Previously, two types of decorrelators have been proposed: a high-rate decorrelator (HRD), and a low-rate decorrelator (LRD). It has been observed that the LRD provides better performance than the HRD for all users at the expense of higher complexity and longer demodulation delay for high-rate users. To improve the performance and reduce the demodulation delay, a decorrelating decision feedback detector (DF) has been proposed. Although the DF has less complexity than that of the LRD, the complexity of DF is still high. This paper presents a blind adaptive decorrelating decision-feedback detector (BADF) which uses a bootstrap algorithm to decrease the complexity of DF and eliminates the singular-matrix problem of the decorrelator.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). The proposed initialization approach is on the basis of minimizing the mean residual interference power at each stage of cancellation and involves a calculation of the Q-function. To reduce its computational complexity, a table look-up approach is presented to simplify the design. Computer simulations show that the proposed initialization method makes the adaptive multistage PIC scheme converge much faster than the original scheme with fixed initialization, which in turn reduces the number of iterations required per stage.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). The modified frequency-sampling filter (FSF) provides an effective filter bank for splitting a signal into equally spaced frequency channels. The center clipper with optimized voice-activity detector and inverse room transfer function (RTF) is employed at each frequency bin. The nonlinear center-clipping operation is analyzed in theory using a sinusoidal signal and Fourier transform. The results show that the clipper generates odd harmonics and may be reduced by a simple low-pass filter. Computer simulations using real speech and measured RTF show that reverberation effects are suppressed successfully with no obvious distortions.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). A differential space-time modulation (DSTM) scheme was recently proposed to perform demodulation without channel state information, which is attractive in fast fading channels where accurate channel estimates are difficult to obtain. More recently, a differential space-code modulation (DSCM) scheme, which is an improvement of DSTM for combating interference (including intentional and unintentional jamming) signals, was proposed. DSCM significantly outperforms DSTM when interference is present. This advantage, however, is achieved at the cost of a lower transmission rate, a wider bandwidth, or a combination of both. To alleviate this problem, we extend DSCM to a so-called high-rate DSCM (HR-DSCM) scheme, which increases the data rate considerably at the cost of a slightly higher bit error rate, while still maintaining the interference suppression capability.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). One such popular training-based spatial multiplexing technique is the Vertical Bell Labs Layered Space Time Architecture (V-BLAST). The common practice in the literature is to assume that the channel remains constant over some time interval, whose duration is proportional to the coherence time of the channel. This is not often true since the channel is continuously varying, although the variation is slow in some cases. For our analysis, the channel coefficients are modeled as a first-order autoregressive process. We then show that even in slow fading channels, the performance losses are considerable. One surprising and rather non-intuitive result is that the performance losses are higher at higher average signal-to-noise ratios. We have simulated V-BLAST with such a channel model to confirm the validity of our analysis.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). We aim at resolving the inconvenience of using a head-mounted/hand-holding microphone in a conventional speech recognizer. To improve the distant speech quality, a linear microphone array is applied and acts as a robust acquisition system. We develop a time-domain coherence measure (TDCM) to precisely detect the time delay of speech signals collected by different microphones. The estimated delay is adopted in a delay-and-sum beamformer for speech enhancement. Further, we adapt the speech hidden Markov models to get close to the acoustic condition of enhanced test speech for robust speech recognition. In acquisition and recognition experiments on connected Chinese digits, we find that TDCM can estimate the time delay as precisely as that calculated assuming the speech source direction is known. Increase of speech sampling rate is helpful to determine time delay. Also, the incorporation of the model adaptation scheme can significantly reduce the recognition errors with moderate computation overhead.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). Although the programming model which FPGA typically present to application developers is prohibitively low level, they are good target devices for rapid prototyping. The purpose of this paper is to present a novel bit-serial structure dedicated to inverse discrete wavelet transforms based on time-interleaved FIR filters. To overcome the problem of wait cycles within the structure, a second line of bit adders is provided. This allows the structure to use additional \"dummy\" cycles to deal with additional bits. The proposed structure is modular and scalable, which allows a bit-level parameterisation. To assess the effectiveness of the approach the design has been implemented efficiently on the Xilinx 4000 series FPGA.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01).
