These substations either step down or step up voltages from one level to another, or maintain the same level of voltage for interconnections. Substations that operate at medium to high voltage levels have critical components such as transformers, circuit breakers, protection relays, DC batteries among others, that require regular monitoring and analysis for maintenance operations. These components also detect potential anomalies that could lead to unplanned outages and system failure. In this paper, we present an automated monitoring system that enables authorized substation operators to remotely access and receive critical substation information on trips and alarms necessary for rapid maintenance response and intervention of faults. At the crux of the monitoring system is a hardware controller system which has a microcontroller, relays, and shift registers, for acquiring and processing signals from the transformer control panel at the substation. The controller system, which also functions as a data logger, communicates the substation data to a cloud server using the GSM/GPRS (Global Service Mobile/General Packet Radio Service) communication protocol. A user interface system on a mobile device interacts and access prevailing conditions at the substation from the controller system through the server system. A prototype of the substation monitoring system design was implemented and tested through numerical simulation and field tests at a 33/11kV substation of the ECG (Electricity Company of Ghana). The results show that authorized substation operators are able to remotely monitor and receive in real-time, critical substation information such as alarms, trips, warnings, and the winding loads on transformers necessary to facilitate rapid maintenance to avoid system failures and shut-down.","PeriodicalId":434382,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 8th International Conference on Adaptive Science and Technology (ICAST)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132049554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The development of PLS has mainly based on phased-array (PA) antennas which achieves angle dependent communication security. In this paper, we investigate secure communication solution using a new array antenna, namely frequency diverse array (FDA) which achieves angle-range dependent as a result of small frequency increment. Specifically, we design a single FDA transmitter and half duplex receiver by exploring artificial noise (AN) technique for secure transmission of information in the presence of eavesdropper over Nakagami-m fading channel. Further, considering passive eavesdropping case, secrecy outage probability (SoP) and average secrecy capacity (ASC) are devised. An analyses of the simulation examples show that SoP decreases as fading parameter mD is large. Interestingly, an increased in mD correspondingly increased ASC while enjoying range-angle dependency.","PeriodicalId":434382,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 8th International Conference on Adaptive Science and Technology (ICAST)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123774812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There has been a drastic increase in the amount of waste being produced in Ghana and the world as a whole. Sources of waste vary and it may include: domestic, commercial, industrial, and agricultural. Unmanaged waste can have many negative effects on our environment and the human resources of the country. A lot of waste management companies have systems put in place to help with the management of waste in our society. Some of these existing systems require improvement in order to monitor waste. Moreover, revenue collection and management are still a challenge for waste management companies. In most cases, agents go around to manually collect revenue. In order to offer solutions to these challenges, we developed an Internet of Things (IoT) based system to offer complete monitoring and revenue management. Our system can monitor waste being dumped into it using ultrasonic sensors to measure waste levels and automatically transmit the information that has been captured to a server via a wireless mobile network connection. This information can be accessed by administrators via a web and an Android mobile application. The Android mobile application allows users and collectors to access information of waste levels in bins and also a revenue collection system that will allow users to make payments via mobile money. All activities and information generated from the mobile application are then passed on to a database server which can be accessed by the administrator via a web application. Our system will improve waste monitoring and revenue management since most of the manual processes have been automated.","PeriodicalId":434382,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 8th International Conference on Adaptive Science and Technology (ICAST)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134533065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
