The proposed probe, which resorts to a bifilar transmission line configuration, is flexible and adaptable to the surface of the containers to be monitored. This feature, along with the other advantageous characteristics of TDR, makes this probe configuration particularly attractive for industrial applications. In this paper, to test the applicability of the method, two different scenarios are considered: monitoring of liquids contained in metallic tanks and non-invasive monitoring of liquids in non-metallic tanks. Results show that, in both cases, the proposed system has considerable potential for being easily and effectively employed in practical, industrial applications.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131070001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve the temperature estimation using magnetic nanoparticles, a solution should be employed to solve the set of equations. And the solution to solve the set of equations is a key factor that affects the accuracy of temperature probing. To determine the dependence of the solution on the temperature probing accuracy, the matrix solution and least square solution were presented to solve the set of equations by simulation. The simulation results shows that, the matrix solution allows a maximum temperature probing error of 2 K with a standard deviation of 0.79 K, whereas the least square solution allows a maximum temperature error of 0.08 K with a standard deviation of 0.034 K. It indicates that the temperature probing accuracy was improved by a factor of 20 using the optimized solution of least square solution to solve the set of equations.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131082556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Historically, application of inertial sensing was limited to high-performance, high-cost aerospace and military fields. Recent MEMS technology has enabled miniaturization, mass production, and cost reduction of inertial sensors. This paper presents the development and robotic application of a miniature, low-cost AHRS unit based on MEMS technology. The sensor suite includes a tri-axis gyroscope, a tri-axis accelerometer and a tri-axis magnetometer. Fusion of the sensor measurements is achieved with a quaternion-based EKF algorithm. The performance of the AHRS unit is evaluated with a rotating platform and the results suggest numerous application possibilities. As an application case, the AHRS unit is employed for posture measurement of a robotic fish. By adjusting the lift forces produced by pectoral fins on both sides, the robotic fish can maintain desired posture during highspeed swimming.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131085505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The energy to be harvested comes from ambient vibrations as external energy sources. In particular, we consider two sources increasingly available in the ambient or in the human body and often both are mixed together: periodic induced waveforms and stochastic sources. The oscillator is composed of multiple magnetically-coupled bi-stable cantilevers with different natural frequencies inside each single well. The structure of the oscillator, modeling, simulations and measurement data will be here described. The principle has been validated and compared with other nonlinear techniques already proposed in literature. In particular the results show the possibility to efficiently recovery energy from mixed-sources having rich spectrum dictated by random vibrations and low frequency peaks consequence of periodic sources. The proposed device, based on piezoelectric output, is suitable to be used as converter in order to supply wireless sensor networks, autonomous nodes or it can be applied as power sustainer for communication of integrated devices and contactless measurement systems.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130166036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in practical application of this method, the imbalanced problem occurred in fault sample dataset has greatly influenced its effectiveness. To remedy this problem, this paper proposed an improved Support Vector Machines method based on biased empirical feature mapping. In the new method, biased discriminant analysis was applied in empirical feature space, to make all normal samples far away from center of fault samples, so that the overall fault diagnosis ability can be improved. Through theoretical analysis and empirical study on actual electronic circuit fault diagnosis problem, we show that our method augments the diagnosis accuracy rate effectively.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130944428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system allows to simultaneously characterize up to 8 sensors. Prototype sensors can be easily realized thanks to an ad hoc structure based on an alumina substrate equipped with electrodes, a heater and an accurate temperature sensor, on this structure the studied material can be deposited by screen printing, spin coating or dip coating. The system is designed to study the behavior of the sensors by accurately setting the operating conditions in terms of chemical environment composition, gas flow, humidity and temperature. The system is fully programmable and it individually controls the film temperatures or measures them with a resolution lower than 0.1 °C. Both chemical transients and thermal transients can be studied. These features make the system suitable for determining the principal performance indexes of a gas sensing device (e.g., sensitivity, stability, selectivity, response/recovery times, etc.) as functions of various combinations of measurement conditions (e.g., gas concentrations, temperature, humidity, flow). The proposed measurement system will find also useful applications in sensor model validation.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130989010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The chicken meat was stored in a refrigerator for 13 days at 4 oC. The changes in dielectric constant and loss factor reflected changes related to water binding, water loss and ionic activity. The dielectric constant decreased with frequency and storage duration with a slope change at about 4 GHz. The frequency dependence of the dielectric loss factor was dominated by the ionic conduction in the lower frequency range and dipolar relaxation of water above 4 GHz. The dielectric loss factor increased with storage duration for frequencies below 4 GHz and remained almost constant above that. For purpose of comparison, the effect of water loss by mechanical extraction on dielectric properties of chicken meat was investigated. The frequency dependence was found to be similar to that observed for the aging with both the dielectric constant and dielectric loss factor decreasing with the water loss at all frequencies. This will be developed further to better understand the dynamic of aging and its effect on the quality of chicken meat.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131694882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
