Catholic school governance resides at the school level and achievement comparisons likely vary by city. Catholic school research from the 1980s and 1990s suggested a Catholic school advantage, but few studies have sought to update this literature due to a lack of comparable data. We use standardized assessment data from the early 2000s to provide a citywide, point-in-time comparison of student achievement in math and reading in Catholic and public elementary schools. Matching methods allow us to measure differences, comparing similar students in similar schools, and we find no consistent differences during this period.Keywords: academic achievementsector differencesCatholic schoolselementary schools DISCLOSURE STATEMENTNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the authorsAdditional informationNotes on contributorsJulie W. Thirteen studies were analyzed first using a database to identify how the data related to three guiding tenets from Critical Race Theory. Then, a constant comparative analysis was used to identify themes found related to each tenet. Findings showed that this body of research underscores the importance of the Black Church’s community, relationships and trust, challenges to academic disparities, informal learning, faith-based learning, provision of access to programming, and spirituality as a support mechanism for academic success.Keywords: Black Churchliteracyacademic achievementreligion","PeriodicalId":43359,"journal":{"name":"Religion & Education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136294021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this gap, this study explored the experiences of Black, middle school students attending a “modern-day segregation academy,” a contemporary private Christian school whose beginnings can be traced to the implementation of school desegregation legislation. Framed in BlackCrit theory, findings suggest the school reproduced a climate of antiblackness that permeated school culture, curriculum, peer interactions, and pedagogy. In response, Black students implemented various acts of subversive agency to maintain joy, humanity, and faith. This study reinforces the importance of racially affirming spaces, and necessitates the development of pedagogies, practices and policies that honor the spirit of Black students, in all school settings.Keywords: Brown v. The Resilience of Religion in American Higher Education presents a different narrative, emphasizing heightened attention to religion in the academy, the revitalization of religious colleges, and the diversification of student religious life. This article summarizes the argument of the 2018 book and provides an update in light of the events of the past five years, including the impact of COVID-19 and the persistence of systemic racism in American society.","PeriodicalId":43359,"journal":{"name":"Religion & Education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139364013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Broadly speaking, the secularization thesis posited that as science and modernity advanced, older religious beliefs would be discredited and fade away, at least among the educated. Schmaltzbauer and Mahoney show that such has not been a consistent pattern. And in fact many religious beliefs and practices, including some traditional ones, continue to flourish or have made “ an unexpected comeback ” (1) in and around even America ’ s most highly regarded academic and scientific centers.","PeriodicalId":43359,"journal":{"name":"Religion & Education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75843415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
