In the context of data warehousing, on one hand, typical use cases involve dealing with large volumes of historical data. On the other hand, operational data stores (ODS) facilitate easy and quick access to up-to-date information on operational data with smaller volumes of data in data warehousing. Here we discuss and provide a framework for designing a service-oriented ODS, with multiple advantages. We discuss the role SOA can play in ODSs without compromising performance. We provide a detailed architectural blueprint for a SOA based ODS, and walk through a detailed case study on service oriented ODS in the context of customer portfolio management.","PeriodicalId":433802,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Next Generation Web Services Practices (NWeSP'05)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127121870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For effective application of Web services, differentiated service quality must be guaranteed. However, majority of the current Web services do not differentiate quality of messages and the current Web servers do not reflect the quality factors of the service level agreement settled between the service provider and user. Our research analyzes the appropriate quality factor for the quality level where differentiated service is provided and suggests a method for assigning priorities to Web service message processing processes based on these quality factors. The suggested method assigns the priority dynamically in order to satisfy the service level agreement as much as possible.","PeriodicalId":433802,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Next Generation Web Services Practices (NWeSP'05)","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124973303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They support the integration at enterprise level in the global Internet era. However, the enterprise level applications are only part of the spectrum, the other being the ever growing ubiquitous embedded applications. Arguably, the SOA's offer the same advantages at embedded system level. In this article we are evaluating the service oriented paradigm in the context of distributed embedded systems and instantiate the observations on Openwings as a particular service oriented architecture.","PeriodicalId":433802,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Next Generation Web Services Practices (NWeSP'05)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123848915","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most successful types of these services are XML Web services and ebXML, which are emerging as significant e-Business application frameworks. However, both ebXML and Web services use different registries each other for the purpose of publishing and discovering services. And this discrepancy of registries has given rise to a demand for integrated query when adopting the frameworks. Furthermore, these registries support only keyword-based search, which does not make use of semantic information, and which does not address the problem of matching service capabilities and allowing service location based on the functionalities sought. In the literature of semantic Web, the problem of creating ontologies from legacy information has been also arisen. In this paper, we show how service descriptions, written in OWL-S, can be mapped into UDDI and ebXML registry entries, and can be migrated from registries. Therefore, it provides not only a way to support integrated queries for registry entries but also a way to build a foundation of semantic service discovery. Also, migrated OWL-S can be updated periodically while registry entries are being modified by using replication APIs of the registries.","PeriodicalId":433802,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Next Generation Web Services Practices (NWeSP'05)","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114845123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To pick one of such similar services that matches the user's requirements is a difficult task and necessitates the use of an intelligent decision making framework. This paper addresses precisely this component. We present the design of a dynamic Web service selection framework that makes use of a semantic matcher to support matching and composition of software services. The framework also uses a recommendation system which helps a user to select the best service that matches his requirements. This recommendation system results in evolution of the framework to dynamically adapt to users requirements.","PeriodicalId":433802,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Next Generation Web Services Practices (NWeSP'05)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123946768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adaptability is an important requirement in the context of Web services to cater for the need of diverse set of client applications requesting customized view of consumed Web services to fit their own contexts and preferences. This paper presents an ongoing project to devise a novel service composition framework, named AdaptiveBPEL that leverages aspect-oriented software development (AOSD) techniques to open up the service composition for dynamic change in order to provide a greater degree of configurability and dynamic adaptability of Web services. This framework can: 1) easily adapt to changes in business rules, and collaboration policies governing service interactions; 2) provide different levels of functional and QoS offerings. The adaptation process is policy-driven to declaratively define the adaptive service behavior through dynamic injection of functional and non-functional extensions into a core service composition to allow on-demand and per-instance service adaptability.","PeriodicalId":433802,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Next Generation Web Services Practices (NWeSP'05)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123090447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article, we propose a dynamic invocation mechanism for unanticipated Web services that offers support for conversational messaging, based on dynamic aspect oriented programming (AOP) techniques. Aspects are used to store the communication details and the conversational context of the Web service. In case of service failures, the conversation can be replayed on another semantically equivalent Web service, in a transparent way for the client. Code examples are given in the dynamic AOP language JAsCo, and a prototype, called Web services management layer, is discussed as a proof of concept.","PeriodicalId":433802,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Next Generation Web Services Practices (NWeSP'05)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134180771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
