Regarding this book in the series, George states that it has a focus on “race, ethnicity, and community history” as it explores “the disparate sociocultural contexts and geopolitical locations of contemporary Asian migrants” (1). By this, George here means not only how Asian migrants have been categorized and treated in their new locations but also how their own racial and ethnic identities persist within the diaspora over time. Through its various contributors, the book does an excellent job of illustrating the “symphony of eclectic voices that accentuates the diversity found within Asian Christianity and demonstrates how Asian diaspora communities create surprising new varieties and new momentum for the diffusion of Christianity in the twenty-first century” (2). The various chapters include such diverse diaspora communities and topics as the impact of colonialism on Indian dispersion (ch. 2), Korean Christians in Latin America (ch. 4), Hmong Christianity and Bhutanese Nepali refugees in North America (chs. 7 and 8), diaspora Christians in the Gulf region (ch. 10), and Muslims in Europe (ch. 11). As can be seen from this sample, the case studies cover a wide array of peoples, places, times (i.e., both long-standing and recent migrations), and issues related to Christianity and the Asian diaspora. My one criticism is that, like much of the literature in diaspora missiology, most of the authors do not draw on the rich social-scientific literature on migration and settlement patterns in the host societies. In general, their conversation partners tend to be other missiologists, theologians, and Christian scholars. This one criticism aside, George has produced a book that serves very well the global church in general and missiologists in particular as it illustrates how God continues to use migration as a way to fulfill his mission of reaching all peoples throughout the world with the good news. The volume contains excellent case studies of how the Asian diaspora is participating in that mission.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"446 - 447"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47645679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The book contains thirteen selected papers presented at the 2020 EMS conference. According to the editors, the papers were chosen for compilation because each specifically “demonstrated a way in which missionaries are updating their paradigms and models of mission” (ix). They are divided into three parts, although somewhat unevenly. The five articles in part 1 each highlight specific figures in the history of Protestant missions and five others in part 2 each propose a reexamination of certain mission theories influential among evangelical missiologists and missionaries. The book’s final section contains only two articles, each of which draws on demographic data to provide global analysis and projections on mission practices in the future. The editors do a good job with the first section because each article highlights the history of missions in different regions, including East Asia (China and Korea), South Asia (India), transnational East Africa, and the Caribbean. The most exciting thing about the articles is that they pay close attention to women and local initiatives in mission. Four of the five articles emphasize the role of women in missions and the impact of Christian missions on women. Indeed, one of them, written by Linda Saunders, provokingly argues that mission scholarship should consider Rebekka Protten, a former enslaved black woman from the Caribbean, as “the mother of the Protestant missionary movement” (35). Using various approaches, three articles in part 2 challenge the narrow concept of the unreached people group in mission, while the other two respectively propose the use of hybridity and social apologetics to enrich mission discourse and practice. Placed together, they show that the mission theories of the past generation need to be reconceptualized and expanded in order to address effectively the missional challenges of the present and into the future. All of them assess commonly held evangelical theories and concepts of mission as too narrow and they fail to consider the true breadth of mission in both the Bible and the mission field. Although the articles in Advancing Models of Mission are limited in scope, I agree with the editors that the book could serve “as an excellent resource for courses on missions” (x). For both scholars and students, the book shows the richness of evangelical mission history, the need for constructive criticism toward recent mission concepts, and the urge to answer future challenges with new ideas and practices.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"447 - 448"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43136264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a consequence of their unwavering commitment to their prophetic mission, RMP often encountered various forms of harassments and threats from state forces and those in power. With President Rodrigo Duterte’s ascent into power, attacks against progressive groups and individuals, activists, human rights defenders, and church-based NGOs significantly increased. This article aims to shed light on the nature of RMP’s missionary activity in the midst of intensified state repression.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"343 - 355"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44876414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tracing the historical precedent for the church as a healing agent in the world, and challenging narrow views of what healing means, a biblical healing metanarrative emerges as the primary telos of God, and reconciliation as an essential part of healing. By reconciling salvation and healing, spirit and matter, as well as healing and suffering, the ongoing work of the reconciling Healer is highlighted along with the implication that healing is an indispensable part of collective global mission.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"405 - 415"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47215291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Regular readers will have noticed that we have tried to build on this journal’s signature emphasis on the mission of the churches while embracing academic developments in World Christianity and Intercultural Theology.1 Though not intended as a comprehensive list or chronology of such developments, I have in mind, of course, the more or less familiar fields of mission studies, missiology, ecumenics, world or global Christianity, mission theology, comparative theology, missional theology, lived or grounded theology, and intercultural theology. Of course, a comprehensive history, taxonomy, and appraisal of the relative strengths and weaknesses of these developments would require a massive research effort and several volumes, so be advised that the humble suggestion I offer here is based mostly on observations and reflections over nearly forty years as a cross-cultural theological educator and academic administrator in Japan and North America. While this broad assortment of research approaches and agendas has been promoted almost exclusively by scholars in divinity schools, departments of theology, and seminaries, their relation to the traditional 19th century European and North American theological encyclopedia of biblical, historical, systematic, and practical fields has never been easy or obvious. With ideological perspectives running the gamut from normative and instrumental (to strengthen the practice and theory of Christian mission) to phenomenological and critical (to interrogate the practice and theory of Christian mission), the academic dialogue partners for these approaches have included extra-theological resources in social science, history, religious studies, and history of religions as well as intra-theological resources in biblical, historical, systematic, and practical fields. In summary, without denying serious differences and disagreements 1171605 IBM0010.1177/23969393231171605International Bulletin of Mission Research editorial2023","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"305 - 308"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44966487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Richard Niebuhr for the field of mission studies has not yet been fully explored. Yet, as Edward Poitras put it, his “theological perspective throughout most of his career contained an implicit missionary dynamic.” This article argues that Niebuhr’s lifelong reflections on God’s sovereignty, the paradoxical and dialectical relationship between the church and the world, and the concept of conversion as a continuing, ever-renewed process have profound implications for missiological thinking today. It looks into, inter alia, Niebuhr’s influence on the International Missionary Conference at Willingen in 1952 and examines his essay “An Attempt at a Theological Analysis of Missionary Motivation,” one of his few writings of direct relevance to missional practice.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"380 - 393"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47833905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the selections and treatments of the “threads” (or elements) of Christian tradition, however, I have a couple of questions. The selection of the six threads seems to reflect the ecclesial tradition of the author and his church tradition. All six are natural in the Catholic and Orthodox churches, but some of the “threads” are also points of contention for some Protestants. Other elements may be considered factors for the newer churches to split from traditional churches. The place of liturgy, sacrament, and arts among some Protestants, for instance, is much less significant than that of Orthodox and Catholics. While the selections themselves are good and acceptable, a clear qualifying explanation would have been helpful. Secondly, the book largely gives equal treatment to each element of the tradition in the different periods. While this is understandable to some extent, the significance of some elements of the tradition in some periods over others makes such equal treatment questionable. For instance, the making of Christian Europe between ca. 600 and 1000, theological developments in the period between 1000 and 1453 through scholastic scholars such as Anselm, Abelard, and Aquinas, and the role of scripture in the Protestant Reformation deserve greater treatment than given in the book. These few drawbacks, however, do not diminish the achievement of this book. The book may best serve ecclesial academia as an introductory conduit into the rich layers of Christian tradition.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"589 - 591"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49227396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
