Henceforward, specific measures for alleviating challenges associated with sustainable construction become crucial-general arguments of good industry practice. Construction-sector sustainability is increasingly important in developing countries, and threats of globalization amid construction-tender price volatility require immediate action. The purpose of this paper is threefold. The first is to investigate, through a literature review, the indicators of globalization concerning the construction sector. The second intention is to evaluate the empirical impacts of globalization on the construction sector with a focus on the derivation of construction tender-price. Thirdly, the study intends to separate the contributions of foreign direct investment (FDI) to global integration for construction sustainability. The study adopts qualitative and quantitative approaches that follow a case study and causal research design to explore and understand decisions and opportunities regarding construction-tender price inflation. The study utilizes content, thematic, and statistical methods for data analysis. The study finds that construction tender prices increased by an average of 49.7% per annum for periodic maintenance of feeder roads between 2012 and 2021, with varying correlations to globalization indicators. The research highlights notable disadvantages of foreign direct investments in the construction sector through the emergence of foreign firms in developing countries. The drawbacks include instigating unfair competition, initiating adverse knockout effects on local firms, exterminating local firms, and perpetuating corruption. In addition, the study identifies areas requiring attention to address the impacts of globalization in the construction sector. Critical areas include legislating procurement controls that protect local firms and improving the qualifications and competencies of local firms. The study further underscores mitigation measures against the adverse effects of foreign firms in the construction sector. These measures include providing training to local firms, managing the nature and type of competition, managing the nature and type of competing firms, and building the capacity of local firms.","PeriodicalId":431573,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Developing and Emerging Economies","volume":"414 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127899257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Advocacy has gone through phases with limited success in the achievement of the cardinal objective of global inclusive education for humanity’s survival and socio-economic development. The present (2015-2030) phase is anchored on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and targets African and other countries facing special developmental challenges. It has been observed that environmental literacy is at the heart of the SDGs. The purpose of this paper is to review the objectives and achievement levels of the various phases of the global EFA Advocacy and expound the desirability of incorporating Environmental Literacy Education (ELE) into the ongoing EFA Agenda, especially in developing countries. After a research-based exposé of the developmental benefits of integrating the competences offered by ELE with those provided by UNESCO in its Guidelines for achieving the SDGs, the paper concludes that incorporating ELE into the ongoing global EFA Agenda is highly desirable and goes on to suggest modalities for the incorporation.","PeriodicalId":431573,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Developing and Emerging Economies","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126985459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methodologically, the study used a static CGE model to run simulations that indicate the nature of the static effects. In the simulations, the study identifies four different scenarios to investigate the impacts of the changes in the import tariff rates. Scenario 1 & 2 focus on tariff rates reductions, whiles scenarios 3 & 4 test the effects of the increase in import tariff rates on household welfare and compared to the base case scenario 2019 in which the benchmark equilibrium parameters are calibrated. The results show that household income and consumption volume have inverse relationships with import tariff changes. The findings obtained from the model suggest that import tariff increase will provide rise in general price level. But household welfare should be a priority of government complementary policy help, therefore social protection policy should put in place for any upward rise of tariff rate.","PeriodicalId":431573,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Developing and Emerging Economies","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127427250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite efforts to stimulate savings through the adoption and implementation of financial liberalization policies, the rate of savings in the country has remained low in absolute and comparative terms. Previous studies on the determinants of savings in the country focused mainly on the association between savings and financial liberalization [(Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Broad Money Supply (BMS) and Deposit interest Rate (DPR)], paying scant attention to institutions [(Rule of Law (RUL), Control of Corruption (COC), Political Stability and absence of violence/terrorism (POS), Regulatory Quality (RGQ), Voice and Accountability (VAC) and Government Effectiveness (GEF)]. This study therefore examined the effect of financial liberalization and institutions on Gross Domestic Savings (GDS) in Nigeria. The study adopted ex-post facto design. Annual data from 1996 to 2020 on Nigeria was sourced from World Development Indicators (WDI, 2020) and World Governance Indicators (WDI, 2020). Data was analyzed using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimation technique. The study adopted the 5% level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that GDP, DPR and BMS had positive and insignificant effect on GDS in Nigeria. The findings also showed that institutions was correlated with GDS in Nigeria. The study concluded that the effect of financial liberalization on savings in Nigeria improved when it was moderated with institutions. The study recommended that the country should strengthen its institutions by controlling corruption and ensuring political stability