The MediaWiki software platform allows for the easy exhibition of thousands of documents, and is a viable method for the publication of public history. The GHN was initially opened to IEEE members and received limited engagement from the public. Usability studies were conducted on the site, and it was found that users contribute wikis when they have above average knowledge in a specific subject, and when there are limited barriers to participation. In order to expand its potential contributor base and limit barriers to access, the IEEE partnered with six other engineering societies to expand the site's scope to all engineering, and to encourage members of the technically literate general public, including historians and hobbyists, to contribute.","PeriodicalId":432859,"journal":{"name":"2015 ICOHTEC/IEEE International History of High-Technologies and their Socio-Cultural Contexts Conference (HISTELCON)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124655699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The medium can record a large amount of data on winding tape and recorded data are reliable and stable. However, the performance of the other storage media, such as optical disc, magnetic disk, and integrated circuit memory, has progressed remarkably, so the advantage of tape storage has decreased. Video tape recorders (VTRs), which are typical systems for magnetic tape storages, are only used for limited purposes now. For these applications, data storage that records instrumentation and computer data on tape retains its advantages and its performance has been improved. We described the history of VTRs at the HISTELCON 2010 and showed that Japan made substantial contributions to their practical use and popularization. In this paper, we compare the vicissitude of magnetic tape data storage with video tape recording.","PeriodicalId":432859,"journal":{"name":"2015 ICOHTEC/IEEE International History of High-Technologies and their Socio-Cultural Contexts Conference (HISTELCON)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126576148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He was the son of a village priest. For some years he had been studying at the seminary in Perm and then went to the University of St. Petersburg. In his student days he worked as a mechanic at one of the first electric power plants in St. Petersburg which was producing electric lights for Nevsky prospect. After graduating from the University in 1882, A.S. Popov remained there as a post-graduate at the Physics Department. A year later he became a lecturer in Physics and Electrical Engineering in Kronstadt. By this time he had already won recognition among specialists as an authority in this field. In 1894 Aleksandr Popov, Russian radio pioneer built his first practical radio receiver, which contained improvements to the coherer tube.","PeriodicalId":432859,"journal":{"name":"2015 ICOHTEC/IEEE International History of High-Technologies and their Socio-Cultural Contexts Conference (HISTELCON)","volume":"203 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115897651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Huge infrastructural investments formed the city into the present tourist-luring townscape. In 1896 the country celebrated the thousand year anniversary of the statehood and the mayor's office wanted to raise the glare of the feast with an up-to-date technical solution. Up to that time horse carts, horse tramways electric tramways, etc. were used for transportation. The new elegant avenue rimmed with palaces connected the center and the city park where a millennia world fair was organized. For the establishment of the fast and posh connection an idea was formed to push the tram line underground. In 1894 a tender was created for the realization of the first continental underground electric tramline. The construction was realized in 21 months by the local entrepreneur Robert Wünsch, the bogie carriages were produced by Schlick Forgery and Machine Factory, and the electric devices were made by Siemens und Halske Co. The steel and concrete structure stations were tiled by artistic tiles of the Zsolnay factory. The Budapest metro line No. 1 has been in operation since its inauguration, its 120 year anniversary will be held in 2016. The Underground Railway Museum (URM) with tree original wagons has been open to the public in a non-used tunnel part since 1975. The Budapest metro line No.1. became part of the World heritage in 2002, together with the avenue above it called “Andrássy street”. The Budapest metro is a candidate for becoming an IEEE milestone.","PeriodicalId":432859,"journal":{"name":"2015 ICOHTEC/IEEE International History of High-Technologies and their Socio-Cultural Contexts Conference (HISTELCON)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114510460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Institute has already made honorable recognition of 52 technologies through March 2015. The honor of the \"One Step on Electro-Technology,\" of course, contributes to wider notification of the history of Japan's electric technology development and the societal background to the general public. It is also extremely important to create the goals of new science and technology from ideas of the past.
