We did a case study of the OpenPhone system in the context of caregivers for HIV/AIDS infected children in Botswana. The aim was to design an IVR system for delivering care-giving health information in Setswana using a normal telephone. The study compares DTMF and speech-enabled IVR systems. The targeted users are predominantly females, ranging from semi-literate to illiterate adults but who are nevertheless numerically literate. We found that obscured socio-cultural circumstances of the users instigated their choice of DTMF over the speech-enabled IVR modality and this in turn led to elevated levels of both acceptance and rapid learnability towards the users' technology of choice.","PeriodicalId":431661,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on User Science and Engineering (i-USEr)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122222298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we propose a framework for content translation on public display systems. This system allows users to request for an application using their mobile device, and subsequently be loaded on to a display with the option to personalise the content in a language of their choice. Users are able to use a number of interaction methods on our campus public display system that includes mobile phones, touch screens and biometric identification. Allowing users to customize the language of the content has shown an improvement to the perception and usefulness of public display systems.","PeriodicalId":431661,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on User Science and Engineering (i-USEr)","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117330670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, the researcher wanted to see the differences or similarities between these media in reporting baby stories. The researcher followed Labov and Waletzky 's theory (LW) to understand narrative. This theory breaks narratives down into five distinctive building blocks: Orientation, Complication, Evaluation, Resolution and CODA. However in this paper we presented the result of Orientation only. It is the first and the main part of narrative. At the end of this paper, we identified the similarities and differences in narrative characteristics in Orientation (Who, Where, When and Why) displayed by text-based, picture-based and video-based CMC and their role in supporting young mothers' reporting everyday experiences with geographically separated families.","PeriodicalId":431661,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on User Science and Engineering (i-USEr)","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116136652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From a dominant writing in Malay world, the usage of Jawi is confined mostly in Islamic religious context nowadays. As an initiative to encourage the learning of Jawi, this research proposed a Jawi Editor running on the XO-laptop which considered as a new technology used in education, this technology introduced by One Laptop per Child (OLPC) organization. OLPC concerned of giving a laptop for every child in the developing countries to encourage them in education. XO-laptop allows collaboration and cooperation between teacher and students and between students themselves by working in groups. In this new technology of education the XO-laptop plays a main role of transferring the teacher and students roles in the class from the traditional way to the computerize technology. The aim of this research is to develop and contribute a Jawi Editor in the XO-laptop simulated environment to help the Jawi teachers and students in classes, to compile several development guidelines of Jawi-like systems in the XO-laptop simulated environment and to conduct a case study of teacher-student interaction using the Jawi Editor in the XO-laptop simulated environment.","PeriodicalId":431661,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on User Science and Engineering (i-USEr)","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124895949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper attempts to illustrate the effectiveness of the “Phone Card Insert-Eject” pictogram in representing its intended function as an example to the overall study. Subsequently, a new set of pictograms were proposed and evaluated for its comprehension and effectiveness. The pictograms highlighted in this paper are currently found on public telephony installed around the country. A survey was carried out to establish the use of pictorial symbols and icons in relation to the functions of the public telephony. As pictograms are utilised to graphically indicate and represent the functions on machines and equipment, this study was conducted to determine the level of user comprehension and recognition. This paper concludes with the discussion of the test results and recommendations for improving the pictogram designs to enhance the usability and interfaces of Malaysian public telephony.","PeriodicalId":431661,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on User Science and Engineering (i-USEr)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131274886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Students who learn abacus are found to be superior in the accuracy of their memory and the number of digits they are able to memorize when compared to non-abacus learners of the same age. Apart from the Chinese medium schools, the teaching and learning of abacus is not part of the teaching syllabus in the public and private schools in Malaysia. Therefore, this research provides a step in the right direction by designing an Interactive Abacus Learning Application for beginners. This application is based on child centered approach with the use of interactive and multimedia elements. The use of cognitive and psychomotor skills was also applied in its learning process. Apart from that, a drag-and-drop technique was applied for student interactivity.","PeriodicalId":431661,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on User Science and Engineering (i-USEr)","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124175679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to investigate the ergonomics awareness among university students. The data collected from the survey includes their prior knowledge about ergonomics, their current practice and their perception regarding ergonomic-related issues when using computer, as well as on ergonomic health risk. Questionnaires were distributed to 60 students. Result shows that there is a significant association between attending HCI course and having knowledge in ergonomics. Although these students know and understand the good principle of ergonomics, the results reveal that only half of them practice it. In terms of ergonomic awareness, the respondents are least concern on ergonomic risk of keyboard and mouse. The findings provide the current state of practice in computer usage environment. This finding indicates the need to educate students with ergonomic awareness.","PeriodicalId":431661,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on User Science and Engineering (i-USEr)","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126784816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A prototype of reading application with flexible user interface was developed for the purpose of the study. Four types of fonts, namely Times New Roman, Courier New, Arial and Comic Sans MS at various font sizes were tested. As for the font and background colours, black, white, red and attractive colours such as blue, green, yellow and pink were examined. The results of the study indicated that partially sighted children have their own preferences for font type, font size and foreground and background colour when reading texts from computer screens due to their differences in visual problem and visual acuity. The flexible user interface, indeed, had enabled the children to access and read the contents of the application easily. This study suggests the importance of considering these children in the user interface design.","PeriodicalId":431661,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on User Science and Engineering (i-USEr)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126231920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An exploratory study was conducted to investigate the decision making process when storing new items and in particular their dumping behavior, which we define as putting in some unclassified/partially classified storage. It was found that users ‘dump’ when unsure where to store, do not have the time to decide where to store, or not want to lose sight of data - these all have an impact on future retrieval. Understanding this behavior suggests design opportunities to support users, raising awareness of previously encountered but dumped information.","PeriodicalId":431661,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on User Science and Engineering (i-USEr)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123913394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on our five interrelated studies, we revealed how a remote asynchronous photo sharing application has been appropriated by an expatriate community to support their local social interaction. In particular, while photologs appear to have been designed to facilitate remote sharing of photographs with friends and family far away, in fact we found that a substantial area of use is to support more local interactions. Some design recommendations are proposed based on this knowledge.","PeriodicalId":431661,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on User Science and Engineering (i-USEr)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120905540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