and regulatory quality to boost its savings.","PeriodicalId":431573,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Developing and Emerging Economies","volume":"510 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115343615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is germane given the implications on various macroeconomic outcomes. In doing this, the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) method was deployed base on the preliminary findings to test the relationship for Nigeria. Findings revealed that money supply and exchange rate exhibit significant effect on prices and output, while monetary policy rate does not. Also, technological innovation and labour force significantly impacted output while gross fixed capital formation did not, Base on the findings, it is recommended that the central bank implement policies that will ease access to forex, stabilize the exchange rate and lessen the hassles for capital goods import, while regulating money supply and monetary policy rate to stabilize the economy.","PeriodicalId":431573,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Developing and Emerging Economies","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133185405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pro-market viewpoint argues that large government expenditure is a source of economic instability and has negative effect on economic growth. The anti-market view, on the other hand, stresses positive effect of government spending on economic growth. Stimulated by unresolved debates on the precise relationship between government spending and economic growth, and continuous growth in government spending, this study employed modified and extended aggregate production model to examine the effects of government expenditure at its’ aggregate level on economic growth in Nigeria for the period (1981-2018) using bound test (ARDL) approach. The co-integration result indicates the existence of long-run relationship between total government expenditure (LTGE) and economic growth in Nigeria. ARDL results show that total government expenditure (LTGE) impacted positively on economic growth in Nigeria in line with Keynesian theory. The granger causality test result indicates the existence of uni-directional causal relationship from LGDP to LTGE for the observed period, in line with Wagner’s theory. It is recommended that there should be proper utilization of public fund in the provision of security and critical infrastructure especially electricity supply and road infrastructure which are precursors to effective economic performance. Public fund should be properly managed to ensure accountability, transparency and fiscal responsibility in carrying out public assignment. It is believed that if corruption is tackled in the country, more public fund will be freed for development and public expenditure would impact more on the economic performance, hence, the fight against corruption in the country should be frontally confronted. Public institutions charged with the responsibility of handling corruption matters in the country should be overhauled and strengthen to ensure timely and proper handling of corruption matters.","PeriodicalId":431573,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Developing and Emerging Economies","volume":"170 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124733095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Besides envisaging dire socio-economic implications in the event of a total national grid overhaul without alternative back-ups, this paper proffers the harnessing of the nation's abundant solar energy sources as a leapfrogging strategy. In its analysis and discussion of the reviewed case studies, this paper posits that solar energy has the capacity to boost Nigeria's electricity power generation and supply towards reducing current high levels of energy poverty. In backing its hypothesis, this paper conducts a case study review of two countries - United States of America and China - that have efficiently exploited their solar energy resources through deliberately conceptualised, designed and implemented policies, and in so doing facilitating a diversified, reliable and sustainable power generation and supply process. The paper concludes with recommendations put together based on inferences drawn from the case study reviews, as well as imputations made from an overarching analysis and discussion of these enabling policies.","PeriodicalId":431573,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Developing and Emerging Economies","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133365455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, positive international law altered the hitherto proto natural law-based equal and cordial relations between the Ancient Niger Delta Trading States and the Western European nations, from the 15th Century AD, when the Portuguese explorers and merchants were dominant in the Niger Delta region, before the arrival of Great Britain and France in the region about the 18th Century AD. Positive international law, enhanced by British gunboat diplomacy associated with it, promoted Western imperialism and thereby enabled Great Britain to achieve her imperialist ambition of transforming the erstwhile naturally sovereign Ancient Niger Delta Trading States and their mainland and hinterland ethnic nationality areas into the 1885 British Protectorate of the Niger Districts. Based on British imperialist protectionism over the Niger Districts and the rest of pre-colonial Nigeria, the entire ethnic nationality areas of pre-colonial Nigeria became a single British colonial possession called the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria, otherwise called modern Nigeria, in 1914. The British colonial government eventually granted political independence to modern Nigeria in October 1960. From the background of the aforementioned 1884/85 negative sovereignty treaties and continuing agitation of separatist groups in post-colonial Nigeria for improvement of their lots, the study makes a case for good governance, boosted by ethos of natural law and the social contract of governance, towards the advancement of civilization in the country.","PeriodicalId":431573,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Developing and Emerging Economies","volume":"1997 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116682874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
