Because the statistics of MAI and ISI are unavailable for multipath fading channels, the estimations of the MAI and ISI, especially in the earlier stages, contain significant errors. A poor estimation of MAI and ISI due to the relatively high decision bit error rate (BER) may lead to a poor cancellation or even a higher BER at the following decision stages. The H/spl infin/ filtering approach is a robust optimization from the minimax point of view, and it tends to be more effective even in the case that the co-channel interference (CCI) statistics are less valid. It minimizes the effect of the worst disturbance (including co-channel interference and additive noise). Computer simulation demonstrates that a better transmission performance can be achieved by using the H/sub /spl infin// filtering algorithm at the initial stage of PIC.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). {"title":"Joint estimation of the DOA and delay based on the TST-ESPRIT in a wireless channel","authors":"Yung-Yi Wang, Jiunn-Tsair Chen, Wen-Hsien Fang","doi":"10.1109/SPAWC.2001.923909","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/SPAWC.2001.923909","url":null,"abstract":"This paper presents a one-dimensional (1D) estimation of signal parameter via rotational invariance technique (ESPRIT)-based approach, TST-ESPRIT, for jointly estimating the directions of arrival (DOAs) and the propagation delays in a wireless multiray channel. The DOAs and the propagation delays are estimated by the spatial-ESPRIT (S-ESPRIT) and by the temporal-ESPRIT (T-ESPRIT), respectively. Based on the spatial-temporal characteristics of the multiray channel, the proposed approach in a tree structure combines the temporal filtering technique and the spatial beamforming technique along with two T-ESPRITs and one S-ESPRIT. The incoming rays are thus grouped, isolated, and then estimated. At the same time, the pairing of the estimated DOAs and delays are automatically determined. Compared with previous works, the TST-ESPRIT can provide better performance with substantially reduced computational complexity. Some simulations are furnished to justify the proposed algorithm.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). The development environment is a real-time PC-based platform that allows testing to be done in a simple manner using the main software functionality of a PC. The front-end of the transceiver implemented in hardware represents a wideband design that functionally converts wireless signals directly into a gigasample digital data stream in the receiver (and vice versa in the transmitter). This direct conversion approach shows the greatest promise in realizing the \"holy grail\" of software radio.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). The system adopts CDMA/FDD/16QAM to increase spectral efficiency. In the proposed system, all subscribers attain an error-free condition by power control in the presence of inter-cell interference. The number of subscribers per sector is equal to process gain. Bit rate per subscriber is a multiple of 5 Mbit/s and maximum 20 Mbit/s. We estimate BER performance for the uplink in the presence of synchronizing error such as carrier frequency error and timing error among subscribers in a sector because the errors reduce orthogonality of codes. Simulated BER performance shows that all subscribers in a sector have to have a normalized carrier frequency error of 2% and a normalized timing error of 3% to keep the orthogonality of the codes for the uplink. The feasibility of the synchronization is discussed.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). A soft-in soft-out (SISO) multiuser detection architecture based on a cross-entropy minimization technique has been developed. Minimum cross entropy is an optimal lossless decoding algorithm but its complexity limits its practical implementation. Hence, the algorithm is implemented analogous to turbo decoding. The proposed architecture uses a conventional CDMA system followed by two cascaded logarithm maximum a posterior (log-MAP) SISO decoders. Channel information is fed into the SISO decoder, which generate the L-values and processing proceeds on an iterative manner similar to the decoding of the turbo codes. The cross-entropy minimization provides a stop criterion for the multiuser detection to prevent any unnecessary iteration when no further improvement is possible.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). Software radio, however, requires not only powerful transceiver architectures, but also efficient digital signal processing algorithms. A method to design and implement a very efficient decimation filter for a sigma-delta converter is proposed. The main idea of this article is to free the positions of the zeros of the classical decimation sinc-filter so to attain a high selective frequency behaviour. The filtering stage is realized by a classical sinc-filter cascaded with two other filters obtained from the first one by rotating its zeros by two opposite angles. The whole cascade yields to a simple recursive structure with a frequency behaviour more selective than a sinc-filter around the noise fold frequency bands. Although the design method may be extended to a multistage implementation, the filter design proposed deals with the first filtering stage. Since the designed filter eliminates the most part of the quantization noise, the following filtering stages may be designed with relaxed specifications adopting classical filter design methods.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). The channel is highly dispersive at high data rates causing a severe intersymbol interference (ISI) effect and making the direct application of any trellis-based equalization algorithm infeasible. The problem of reducing the excess interference is solved by receiver diversity combining, i.e., using a linear antenna array and a broadband beamformer in the receiver. The beamformer output that contains less ISI is viewed as the output of a serial concatenated coding system and optimum symbol detection is achieved by an iterative equalization and decoding scheme. The proposed receiver structure is simulated for two-dimensional TCM signals such as 8-16 PSK and 16-QAM and the results indicate an improved performance of the diversity receiver.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). In particular, scalable coding is desirable for a heterogeneous network with varied bandwidths. We propose a scalable embedded zero tree wavelet packet (scalable EZWP) audio coding system that is a scalable audio compression system using wavelet packet decomposition and embedded zero-tree coding. We focus on multilayer low-bitrate coding which delivers high perceptual quality. In the base layer, the overlapped audio segment is first transformed by the wavelet packet. Then the local significant coefficients are extracted, quantized, and coded by variable length coding. In the enhancement layer and the full band layer, the residual signal that is the difference between the original and the output of the previous layer is coded via EZW with a psychoacoustic model and arithmetic coding. The target bit rates for three layers are 16, 32, and 64 Kbit/s, respectively. The performance of the proposed coding system is only slightly inferior to MPEG-1 layer 3 at 64 Kbit/s while it provides bitrate scalability that is suitable for multimedia distribution over the Internet with heterogeneous networks.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01). Many algorithms such as power control, channel allocation, and handoff, etc., require a fast and accurate SIR measurement. In practice, however, the SIR estimation needs a lot of computations. The major challenge for the SIR estimation issue is to find an efficient way to separate the desired signal with interference. We investigate the performance of the SIR estimation techniques for the DS-CDMA cellular system in a time-dispersive (or a frequency-selective) fading channel. The major contribution is to provide a framework incorporating the effect of channel dispersions into the SIR estimator for the CDMA systems. We present new results on the quantitative performance of two easily implemented SIR estimation techniques, taking into account the impact of frequency-selective fading, mobility, different number of interferers, and different initial transmission power levels.","PeriodicalId":435867,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Third Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC'01).
