jamming conditions and approaches the performance of a receiver with perfect knowledge of channel parameters by 1.5 dB.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003.
