A microwave based NDT method has been developed to detect and evaluate atmospheric corrosion under paint. The results are promising, the measurement sensitivity and resolution of microwave NDT can be significantly improved with known the lift-off (air layer) in the corrosion detection applications. The aim of this investigation was achieved by using electromagnetic computer simulation technology (CST 2012) describing the interaction of microwave signals radiated out of an open-ended rectangular waveguide with a layered medium. This CST program calculates the reflection coefficient (simulating corrosion measurements), and describes the field distribution in multiple layered media. Steel sample with 12 months exposure time has been measured. The experimental results were obtained by using a microwave NDT scanning system that was built according to the results of the theoretical investigation, and they confirmed the theoretical results.","PeriodicalId":434318,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Far East NDT New Technology & Application Forum (FENDT)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126824878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The generator retaining rings are a highly stressed component and subject to particular attention, as they play a vital role in securing the generator rotor windings against centrifugal forces during operation. The typical condition assessment regime relies on the generator retaining rings being removed to enable inspection of the inside surfaces for damage. This process necessitates a significant human effort and is time consuming, resulting in major down time costs for the power plant operator. This paper describes an automated robotic scanner dedicated to ultrasonic and eddy current inspection of the retaining rings while they are mounted and the generator rotor remains in place within the generator stator. The scanner described here features a light weight frame and minimized dimensions, making it suitable for a wide range of generator configurations.","PeriodicalId":434318,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Far East NDT New Technology & Application Forum (FENDT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129631845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It consists in focusing at each point of a reconstruction area by applying coherent summations. The main issue of this method is the computation time which makes real-time imaging difficult for large images. In this paper, we propose to use a migration technique that accelerates the processing. With real data, we show that this method is much faster than the conventional technique and that the signal to noise ratio is significantly increased. The velocities of the ultrasonic waves propagating through Polymer bonded explosive (PBX) change depending on the applied stress (compression or tension). In this paper, PBX specimens at close range of densities and ultrasonic wave velocities under similar initial conditions are applied in the compressive loading tests. Ultrasonic longitudinal wave propagation direction is parallel and perpendicular to applied stress direction respectively. Longitudinal wave velocities are accurately and efficiently achieved by real-time Ultrasonic time differences (velocity) measurement unit. In the range of stress evaluated under compression between 0 and 15MPa, these relations between the relative variation of the longitudinal wave velocity and the applied stress vary linearly. The value of acoustoelastic constant (K) can be determined by the compression tests. These founds suggest the potential of applying the acoustoelastic effect to determine the compressive stress condition of PBX in a certain stress range.","PeriodicalId":434318,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Far East NDT New Technology & Application Forum (FENDT)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133768143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using this technique, one can measure the RS at the same points many times, studying for instance, the changes of RS under the action of service loading or effectiveness of stress-relieving techniques. The ultrasonic computerized complex (UCC) for non-destructive measurement of residual and applied stresses that was developed recently includes a measurement unit with transducers and basic supporting software. The developed system allows measuring the RS either averaged through thickness or in surface or subsurface layers and displaying the results in a form of a continuous curve on the screen of the instrument. The present version of UCC allows measuring the averaged through thickness biaxial RS in plates 2 - 150 mm thick and surface/subsurface RS at the predetermined depth. The results of ultrasonic RS measurement in large scale welded specimens and structures are also discussed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":434318,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Far East NDT New Technology & Application Forum (FENDT)","volume":"147 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123077963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First collected the DR digital image of large thickness difference workpiece, then calculated the edge width of image with ImageJ, and finally handled with edge corrosion area through the image fusion technology of PCNN. The information of fused image was more wealth than the original image so that could reduce the width of edge erosion, which could restore covered defects and achieve the aim of improving the detection rate of defects. This paper is based on the comparison between PCNN algorithm and another fusion algorithms, and assessed the quality of fused image with the width of edge erosion, sensitivity of thickness, resolution of IQI, information entropy(ENTROPHY), mutual information(MI), correlation coefficient(CL). The result of research shows that PCNN algorithm is superior to another algorithms in the aspect of information entropy, mutual information, which mainly embodies that PCNN image fusion algorithm can get more detailed information of the original image. Besides, PCNN algorithm can effectively reduce image's edge erosion, improves image resolution and image thickness sensitivity, which can restore more overwritten defects with the aim to improve the defect detection rate.","PeriodicalId":434318,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Far East NDT New Technology & Application Forum (FENDT)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128088190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the large number of transducers on the testing pig, a huge amount of sampling data has been produced which makes data storage and real-time processing impossible. For the purpose of reducing sampling data without loss of resolution, a compressive sampling method applied to the front end of sensor array is introduced. The paper firstly focuses on the sparsity of flaw ultrasonic echo in pipeline which is the precondition of the method. Then, compressive sampling technique based on multi-channel analog-to-information convertor (AIC) is designed to achieve low sampling rate data acquisition. The experimental results show that the flaw echoes can be accurately reconstructed with only 22% of sampling data compared with traditional sampling method. Furthermore, the flaw dual identification can be directly performed without signal reconstruction which greatly improves the time efficiency.","PeriodicalId":434318,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Far East NDT New Technology & Application Forum (FENDT)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127767430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two sets of delay time, i.e. the linear and curved array mode, were applied to the curved phased array probe respectively, and the corresponding characteristics of ultrasound field were analyzed. Numerical results show that under the condition of linear array mode, the ultrasound of side elements could not effectively focus to the axial ultrasound beam due to the phase mismatching between elements. These energy dissipations could be weakened with the decrease of aperture size or the increase of nominal focal depth. Besides, the actual focal position disagreed with the nominal focal depth, but kept approaching to the curvature center of probe due to the superposition of electronic focusing in linear array mode and the natural focusing induced by the circular-arrayed elements. Correspondingly, the evolution of ultrasound pressure on the radii surface with the nominal focal depth was also influenced which resembled those for experimental results. These would provide referential significance for the practical engineering applications of curved phased array probe.","PeriodicalId":434318,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Far East NDT New Technology & Application Forum (FENDT)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128958100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
