In the Reformed Christian tradition, such foundational questions are understood to inform all academic inquiry, making all teaching and research neither religiously neutral nor radically relative. Within this context, I consider with my students the question ‘what foundational questions does the religious impulse at the heart of humankind ask?’ through a renewed reading of Genesis 1–3.","PeriodicalId":43172,"journal":{"name":"Literature and Theology","volume":"2009 32","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138518484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this essay, I offer a brief consideration of disciplinary integration within higher education, with particular attention to the work of John Henry Newman, S.T. Coleridge, and Daniel Hardy. Next, I offer a case study that presents an ecofeminist reading of S.T. Coleridge’s ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ with an assist from the religious scholarship of Sallie McFague. Finally, I conclude with some brief recommendations on how faculty might teach religion and literature in the classroom and, in the process, contribute to the current effort within higher education to diversify the curriculum.","PeriodicalId":43172,"journal":{"name":"Literature and Theology","volume":"2009 17","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138518468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article explores the intricate connections between legal, mythic, and divine violence in Benjamin’s essay, in light of some of his other theological, literary, and political works from the same period. It suggests that the idea of a ‘divine law-annihilating violence’ should be read in light of Benjamin’s claim that a ‘critique of violence is the philosophy of its history’. This implies amongst other things a critique of the dogma of the sanctity of mere life underlying both the Greek and the Christian tradition.","PeriodicalId":43172,"journal":{"name":"Literature and Theology","volume":"70 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90142120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In conversation with Islam’s early history, narrative traditions, and debates over the status of revelation and reason, both authors, we argue, envision religious truth as an irreducible experience that no single doctrine can lay exclusivist claims to. We demonstrate that intuition, reason, and revelation coexist as different paths toward spiritual insights in their fictional works. In different yet comparable ways, they create a fresh ontological ground for negotiating questions of divine truth and move the searching subject centre stage. Focused on deeds and actions, their reform projects promote an ethical conduct of life and acceptance among different religious groups that could not contrast more profoundly with the political reality in most Islamic countries today.","PeriodicalId":43172,"journal":{"name":"Literature and Theology","volume":"88 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82562357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
