A related trend is the seamless integration of multiple radio technologies into a single heterogeneous wireless network. Both developments increase network management complexity and require new management concepts with a very high degree of automation such as Self-Organizing Network (SON) concepts, which are currently discussed in the network operator (NGMN), research, and standardization (3GPP) communities. SON functions have to be coordinated and supervised in an automated way in order to enable a stable system operation with tight control over the system behavior by the network operator together with a high degree of automation. Based on a detailed analysis of the requirements for the coordination, a policy-based approach to realize the coordination-related decision making based on the network configuration and SON function context is presented. Results for two use cases (fully automatic hardware to site mapping and coverage & capacity optimization) are presented to show the applicability of the developed approach to diverse SON use cases.","PeriodicalId":433520,"journal":{"name":"12th IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management (IM 2011) and Workshops","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126649365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The AgS is a P2P overlay-tier whose purpose is to aggregate the services and service components maintained by service providers in a P2P Service Overlay Network (SON). The performance evaluation takes into account two metrics: 1) the average path length, and 2) the response time. Both of them are used in the comparison of two environments: 1) AgS and 2) a P2P SON without AgS. Additionally, the searching performance in the environment with AgS is compared with a P2P SON that uses Gnutella as the searching mechanism. The simulation results clearly show an improvement in the performance of the search operations when the AgS is used to the detriment of the searches performed without it. The results also show AgS is better suited for use in small overlays.","PeriodicalId":433520,"journal":{"name":"12th IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management (IM 2011) and Workshops","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126723229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to determine quality, the IT industry seems to be converging towards a set of commonly used metrics, including but not limited to, equipment availability, the time to resolve incidents, etc. In order to improve the quality of their services, service providers need to adopt a consistent and continuous focus on their internal processes, the skills of their people, the organizational structure and so on. On the other hand, the IT service industry has been traditionally labor intensive. Even though a wide range of management tools is available to support even the most complex management tasks, the overall service management process still relies on the existence of humans to make important decisions, perform complex administration tasks and monitor the performance and effectiveness of the overall process. This paper studies the tradeoff between the cost of a service (as manifested by the staffing level) and the corresponding quality metrics (subject to the service level agreement). In particular, we study the cost of service quality through the use of an optimization model that takes into account the constraints and cost factors typically encountered in a service provider environment.","PeriodicalId":433520,"journal":{"name":"12th IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management (IM 2011) and Workshops","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125189685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These services have strict QoS demands in terms of packet loss, jitter and delay. In an effort to meet these demands, operators introduced centralized admission control mechanisms to avoid congestion when too many session were allowed. These centralized approaches often fail to effectively manage the available resources mainly because of the bursty nature of multimedia traffic. When transmitting variable bit rate videos resources are reserved based on the peak rate of the video. This leads to under-utilisation of the network. Measurement based admission control mechanism have been proposed such as the IETF Pre-Congestion Notification (PCN) to allow better network utilisation. Each node in the PCN domain measures the network load and admits or blocks accordingly sessions at the edges of the network. Previous research proposed bandwidth metering and an autonomic rate adaptation algorithm which led to a better utilisation of the network but still introduced unnecessary bandwidth headroom caused by the variable bit rate of videos. In this paper, we propose an additional buffering step before traffic enters the PCN domain and determine configuration guidelines for the parameters. The performance of this buffering step has been evaluated in an NS - 2 based simulator environment. The conducted tests show a 26.5% increase of network utilisation.","PeriodicalId":433520,"journal":{"name":"12th IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management (IM 2011) and Workshops","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130369479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Trustworthy and Controllable Network takes centralized control as one of the basic control mechanisms and requires to build reliable centralized intra-domain routing. In this paper, we solved the problem of building reliable centralized intra-domain routing by finding the routing configuration which maximizes the disjoint paths of each ingress to all egresses. The problem is transformed to finding K paths for each ingress to the egresses. It is proved to be NP- hard to find the optimal solution when K≥2 if ingresses do not cross each other and when K≥3 if the ingresses cross each other. To solve the problem efficiently, a heuristic algorithm based on network flow theory called HANE is proposed and evaluated on different types of topologies. The experimental results show that HANE can achieve good performance.","PeriodicalId":433520,"journal":{"name":"12th IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management (IM 2011) and Workshops","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130379830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
