In this case, the vehicles receiving the message should detect whether or not they are in the backward direction from the witness vehicle. A typical direction detection technique requires floating-point calculations because it depends on the Trigonometrical Function. However, since the floating-point calculation is not supported in Kernel layer of Linux OS. This paper proposes a sector-based backward direction detection technique which utilizes integer calculation. We implemented our proposed technique on an embedded Linux OS, called SnapGear, and showed that it has a negligible detection error.","PeriodicalId":434322,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conference on Ubiquitous and Future Networks (ICUFN)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115300577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose an architectural model of service overlay networking platform for future user-centric networking. Our platform composes a dynamic service overlay network for P2P service user using DSON(Dynamic Service Overlay Network). The composed services for a user enhance its abilities and capabilities more than common service network. So this mechanism improves the efficiency of transport network and QoS sensitive services such as IPTV, A/V conferencing, VoIP and so on.","PeriodicalId":434322,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conference on Ubiquitous and Future Networks (ICUFN)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125066855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first scheme can operate without any feedback from the coordinator of the group, and therefore it utilizes a shorter time slot than does the second scheme. However, the second scheme can provide a stable slope of the joining delay, while the delay of the first scheme is rapidly increased when the number of the required robots approaches the number of the neighboring robots. We extensively analyze and evaluate these two schemes in terms of their joining delays, and then we derive the criteria for combining them for exploiting their opposite characteristics.","PeriodicalId":434322,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conference on Ubiquitous and Future Networks (ICUFN)","volume":"209 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123296160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even if directional MAC has benefits such as spatial reuse and thus increased throughput, it has significant problems that have not been effectively rectified including hidden terminal and deafness problems. To tackle the hidden terminal and deafness problems, we propose a new D-MAC protocol that uses circular RTS (CRTS) and circular CTS (CCTS). We evaluate the performance of our protocol using ns-2 simulator. Performance evaluation shows that our proposed D-MAC protocol can reach up to 800% throughput gain with scenario 2 (24 nodes) against scenario 1 (3 nodes).","PeriodicalId":434322,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conference on Ubiquitous and Future Networks (ICUFN)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123883819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed system monitors a whole room with only a pair of transmitter and receiver. Using an antenna array at the receiver, we can get not only received signal strength (RSS) that is susceptible to noise but also eigenvector spanning signal subspace that is inherent to its environment. When an event (e.g. intrusion) occurs, the propagation environment changes, and thus the eigenvector changes. Based on the change of eigenvector, we detect an event. We explain our proposed system and show some experimental results.","PeriodicalId":434322,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conference on Ubiquitous and Future Networks (ICUFN)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121537245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We address differential pricing as a network management tool, i.e., what to charge, how to charge, and how much to charge. We also outline research towards multi-platform two-sided pricing focusing on ISP that charges both content and application providers. Open problems are highlghted. As a next step, through collaboration we will combine the access to large-scale empirical data with rigorous modeling and analysis; we will go all the way from data collection through mathematical analysis to practical impact on policy decisions and ISP business decisions, thus closing the loop in the study of network economics for universal broadband coverage.","PeriodicalId":434322,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conference on Ubiquitous and Future Networks (ICUFN)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121559832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Atop the list of such applications is smart grid infrastructure. Other applications include meteorological applications, such as monitoring of weather, pollution, and allergy conditions. These applications are characterized by the existence of a large number of small Internet Protocol (IP) devices sending small packets at a low rate to the same server. Even though individual data rates are low, aggregation of these rates produce a significant amount of traffic that can disrupt the communication function of other applications. Because individual devices produce data at a low rate, the transmission control protocol's (TCP) congestion control mechanism is rendered ineffective, thereby causing (i) excessive retransmission of packets; and (ii) degrading the throughput of other competing applications. To address the above problems, we introduce the concept of aggregation at the communication transport level. A TCP aggregator node is added between the data sources and the central server. It splits the TCP connections between the sources (e.g., smart meters) and the data collection server. The aggregator collects data from the individual sources and reliably forwards the data to the collection server. The new strategy provides better response to traffic conditions and, most importantly, makes congestion control and flow control useful. Through extensive NS-2 simulations, we show the effectiveness of the TCP aggregator approach to mitigating the problems in terms of the throughput and packet drop rate performance metrics.","PeriodicalId":434322,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conference on Ubiquitous and Future Networks (ICUFN)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115096283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Basically, each node in the Internet is assigned a set of coordinates and the network distances such as round trip time can be estimated by the Euclidean distances among the nodes. The accuracy of the Euclidean coordinate systems is usually measured with various performance metrics such as relative errors. It is well known that the estimation has intrinsic errors due to the triangle inequality violations among the network distances. Since there have been abundant analysis on the accuracy of the direct distance estimation, i.e., the network distance between two nodes, in this paper, we turn our focus to the path length estimation. Basically, for an overlay path with multiple links, the path length is the sum of the distances of the links along the path. Accurate path length estimation can be exploited for many path selection problems in the peer to peer systems. For example, selecting one hop relay node can be easily implemented via the Euclidean coordinate systems. In this paper, we present a rigorous mathematical analysis on the estimation accuracy especially of the path lengths. We consider the errors as random variables and show that the path length estimation is much more accurate than the direct distance estimation through a rigorous statistical analysis. We also provide simulation results that conform to the mathematical analysis.","PeriodicalId":434322,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conference on Ubiquitous and Future Networks (ICUFN)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129924602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When different users with different priorities use the same network resource, utilization of the resource according to the priority is important. This idea, along with multi-color optical channels can be used in the promising communication technology, visible light communication (VLC), an encouraging green and energy-efficient communication technology. In this paper, we support priority-based resource allocation and show that priority schemes have better performances than non-priority schemes. Numerical results show that, with the proposed system, we can reduce the blocking probability and improve the system performance.","PeriodicalId":434322,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conference on Ubiquitous and Future Networks (ICUFN)","volume":"223 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122356365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With such paradigm in sight, we propose a framework for medium access control (MAC) protocols meant for exploiting the underlying centralized scheduling opportunity. A coordinator takes on the role of marshaling the wireless resources in its piconet; in a collision-free scheme, it schedules the time slots for each superframe based on the Quality-of-Service (QoS) specifications of nodes with additional provision for channel access for rare yet critical emergency data. In a preliminary study, we show the impact of some system parameters specific to this framework on delay incurred and energy absorbed in the network.","PeriodicalId":434322,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conference on Ubiquitous and Future Networks (ICUFN)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130520033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
