It becomes more complex when all subscribers have to communicate using shared spectrum of Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and require flexible, higher bandwidth services. A key issue in delivering wireless services is the problem of congestion which has an adverse impact on the quality of service (QoS). To cope with QoS, there is a need of intelligent RNC (radio network controller) at BS (base station), which cooperates to adapt and retrieve information to manage the resources intelligently and reliably in a consistent manner. The proposed intelligent RNC react autonomously keeping in view the service level agreement (SLA), network environmental changes and collaboration with each other to share their knowledge. Distant index based retrieval and adaptation algorithms are proposed in this paper to handle unpredictable scenarios. These RNCs, as a result, accept, reject or buffer a connection request to manage resources to meet QoS requirement as defined in SLA. The evaluation shows that system congestion for high priority subscribers is significantly reduced at the cost of low priority subscribers in real time.","PeriodicalId":433243,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on High Capacity Optical Networks and Enabling Technologies","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126041852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By using a retarder plate and improved optical head, in additional to the nonlinearity compensation, the resolution of the displacement measurement is doubled and quadrupled compared to the conventional three- and two-mode laser interferometers, respectively. In the particular case, the nonlinearity of 18.4 nm is reduced to a value of 140 pm.","PeriodicalId":433243,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on High Capacity Optical Networks and Enabling Technologies","volume":"154 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113990009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The internet1 had very wide acceptance and has penetrated in all walks of life much beyond the expectations of the designers. The initial text only traffic has now grown into voice, video and text requiring differential services architectures. The evolving concept of bandwidth brokerage for connectivity on demand is rapidly gearing the internet applications. The internet2 is an initiative to provide network services to demanding applications in education and scientific research. It will also look ahead to applications in the next 50 years. Fiber optics will play a key role in development of an infrastructure of internet2. The DWDM technology has been widely accepted and greater utilization of the available bandwidth for un exploited range of frequencies is being considered. The initial applications tested for internet2 are for education and research community but it will soon become a global phenomena where communities will be formed to host applications of common interest. The concept will be extended to interaction between communities in the global perspective. In this paper the globally evolving scenario of involving social, commercial and intellectual communities has been discussed. A model Medical Decision Support Service (MDSS) for Pakistan has been proposed on the lines of PERN2 over internet2 for medical and health care services. A Service Architecture for Archiving and Presentation of data (SAAP) may be used to extend MDSS for global grid connectivity.","PeriodicalId":433243,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on High Capacity Optical Networks and Enabling Technologies","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134327542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study the fanout-distortion tradeoff of these techniques on both synthetic and real Internet topologies. The performance results vary not only between different methods but also between different topologies. Our study of the fanout-distortion tradeoff reveals that low distortion approximation methods sacrifice fanout for low distortion suggesting a more careful design in order to balance both mertics. Furthermore, MST outperforms low distortion approximation methods both in distortion and fanout, especially on realistic Internet topologies, even though it was not designed to optimize distortion or fanout.","PeriodicalId":433243,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on High Capacity Optical Networks and Enabling Technologies","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128112713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

OMINs are popular for its cost-effectiveness and self-routable characteristics to meet the demand for high speed switching capability. A great challenge in dealing with OMINs is the optical crosstalk caused by optical signal coupling when propagating through the switching elements comprising the architecture. Many algorithms have been developed to solve optical crosstalk using different approaches. The new fast zero with RLP (FastRLP) algorithm is developed based on the time domain approach for solving optical crosstalk in the optical omega network. Simulation results have shown that integrating RLP to FastZ algorithm successfully improved routing performance.","PeriodicalId":433243,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on High Capacity Optical Networks and Enabling Technologies","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132032975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Subscribers now demand much more capacity. Providing such high capacity is possible by integrating the high capacity of optical networks and flexibility of radio networks. Certain problems exist in the existing radio-over-fiber (RoF) architectures. These include complexity, cost of deployment, and constraint on transmission distance. This paper is focused to solve these problems. We have proposed RoF network architecture to provide wireless and wired access services. Our simulation results show that the extracted signals by this scheme exhibit high transmission performance, over 45 km SMF fiber. BER of 10^-13 was observed.","PeriodicalId":433243,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Symposium on High Capacity Optical Networks and Enabling Technologies","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126327317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
