Language Teaching in Vocational Higher Education Based on Industry Needs 基于行业需求的高职语言教学

Moreover, foreign human resources working in Indonesia will be incrasing. This will cause the competition of getting jobs in Indonesia for Indonesian higher education graduates becoming tighter and tighter, since they have to compete with the graduates form other countries who look for jobs in Indonesia. Therefore, the quality of the education in Indonesia should be improved. This includes Polytechnic as Vocational Tertiary Education in Indonesia which produce graduates who are ready to work in industry. Polytechnic should provide their students to have sufficient competencies to enable them to win the job competition in their own country. They should have adequate competencies in their own field (in accordance with their majoring) and supported with the ability to communicate in English as one of international language commonly used in industries in the globalization era. The aims of the reseach is to find out the competencies for communicating in English needed by industry. The result of the reseach is very important to design the syllabus and the teaching materials eduquate for Tertiary Higher Education in Indonesia, since it produces graduates who ready to work instantly after they graduate. This study is done through Need Analysis of English competencies used in industry. The objects of this study are industries located in Central Java Provinces and Yogjakarta which are as the users of Vocational Tertiary Higher Education, such as industrries in Manufactures, banking and Financial, IT , as well as Hotel and Tourism industries. The result of the reseach shows that the four language skills or competencies needed in today industries in Indonesia consists of twenty competencies, seventeen listening competencies, fourteen reading competencies and fourteen writing competencies. However, the competencies needed varies depend on the job fields as well. The result of this study is then used to revise the curriculum and the syllabus design in Semarang State Polytechnic. The purposes of the study were to analyze the translation techniques used in the movie and analyze in what cases the most prominent technique was used by the subtitlist.This qualitative research was done by analyzing the original Indonesian subtitle of the screenplay in the Indonesian subtitle using Molina and Albir’s classification of translation techniques (2002). Analysis was also made on what cases the subtitlist used the most prominent translation technique based on its language features.The result of the study found seven translation techniques used in theIndonesian subtitle of Spongebob the Movie I. The most prominent technique used was literal translation technique, followed by generalization, linguistic compression, compensation, linguistic amplification, borrowing, and modulation. However, most of them still did not develop the assessments that were appropriate to the 2013 curriculum. This study aimed to explain the existing writing assessments and the need for the students to stimulate their critical thinking and creativity. It was conducted at the tenth graders of MA Manbaul Quran. The method used in this research was research and development (R&D). To get the data, researcher used observation, questionnaire, and interview. The findings of the study showed that the English teacher did not understand the demand of 2013 curriculum that was to make students critical and creative. It meant that the teacher was not able to stimulate students critical thinking and creativity. The study also indicated that the English teacher did not develop discovery-based writing assessments. Further, the study showed that the teacher had to give pre-activities before she gave writing assessments for the students. The last, the study showed that the students got some difficulties to write English text. The difficulties of the students such as to translate English text, and to arrange, elaborate, and make a story. It meant that the students needed more activities that could help them ready to arrange, elaborate and make a story. Therefore, it was suggested for the teacher to adopt and develop discovery-based writing assessments to stimulate students’ critical thinking and creativity. There were 19 students as the subjects of the research. The test was constructed based on Davine’s five categories of critical thinking which are the students had to recognize the writer’s purpose (1 item), note special point of view (2 items), evaluate of the writer’s choice of language (1 item), evaluate the writer’s argument (1 item), and evaluate inferences (1 item). The result shows that in the implementation of teaching critical reading to the fifth semester students of English Department of Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya University, several steps were implemented including the preparation, presentation, and evaluation. It was done correctly except in pre activities, the lecturer did not tell the students the objective of the study. Meanhile, the result of the statistic calculation says that the average score the students achieved was 58,15 which are categorized into poor skill. In line with that, this study covers literary studies including understanding to literature and aesthetic introduced to students in secondary schools. This article describes overview and understanding about literary appreciation activity to educate character values to the students. Furthermore, students regular class during literary appreciation activities are observed. Results show that from three short stories (Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Great Expectation by Charles Dickens, and My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell) secondary students are interest to study social context they find everyday. The background of the three stories however is social life of middle class people, therefore it is easy to meet narration conformity to students real life. In addition, they also learn to identify characterization through characters and their behaviors in society. Reader students moreover identified and applied values to their own characters. Through this activity, students enable to learn and adopt characters value reflected in stories they appreciate. The activity also motivated and supported students cognitive development. Kandri tourism village has been appointed by the local Government as one of the hosts on “International Folklore Festival 2019”. The role of local culture explored in this village and the capability of tour guides becomes really important to increase the amount of tourists in the purpose of income generating. Therefore, this paper aims twofold. Firstly, it aims to explore kinds of the local culture embedded in English for tour guide during the training program in Kandri tourism village. This awareness leads to a phenomenon widely spread amongst them known as code switching. Code switching is described by Hymes as a common term for alternatively use of two or more languages, varieties of a language or even speech styles. The aims of this paper are to study the forms and the reasons for social media users, especially teenagers, in using code switching. This paper is an interpretive research. Firstly, researchers classified the collected data following Poplack’s (1980) classifications on the kinds of code-switching. The second problem about the reasons of code switching is answered by the theory of Appel and Muysken (2006). It, then, makes the translation quality of Google Translate very important. This study is a qualitative research which aims to describe the translation errors found in the translation process of Google Translate in translating health articles from English into Indonesian, and the quality of the translation product in target language. This study applies Keshavarz’s (1999) and Vilar et al.’s (2006) framework of errors analysis in translation. The data are two articles about the treatment using herbal products which are gained from Medical News Today website. The result of the analysis shows that the process of Google Translate translation still needs some improvements in translating words which are related to the culture and the language system of the TL, which gives impact to the quality of the translation product. With the globalization allowing movies from a country to be enjoyed in other countries, movie subtitles undergo development as well. Subtitles of many popular movies today are not only produced by certified companies but are also created by freelancers and made available on the virtual world. Subtitles available online are often more lenient in characteristics, including in the use of language. In relation to the phenomenon, some Indonesian subtitles of Hollywood movies contain English vocabulary. This research aims at describing the use of English vocabulary in the Indonesian subtitle of Superhero Movie available for download from Subscene.com and examining the impact of the use of foreign vocabulary on the viewers’ understanding. The linguistic data take form of English expressions in the subtitle of the movie. The data were described and their effect on the audience’s understanding is studied. To assess the audience’s understanding, the readability rating instrument rating put forward by Nababan, Nuraeni and Sumardiono (2012) is used. The assessment involved the movie’s target viewers as the informants. The presence of English vocabulary can give a distinctive nuance and on the contrary, present sense of peculiarity, affecting how the audience get the message of the expressions containing the foreign language items.
