The system is composed of a transmitter performing Zero Forcing (ZF) precoding and single antenna receivers applying decoding techniques. Simulation-based results show that except when the number of users is less than the number of transmit antennas, the BER performance and capacity of FBMC and OFDM modulation are the same. These results are theoretically justified due to the distribution of the interfering terms. As in OFDM, depending on the number of interferers, for a given BER performance target, the required number of feedback bits per channel vector can be rather high. FBMC becomes attractive not only because it relaxes the synchronization with respect to OFDM, but also because it achieves the same performance results as OFDM for multiuser MIMO precoding even in the case of imperfect CSI at the transmitter.","PeriodicalId":431852,"journal":{"name":"2014 11th International Symposium on Wireless Communications Systems (ISWCS)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121454713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, experimental measurements in real scenarios are carried out by employing WiMAX signals including the standard-compliant pilot signals. Highly time-varying conditions are induced by enlarging the symbol period by time interpolation in the digital domain. In addition, the performance of Inter-Carrier Interference cancellation techniques, which take advantage of the WiMAX pilot structure, are tested to evaluate their behaviour under highly time-varying conditions.","PeriodicalId":431852,"journal":{"name":"2014 11th International Symposium on Wireless Communications Systems (ISWCS)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115402635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although simple and effective in low crowded scenarios with low-medium traffic load, this strategy performs inefficiently when the number of mobile users is high and their distribution among APs is unbalanced, i.e. when network congestion becomes an issue. Load Balancing (LB) solutions aim at solving this problem by enforcing the connection of stations to the AP having either the smallest number of associated stations or the lowest traffic load. However, LB solutions do not account for traffic priorities or, when they consider them, they do not deal with the joint configuration of QoS (Quality of Service) and LB parameters. In this study we present a framework for modeling, analyzing and designing QoS-aware LB solutions. The proposed framework assumes that stations implement the Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) mechanism of the IEEE 802.11e standard. Moreover, in order to make the framework concrete, we assume that the QoS goal is the weighted fair allocation of wireless resources. However, the framework is not restricted to this goal and can be easily extended in order to deal with a different cost function. The proposed framework is validated through simulations in a typical indoor LB scenario. The results show that the model is effective in capturing network performance and in designing LB solutions that account for traffic priorities and the configuration of QoS parameters.","PeriodicalId":431852,"journal":{"name":"2014 11th International Symposium on Wireless Communications Systems (ISWCS)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130741612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When compact uniform linear arrays are considered, the distance between adjacent antennas becomes a critical parameter due to its close relation to both spatial correlation and antenna mutual coupling, which are the major effects introduced by compact antenna arrays. In this paper, we formulate the optimization of energy efficiency with respect to both the antenna spacing and the number of antennas, and perform extensive numerical experiments to evaluate the gain that can be achieved by applying the optimization results. Moreover, we demonstrate the effects of various system parameters on the optimal antenna spacing, including mean angle of arrival, angle spread, average channel gain, and antenna loss factor, and propose also a simple approximation method to greatly reduce the complexity in finding the optimal spacing.","PeriodicalId":431852,"journal":{"name":"2014 11th International Symposium on Wireless Communications Systems (ISWCS)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131284239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The possibility to allow direct links between UEs plays an important role when the commercial LTE infrastructure is subject to failures or becomes unavailable after a disaster. Project ABSOLUTE, in scenarios for public safety, proposes raising in the sky a balloon with attached a 4G eNB (AeNB) to restore temporarily connectivity. In all cases in which UEs are out-of-coverage of the AeNB like in indoors, D2D becomes crucial. In this work, we propose to establish direct links employing a communication protocol that relies on the transmission of beacon frames sent in broadcast mode by selected UEs. We delve security aspects of this D2D protocol suitable for Public Safety (PS) users with out-of-coverage UEs based on sharing encryption keys. We pursue a network connectivity analysis of the secure protocol whereby we are able to show the existence of tradeoff points between connectivity and the increased overhead added by security for different values of the system parameters.","PeriodicalId":431852,"journal":{"name":"2014 11th International Symposium on Wireless Communications Systems (ISWCS)","volume":"193 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114988814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the block cyclic property of the channel matrix, we propose the cyclic repetition method (CRM) to generate many times of equivalent symbols for each OFDM symbol. With these equivalent symbols, the subspace channel estimation can perform very well within a few OFDM symbols. In order to enable automation of this configuration, we previously described the concept of a SON Objective Manager (SOM) which determines the best configuration based on conditional, ranked objectives and SON Function models describing the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) optimised by some configuration. However, the simplicity of the models and the complexity of the design-time inference may limit the applicability of the initial concept. In this paper, we present an extended and enhanced run-time SOM with more expressive input models, namely, context-dependent, weighted operator objectives allowing a better trade-off and SON Function models defining the possible values of KPIs for some configuration. More specifically, we investigate the problem of downlink sum rate maximization. The NP-hard formulation is first decomposed into two subproblems in order to decrease the computational complexity of the sum rate optimization problem. We propose a heuristic subcarrier allocation scheme followed by a centralized power allocation algorithm that iteratively solves the convex formulation obtained from a conservative approximation. Simulation analyses are provided to further validate the efficiency of our proposed algorithm and highlight the advantages, in terms of both convergence speed and spectral efficiency, of using FBMC over OFDM.","PeriodicalId":431852,"journal":{"name":"2014 11th International Symposium on Wireless Communications Systems (ISWCS)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123637322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
