However, it has been perceived to be too fragile for use in networks with non-negligible packet loss rates. In this paper, we present a novel token management approach that quickly recovers from common token loss and duplication scenarios, and that deals efficiently with changes in network connectivity and membership. This token management scheme was developed for use in military high frequency radio networks, and may also be appropriate for other networks that experience significant packet loss rates and relatively long link turnaround times.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. The new IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless access system is a viable alternative that can meet such requirements. In addition, this network can be swiftly deployed to interconnect the military theater, emergency response, and disaster relief operations to the backbone. Due to the diverse multimedia traffic with different priorities and QoS requirements, it is a well know fact that it is imperative to provide QoS support in military networks. However, the IEEE 802.16 provides only signaling mechanisms, but does not specify any scheduling or admission control algorithms that ultimately provide QoS support. In this paper we introduce a new scheduling algorithm for IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless access standard. The proposed solution which is practical and compatible to the IEEE 802.16 standard, provides QoS support to different traffic classes. To the best of our knowledge this is the first such algorithm. The simulation studies show that the proposed solution includes QoS support for all types of traffic classes as defined by the standard. We have shown the relationship between traffic characteristics and its QoS requirements and the network performance. This study will help network architects to decide the system parameters as well as the kind of traffic characteristics for which the network can provide QoS support.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. Based on a recently developed communication-theoretic framework, in which the interaction between the medium access control (MAC) layer and the physical layer is taken into account, we investigate the performance of circuit switched ad hoc wireless networks. Upon the introduction of the concept of effective transport capacity, which represents the \"actual\" rate-distance product carried by the network and the maximum of which is the transport capacity of the network, an intuitive and simple approach for the evaluation of this quantity is proposed. In particular, two MAC protocols are considered: Aloha and perroute carrier sense multiple access (PR-CSMA). Numerical results indicate that for low values of the network traffic load the effective transport capacity achievable with Aloha is almost equal to that obtained in the ideal case without internode interference (INI). We also show the existence of a threshold value of the traffic load below which Aloha outperforms PR-CSMA, and above which the opposite is true.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. This paper investigates impulse detection in receivers that can have either a single antenna or an antenna array. The proposed detector uses either a backward or forward outlier search strategy and assumes zero mean signals and spatially and temporally white background noise. Signal need not to be weak, i.e., signal-to-noise ratio may be large and the methods still works. The backward method uses all the data in an initial step whereas the forward method uses smaller, (hopefully) clean set in an initial step. The forward method is expected to perform better. Simulations confirm this expectation. Indeed, the used forward method can detect outliers even if their contamination exceeds 90% of all the samples.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. However, it shows considerable noise enhancement effect in the process of solving the de-correlating matrix (DM) equation. A new DD is proposed whose DM consists of pilot response itself. Additional techniques such as using spreading sequences with guards and inserting dummy pilot responses into DM are adopted. This DD indicates a function that significantly reduces the noise amplification, resulting in remarkable performance improvement.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. The study offers a better understanding on the future routing protocol design for ad-hoc networks. By using unidirectional links in addition to bidirectional links, the routing performance will improve greatly. To accurately evaluate the use of unidirectional links, both unidirectional and bidirectional links in the random graph and the Euclidean graph approaches are investigated. The random graph approach, where node connection and link direction are the only concerns, serves as a theoretical benchmark for the study. The Euclidean graph approach, where the dynamics of the wireless network are captured, examines the ability of the networks to transmit messages to most, if not all, of the nodes within a small number of hops on the provision of the minimal network connectivity. The simulation results show the presence of a significant proportion of unidirectional links and the improvement of network performance by increasing network connectivity and reducing path length.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. We incorporate a realistic channel model to study the impact of the changes in the physical layer on the performance of a scheduling protocol at the data link layer, and consider imperfect estimation of the channel conditions, based upon which the scheduling decision is made. We present our analysis results as well as comparisons with other wireless scheduling protocols. Simple bit error rate (BER) approximations are derived as functions of the signal and jammer fading parameters (which need not be equal) using the assumption that average jammer power is much greater than average signal power. The approximations are used to find the worst case jammer fractional bandwidth. For signals with Rayleigh or more severe fading, full-band jamming is the optimal attack. In less severe signal fading, partial-band jamming may be more disruptive, depending on the available jammer power. It is found that jammer fading improves communications channel performance with wideband jamming by 2-4 dB effective power gain. When jammer bandwidth is optimized, BER performance is dominated by the signal fading parameter, although the optimal jammer bandwidth will vary somewhat due to jammer fading. The accuracy of these approximations is verified by comparing them to more detailed numerical solutions.","PeriodicalId":435910,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Military Communications Conference, 2003. We argue why SCTP is better suited for file transfers in a network prone to resource failures. To measure performance, we implemented FTP over SCTP in a FreeBSD environment.
