{"title":"An Asian Integral Ecological Theology: Pope Francis’s Teaching in Dialogue with Asian Religions","authors":"P. It begins by placing Pope Francis’s teaching in the environmental context of Asia. It then compares it with the statements on ecology by the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences, especially regarding what Francis terms “the globalization of the technocratic paradigm” and the “excessive anthropocentrism.” The article then relates these two critiques to the Buddhist concept of interdependent origination, especially as presented by the Vietnamese Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh, and the Daoist concepts of de, dao, wuwei, and ziran. It ends by showing where Pope Francis’s ecological theology could be expanded by addressing the population issue, the theology of the “Cosmic Christ,” and an evolution-based theology of creation. The substance of this article was presented during the twenty-second Louis Luzbetak Lecture on Mission and Culture at Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, on October 18, 2021 (watch the video at https://learn.ctu.edu/2021-luzbetak-lecture). The author is grateful to its organizers for the opportunity to discuss Laudato Si’.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"314 - 329"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41439233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To steer the Philippine Catholic Church towards synodality, I argue that imitating the first Christians is imperative for Filipino Catholics. The early Church was a synodal Church, and if Philippine Catholicism aspires to be such, I further argue that two essential building blocks are necessary so it can tread the path of synodality, namely, political charity and collective spirituality. These two are equally crucial elements for Philippine Catholicism to realize its synodal transformation.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"330 - 342"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41661234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New developments focus mainly on restorative justice that seeks to rehabilitate, reintegrate, and restore offenders to their communities. This system has allowed space for chaplaincy and spiritual work in South African incarceration centers. This article uses the missional reading of John 8:1–11 and the narrative of David Heritage to demonstrate that faith, not religion, can change ex-offenders’ lives into narratives of rebirth and transformation. Ex-offenders are given a second opportunity to serve the missio Dei as agents of missional conversion and transformation.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"394 - 404"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43278688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first Vicar Apostolic of Western Oceania, instructed his missionaries to present their church as “the ancient Church, the mother Church, the foundation Church, the true and only Church, which exists everywhere on earth.” The diocesan archives in Auckland New Zealand preserve a single copy of a poster which communicated those ideas. This article identifies the source of that visual aid which was widely used in the first thirty years of the Catholic Mission to Western Oceania.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"370 - 379"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48200034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While briefly addressing the models themselves, the primary focus of this article is to update the original spectrum utilized by Bevans. Specifically, it seeks to clarify the primary axis to indicate the level of contextualization to a given local context. Second, it adds an additional axis, dividing the models based on relationship to the status quo of the given cultural assumptions, whether of the host culture or established church tradition.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"430 - 440"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41348367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For Kärkkäinen, the trinitarian economy of salvation constitutes the ontological ground of a church’s communal life in the wider society. The theologian advances a communal ecclesiology that celebrates irreducible particularities in unity of the Church while upholding a public ecclesiology through creative mutual interaction with other sectors of society in the imitatio Trinitatis. I discuss how his ecclesiological proposals may contribute to Korean-American churches by enhancing their socio-economic accountability, intercultural mutual respect, and intergenerational unity, while remaining deeply rooted in the Gospel of Christ.","PeriodicalId":43117,"journal":{"name":"International Bulletin of Mission Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"416 - 429"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49033917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
