However, the low permeability of a traditional vapor retarder can be a severe drawback concerning the drying potential of the assembly in summer time. Because moisture is more harmful to the structure when temperatures are high, the evaporation of moisture from the assembly must be as effective as possible. Flexible vapor control means that the retarder is tight enough to avoid critical condensation in winter while being sufficiently vapor permeable in summer to guarantee a fast drying process by adapting its performance to the seasonal changes in environmental conditions. Therefore, a valida tion experiment on four types of flat roofs has been set up at the laboratory. All rele vant material properties of the individual material layers were determined before hand. During the experiment, temperatures, heat fluxes and moisture contents were measured. The measured data were then compared with numerical simulation results. The research was prompted by a BOCA1 model code change requiring that the interface between dissimilar materials be tested to demonstrate that the details resist water pene tration into wall assemblies. The objective of the research was twofold: (1) to satisfy the BOCA requirements, and (2) to examine the effectiveness of source drainage as a method of water management. The experimental simulations in volved much more severe conditions than the BOCA requirements to assess source drainage. The research evaluated a number of construction details for rain penetration resistance under static pressure differences up to 1 kPa (20.9 psf) and dynamic pressure variations at wind speeds up to 33.5 m/s (121 km/h) (75 mph). The re sults show that traditional techniques based on source drainage, such as window flashing, are effective as a means for managing water at the window/wall junc tions of the EIFS cladding systems. The notion of the thermal structure factors of a wall is introduced. Correlation between the fre quency dependent and structure dependent thermal characteristics is analyzed for the representative sets of building walls and roofs from ASHRAE Handbook 1989: Fundamentals.
