Situating himself in the recent “transnational turn in the historiography of interethnic relations” in the American West, he draws particularly on Grace Peña Delgado’s work on ethnic Chinese residents along the Arizona-Sonora borderlands and Eiichirō Azuma’s work on Japanese Americans within the broader Japanese empire (5). Tokunaga joins these authors in stressing the importance of analyzing the American West in terms of multiracial, multiethnic, and transnational hierarchies and structures, although he challenges Azuma’s somewhat static picture of racial hierarchies in favor of a more dynamic and changeable set of social structures. By exploring systems of servitude and their termination in California and the wider Pacific World, this essay reframes the Age of Abolition. It describes the rise and fall of labor regimes that bound California Indians, African Americans, Chileans, and Chinese women. Citing Chinese-, English-, and Spanish-language sources from a variety of archives and libraries, this article expands the chronology, geography, and actors of the Age of Abolition. Finally, it suggests trajectories for rethinking this momentous transition from Pacific World and western U.S. vantage points to suggest the need for a global history of abolition.","PeriodicalId":43253,"journal":{"name":"CALIFORNIA HISTORY","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90665722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dilsaver and Timothy J. Babalis offer up the history of natural resource management in the Channel Islands as a lesson on restoration ecology and public land management. Dilsaver, professor emeritus of geography at the University of South Alabama, and Babalis, a historian and cultural resources program manager for the National Park Service (NPS), composed this book after developing a larger administrative history report on Channel Islands National Park for the NPS in 2021. The authors’ stated purpose for the book “is to educate students, scholars, and the public about the complexities and controversies that accompany efforts to protect natural resources and restore ecological integrity to both the land and the sea” (xv). They posit that Channel Islands National Park has had “extraordinary, in some cases groundbreaking,” experiences with acquiring and preserving land and sea in the ongoing attempt to achieve ecological integrity in those habitats (309). That slot takes in a lot of territory, like the Golden State itself. Harris runs with Davis in his Marxist approach and talent for closely detailing multiple narrative strands before combining them into comprehensive overviews. His chatty voice, like Starr’s, softens his sometimes dense explications of Palo Alto’s contributions to technological, business, political, and military developments over a century and a half. The fluid writing especially helps when he delves into the layered interfaces of these entwined histories. Biographical sketches of myriad Stanford associates and alumni anchor the narrative to personalities and provide dramatic conflict atop the historical forces Harris analyzes, which grind against one another at more tectonic depths. Throughout Palo Alto, Harris asks...
